Not satisfied with fighting the culture war in politics, Tufton Street has turned its eye on national institutions like The National Trust. Restore Trust, a dark money backed reactionary organisation is trying to take over the National Trust - while pretending to be a grass roots campaign.

@@johnmurray5573 Myself and every volunteer I've worked with across multiple sites and properties. Something the public don't realise is the vast, vast majority of historical research for The National Trust is done by the volunteers. They're not a 'woke army', they're ordinary people who understand and respect that the historical method is bunk if we pick and choose what we include in it to match our own sensibilities. Sometimes history is unpleasant and messy, but that makes it all the more interesting, informative, and compelling.

What is more perplexing is that the BBC give them a free run on all the political / current affairs shows, not even describing them as right wing. If the culture secretary was looking for evidence of BBC bias, it is right there.

It's not just the BBC.. ITV, C4, C5, Sky news have them on pretty much every news show and GBeebies (and C5, when Jeremy Vine, Storm Huntley or Alex Conran fancy a morning off) have them hosting shows.
Not once do they ever disclose the think-tanks they work for.
I am so grateful that Carol has taken up the role of publicly holding these shady institutions to account.
And just watch all the so-called free speech advocates spreading hate about Carol and wanting her cancelled. Their hypocrisy knows no bounds.
Any organisation having to call themselves, Restore trust, instantly begs the question. Why was the trust broken?.
Was it because a few members of the aristocracy wanted the taxpayer to pay for the upkeep of their family homes/land, while they lived somewhere else and let the plebs walk around the 'public areas'?
It`s the same in the US with Project Veritas. They are the exact opposite from "veritas," & it comes straight from the authoritarian & fascist propaganda playbook, where they say one thing & do the opposite. Accuse others of doing exactly what they are doing & use names for groups with words & terms like, truth, the peoples (group etc.), & other sham names.
Right leaning people seem to always be seeking praise for fixing a problem they caused while failing to actually fix it anyway. As often as not they make it worse and blame it on anything in their eye line. If a Tory was in a desert and stubbed his toe he'd take out his binoculars and find a distant camel to hold to account. When the Tories are in the right-wing fanatics all come out.
It was only broken in the eyes of a handful of regressive ignoramuses who felt they could make political capital out of a non-issue. Thankfully they're getting the response they richly deserve.
First class Carole. Since I found out about this 'organisation' a couple of year's ago I and my partner have been very careful to check which candidates are Restore Trust stooges and make sure that our votes do not go to them.

These lobbyists should not be allowed onto TV unless their sources of funding are declared and announced to viewers.

The law must be changed so that these think tanks have to show exactly who is funding them. Also the BBC needs to stop giving them air time as if their opinions are equivalent to elected officials or industry experts.

Many of the think tanks refuse to divulge who runs , contributes and supports them , Not so long ago a council began operating a four day workweek for some of their services , apparently it was showing great improvements , Mr Michael Gove MP became involved and ordered the council to go back to a five day working week for all the services , it was later revealed that the ‘ Taxpayers Alliance “ had instructed Mr Gove to do this ? Mr Gove was and still is a prominent figure in the ‘ Taxpayers Alliance “ the Roundtree Foundation are one of the few think tanks that provide fully funded and accountable records , Mr Tice’s new outfit is a registered charity , think tank and is registered with companies house as a place of business , nowhere is it listed as a political party ,
Taxpayers alliance have done nothing to reduce taxes on the poor but funnily enough they try to do loads for the very rich to save taxes.
They’re a ‘front’ for right wing headbangers and Koch/Mercer funded twonks.

It’s great that Restore Trust are being called out and exposed. What I really don’t get is why such a benign organisation like the National Trust is being targeted in this way. NT isn’t a political organisation after all. Any thoughts on why this is happening?
It was hijacked five years ago by the left,...so it is now very woke and PC....busy abolishing our magnificent culture and heritage.
In 1907 Hunter drafted the first National Trust Act, which was passed by Parliament and gave the Trust the power to declare its land inalienable, meaning that it could not be sold WITHOUT PARLIAMENTARY APPROVAL. 😉😉
Developers want the land I would imagine. Like most of these so called think tanks like the ‘taxpayers alliance’ that seems to be for rich people not having to pay more tax and so on.
All funded by big oil, arms and tobacco corporations. Nothing good comes out of these organisations and should be scrutinised minutely.

When I look at the anti woke mob, it can be disheartening. But then I'm reminded that these people are basically just today's reactionaries. They are reinforcers of unjust hierarchies and cheerleaders for the status quo. And that shall be their undoing.
In the past these types of people would've opposed the abolitionists, the chartists, the suffragettes, the civil rights movement etc. Every social justice movement throughout history faced opposition from people like them. Ultimately they always lose, and will continue to lose.

Every year now I make sure my husband and I vote in the AGM of the Trust. I vote the way the board asks members to vote to keep these right wingers out of the Trust. It's an assault on something that looks after our shared beauty. It's quite scary to contemplate what they are trying to do.

We are NT members and for the last three years, ever since Restore Trust appeared on the horizon, we've made sure to vote when the AGM comes around - we also actively seek out information about Restore Trust candidates for board membership and any of their AGM motions, in order to specifically vote against them.
My wife and I visited Dyrham Park a few days ago - happy to note that the "colonial" source of money helping to fund the 17th century development of the property by William Blathwayt was highlighted to provide appropriate historical context?

Tufton street, all I needed to hear. history was written by the winners as they say. Time history was just plain honest. You learn more from other mistakes than fake glories. Excellent and important content. Give these people half a chance and they'll "save" our national heritage by selling it off cheap to their donors who will then sell it on to 'developers' who will wreck and build then take the money and run, leaving us to try to salvage what we can from what's left.

Sometime ago I had a couple, husband and wife in my store, we were discussing days out, the lady commented ; "We were in the National Trust, but he decided we had to leave, I miss the days out". At this point the good lady laughed and the husband looked sheepish.
