Can a Gas Mask/Respirator protect you from Smoke?

  • I frequently get asked, can a gas mask or respirator protect the wearer from smoke, from both wild fires and house fires. The answer is a little complicated.
    Respirators with particulate filters can block smoke and respirators with chemical vapour filters can block hazardous fumes from fires, a combination filter can protect the wearer from both but no gas mask with filters can give the wearer oxygen or decent protection from carbon monoxide.
    A supplied air respirator or rebreather would be needed in an area with high concentrations of carbon monoxide or low oxygen due to a fire, however for the most part, outside in open air, a regular respirator with filters would offer far better protection, especially if the wearer is evacuating the area than no mask at all.

      My roomie made an oopsie with the oven’s self-cleaning mode. We spend an hour and a half controlling the smoke.
      After ten minutes I ran to get my gas mask because the smoke was burning my eyes and lungs.
      They all thought I was a nutter for having a gas mask. Today… they learned that when you need it and don’t have it, you really want it.
      They have all purchased orders for their own masks now.

    I've tested this by standing directly downwind from a bonfire with various masks (M40, 4A1, GP5) and it actually worked pretty dang well, even with the M40's filter being expired. We were burning aluminum, diesel, plastic, you name it.
    The other guys at the party were a little freaked out though.

      Yeah the interesting thing is filters don't just expire outright, often they reduce the amount of stuff going through which makes them useless for military gas use but still useful for reduction from various things.

    I bought a 'Fire Mask'. Comes in a red box with a set of heat resistant gloves. It's a hood you pull over your head with an elastic around the neck, then you cinch up the filter and you have up to one hour to breath in toxic environments. Silver on the outside to reflect some heat. There are also Fireballs. You throw them at a fire and they break and release chemical to put out a small fire. Just found a stash of P100 valve respirator masks on Amazon Canada that everybody missed at regular prices, oh joy, I need a life!

    • @Weaponsandstuff93
      @Weaponsandstuff93  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Only issue with the fire hoods is they normally use a chemical reaction rather than a filter to work.

    • @James-ke5sx
      @James-ke5sx 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only issue with a full face gas mask plus filters plus gloves is how do you carry this in your EDC if you work in an office. You need a whole backpack. This kit is for emergency evacuation not long term. Plus this covers the whole head with heat reflection to help keep your brain from cooking. Imagine storing gas masks for office buildings compared to square boxes, easy to handle out. And then there is the cost. $35 vs ($250 for a full face, $40 for filters, $20 for gloves) for an office of 50-100+. Then the most important of all. I have a beard. And wear glasses. Big problem with you mask for me and half the world

    • @VVayVVard
      @VVayVVard ปีที่แล้ว

      It's an A1 filter, so it could just be expired. An A2 filter like the 3M 6055 would be longer-lived, so you could try switching to one of those.
      Although like the person above said, it sounds more like it isn't fitting properly. E.g. if you have a bad shave or the silicone surface is dirty. Alternatively the ports might be defective.

    So, in a nutshell, no gas mask can protect you from the fumes that linger after cigarette smoke has visually dissipated? I have allergic asthma and am looking for a way to protect myself from cigarette smoke in public.

    • @Weaponsandstuff93
      @Weaponsandstuff93  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The majority of the fumes would be stopped by an ABEKP3 filter, some may get through though, you'd technically need a self contained breathing apparatus to be safe from all types of smoke.

    • @VVayVVard
      @VVayVVard ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had the same issue in the past, and in my case, wearing a simple A2P3 filter combined with a half mask (3M 7500 series mask + 6055 filter + 5935 filter with an adapter) was enough to completely eliminate cigarette smoke odor and all undesirable physiological effects. Note however that it will not eliminate all unhealthy gases, such as carbon monoxide, nor polonium. A full face mask combined with an A2B2E2K2 CO P3 filter would be better, and an SCBA with a hazmat suit would protect from everything. Based on your phrasing, though, I imagine any mask with a A2P3 filter would likely suffice.

  • @AshleyBlackwater
    @AshleyBlackwater 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Isn't it also worth noting that fires use up the oxygen in the room? So in a burning building it doesn't matter if you can filter the air when there is none. This is why firefighters have their own oxygen supplies in addition to the reasons you gave in the video
    Unless i'm mistaken?

    • @Weaponsandstuff93
      @Weaponsandstuff93  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      In a wide open space that's not a problem, in confined spaces it could be an issue but I imagine burning or choking to death would always happen first.

    • @JohnSmith-se5vo
      @JohnSmith-se5vo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It just be the toxicity of the air that would be fatal, not the lack of it. Fire requires 3 elements to keep going, Oxygen, heat and fuel. Remove any one of these and you have no fire. So technically if you have no oxygen (or air) in a room you have no fire.

    • @VVayVVard
      @VVayVVard ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I checked some research articles and it seems that residential fires rarely involve significantly lowered oxygen concentrations. And the biggest risk in residential fires is carbon monoxide intoxication, so filtering out CO does buy you some time. That said, fires do release high concentrations of CO2, and there's no practical way to filter it out, which is why SCBAs are always going to be the best option if you need to linger around.

    • @VVayVVard
      @VVayVVard ปีที่แล้ว

      Late comment, but with an ABEK P3 CO or A2B2E2K2 P3 CO filter you can filter pretty much everything and reduce CO significantly. Some Dräger filters have these properties. VK-450 filters are another good option.
      Most full-face models will get the job done. Ones with 40 mm filter ports (sometimes labeled RD 40, DIN 40, or EN148-1) are compatible with a wider range of filters.
      Also, silicone, while very resistant to degradation, is more permeable to gases than other rubbers (~50x more compared to halobutyls and EPDM, and many times more than latex) which means that if you stay in a smoke-ridden area for longer than 30~80 minutes (depending on the thickness of the silicone at its thinnest points as well as the permeability of the compound) minute levels of gaseous compounds may begin to seep through the rubber, and the mask will continue to outgas them for some time. This effect is especially notable for small compounds and compounds that are highly soluble in silicone. On that note, the simplest way to remove unwanted gases rapidly from silicone, and other rubbers as well, is by 'baking' them out using an oven at a temperature slightly below the boiling point of water, using only the lower heating element, placing aluminum foil below to protect the mask from radiant heat.

    • @VVayVVard
      @VVayVVard ปีที่แล้ว

      As for specific models with 40 mm ports, I personally like the Scott Vision series masks, which have wide panoramic visors with good optics. The C50 is also a great option if you can find one.
