As I’ve stated before, one doesn’t actually realize how humongous bison are unless you’ve been next to them!
We noticed when they are extremely upset they will foam at the mouth as well.
This event went extremely well. Your family had your back!✌🏻

Dusty I feel that you need to paint over that orange or whatever to a dark brown. Then get a large barrel and paint it that orange with rocks inside. Putting it in the middle of the field away from the fence to play. He likes the orange or whatever to play with. Just an idea. Enjoyed seeing the bison. Might be untouchable but sure are huggable. Take care and see you in the next video. So sweet of you to thank everyone public able.

Wow! That must have been one hell of a phone message to get!! I watched both videos of them getting out a long with all your other videos and I have to say that one major reason things went as smoothly as they did is because of all of the time you spend with them. Without that relationship no one else would have had any luck getting them pinned up and waiting for you. Honestly just a job well done all around to a very tough situation. It could have went very wrong but you have good people in your life that have your back. It’s neat to watch. It worked like y’all had planned it that way lol.

You should look into getting a Ex-Large Jolly ball made for horses!! Also get a big plastic blue barrel and hang it on a tree, or get a tee post and pound it into the ground and chain the barrel to it kind of like a teather ball, but it goes around in a circle on the ground so he can push it around. You can also fill it half way with sand to make it a challenge for him to push around and show off to his girls. They also make cattle brushes that you can putt into your pastures for them to rub and itch on. Awesome video, I came over from Arms family homestead.

  • @lisagauvin
    @lisagauvin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

This brought me back to being a teenager and getting a call that our horses were out. You would worry about them getting hit by a car, and the driver or others get hurt. Would they find their way to the interstate - or almost worse - would they run through the posh golf course? You could have a tree fall on the fence, you could have an animal break through. You clearly take it seriously and ypu will fix what you didn’t need fixed. You can’t plan for everything. All you can control is how you react. The credit is raising animals that you interact with - that trust people. You did well. Don’t apologize.

Dusty, U R truly a Blessed Man... U have a wife that Adores U, & Family members that Love U & not only that but they love the Bison. That is what families R for, coming together & helping one another when that help is needed. I know that Birds & Bison R nothing alike, however @ 1 time we had Love Birds, we had just gotten married & moved into a new apartment the drapes & the carpet were RED... I know YUCK I hate the color RED anyway R birds started ripping out all their feathers so when we took them to the Vet, he explained that MOST ALL animals also hate the color RED & that they can have some really bad behavior problems if they get around RED. So it may be that DUNBAR feels like these birds did, by the time we got them into the Vet, they were pretty much featherless from pulling their feathers out.
So Maybe Dunbar gets very angry @ the Red gates. U might just for grins paint one of them Blue or Green just to see what he does & how he acts, U've got nothing to lose but some $$ on some paint. It's worth a try.
As far as a toy for him, U might not need one if its the color Red that upsets him, but U could always have somebody rig up some large metal squares that R intertwined W/Each other, kind of like a large Jungle Gym that is very large & tall, that he can't pick up or move but that he can vent himself all day long if he wants 2.
These R all just thoughts that I've had when thinking about U & Ur family & the Bisons.... I've always wanted to get up close to one, so I admire U & Ur family for being able to do so.... Thank U for taking the time to share it ALL,........ GOOD OR BAD W/ALL of us...

Dusty your boy DunBar Needs a buffalo bucket. Take a metal bucket fill it up with nuts and bolts and ball bearings stuff that's going to make noise inside when it rattles. Hanging Tree on a chain where he can bang with his head. It's going to make all kinds of noises and make him happy and he'll leave your gate alone. Remember to weld the lid and chain on. Hours of free fun.

Wonder if you could put a Removable Center Post in the middle where those 2 fences come together? You use a tube larger than the Center Post. Make it deep enough that Dunbar can't pull the Post out. You can put hangers on the removable post to hook to. It's just a thought. Might be want to. Try painting the Gates a different Color like Black if you think it's a Color thing lol. Good Luck I'll be watching for sure. A friend from WV. Peace Be With You All

😜😜😜. That was a crazy way to awaken thinking Dan was messing with you. He did an awesome video and had a great time joking at your expense while showing how much you REALLY have worked with them. Especially the great Houdini ......your pal Dunbar. I still wonder about the colors red and orange cuz what you’ve shared about the things that drives him wild seem to be those colors. Are all your gates that color? Good thing you have only one bull cuz while on a trail ride in MT we sat on a ridge watching the wild Bison below when two HUGE bulls were head to head for hours. So fascinating cuz it was when they finally was saving the numbers. We were quite aways but could feel the earth and hear them loudly and snorting and creating dust devils. It was something to remember and we’ve never seen again. I been around herds of Black Angus and even trained babies to the halter to show at Fairs. Those bulls when older and together on pasture could never be trusted. That rancher coached Football at local college and when training equipment was replaced he’d take the sleds and anything else and put in with the bulls. Wonder if any high schools or colleges have some to share for Dunbar to work his frustrations on. Paint them red or orange. And wonder what other owners have for a solid security gate. Once a taste of freedom he’s bound to take the ladies on another stroll. He’s very smart and HUGE and he DOES know you. Always something on the ranch or farm AND now a lot of worry when you go away again. Friends and family and great neighbors are like Gold. Maybe a big thank you barbecue is in order too. Watch out Dunbar you may be the menu one day if ya keep doing your tricks and scare anyone on the road taking just a country drive while you on your stroll with entire herd. Bison aren’t everywhere so he’d be a shock coming up on them unprepared. This was a great follow up to the story that happened last week. Got to love them and the GREAT Dunbar and wait for the next wild rodeo 🤣😂😆🤣😂😆👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Hi Dusty.... I have an idea for some toys for the bison. Weld together some scrap pieces of that tubular gating, and scrap pipes into a ball shape. Like a cat toy ball with a bell inside... Since Dunbar (and I think a lot of animals) like to play with things that make noise, you could put an empty bucket inside ball to make noise. (hey! New product idea/name! THE BISON BALL! lol) See em on your website. If you make one and they like it make a couple more for them. That would be a fun video to watch them playing with their bright colored balls in the fields! Another idea, even simpler would be to get an old barrel with lid and fill with tin cans & bits of metal and rocks and they could push it around making happy noises! Take care! Nancy

Thanks for your narrative of the great bison escape! Boy, your dog looks little next to bison! Very gutsy dog to tease that bison! Few questiions.....what's the orange paddle you used in corral for ? Is there a reason it's bright orange? Do bison react to certain colors more than others colors like red or orange or green?
Did you sell the calves that were born last year ?

The paddle is a management tool used to direct pigs, sheep, goats, cattle and....bison. It really just makes the human image seem to occupy more space as well narrowing escape routes. Many of the paddle are shakers as well-noise makers.

Paint your gates green since Dunbar likes orange. I think the 55-gallon drum with rocks in it and painted orange is a great idea.

I saw the one video where you attached the 55 gallon drum to the tree for him but I was thinking maybe get a few more and just fill them with some rocks or something and set them in the pasture for him to knock around. Maybe if he had a few more choices he might forget about the feed trough and the gates. Maybe take an old feed trough frame and attach some buckets with some gravel in them, something to make a nice racket for him. Dunbar seems like he gets bored and just needs an outlet. I just found your channel and have really enjoyed it by the way. Seems like a nice way of life to me.

I knew about the first escape from Daniel's channel, but I didn't know about the second escape until now. I found your channel through Daniel. I know feeders cost a good bit of money, but since Dunbar has already roughed up the one feeder maybe let him keep it as his toy. I say that because he didn't show much interest with the barrel hanging from the tree (unless he has changed and I don't know about it) and I know you bought a new heavy weight one piece feeder already. I think the reason he likes that feeder is it's low to the ground and plenty of places to hook his horns. That's a natural fighting position of a bull bison - head low to the ground, push with his head then hook and toss with his horns - the feeder provides the challenge he is looking for, plus he always wins which makes him a very happy bull. I don't think you will ever find a toy he likes more. It may save gaits and fencing by letting him keep his toy - he picked the toy for a specific reason - to practice fighting. I've watched videos in Yellowstone with bull bison fighting and I noticed it was the same fighting behavior that Dunbar uses when he fights the feeder. Dunbar is doing exactly what has been built into his DNA for all of history. He didn't have another bull to fight at the time so he made a pretend bull to practice on. Letting Dunbar keep his toy may prevent a bull fight now that you have Big Joe.

So glad you got them home safe and sound. You might want to consider painting gates and feeding equipment other colors maybe not so close to red? Just a thought. Our Holstein bull really didn’t like red so we didn’t wear much if any while working with our dairy cows.
