And I thought it was going to be a tough day! | Lure Fishing for Pollack and Cod

  • It's that time of year when lure fishing for pollack and cod is really tough going, with a lack of fish whilst they head offshore before returning in mid April. But the weather forecast was too nice to pass up this opportunity to go lure fishing for pollack.
    I tried fishing with weedless soft plastics but all the fish wanted were metals.

    Hi Nathe,
    Stunning! Yet again; stunning!
    I love the way your enthusiasm and reasoning come over - love it! Watched that before my first class and it had me smiling and super positive with them - they asked if I had ‘smashed three coffees?’
    How amazing to spot the mustelid - I’ve noticed their spraint down near the Loch when out walking the dog’s but not seen evidence of them around the rocks. Would’ve been a real showstopper to catch the otter on camera.
    Thank you for another brilliant, beautiful and breath taking video. You’re a talented lad! Lovely fish too especially that chunky pollock - makes me hope for one if that size next time I’m down there.
    Respect and admiration; learning so much from you about species and their behaviour, current , flow, tactics and all the rest - thank you again. Tight lines, mate.
    Ps:
    You make that step over look like nothing when it gives me the dry boak! can I ask for tips on shoes and do you use metal studs, at all? I use approach shoes but need new ones.

    • @SlippyLimpets
      @SlippyLimpets  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Gaz,
      I've seen them at Petticko Wick so makes sense that they're along the loch side. Always love seeing them but they hate the camera! Maybe next time I'll get lucky🤞
      Footwear wise I tend to use approach or trail running shoes, but neither have grip on the wet rock down there, so I've invested in some Supa Tracks studs and they're the real deal. Not quite as good on dry Rock as an approach shoe but definitely come into their own when it's damp or there's some seaweed or lichen on the rock. Hope this helps mate.

    Eyup Nathan. It's always great to hear you saying what you are doing and why you think it makes sense. If the eternal conundrum of how to catch fish every time that we would like to were to be solved I think we would lose some interest in the game. That four pounder made me think of salt, breadcrumbs and chilli dipping sauce. Damn, I must be hungry. I'll sithi after, Dave.

    • @SlippyLimpets
      @SlippyLimpets  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right about that, I usually go out with a plan but probably don't convey it enough, but I would definitely get bored if I didn't and still always caught fish. That thought process helps keep me casting.
      Hope you had a good feed, Dave, and tight lines. 👍🎣

    • @gosnest
      @gosnest 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The braid arrived yesterday so I spooled it up and went bass fishing with soft plastics at my local mark, it is super fine stuff almost like cotton but rated from 12lb up to 25lb.
      Caught three good bass, I don't know if the braid is less visible but it was non stop plucking or hook ups for an hour.

    • @SlippyLimpets
      @SlippyLimpets  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's great, it is really soft but casts well because of it, i think it's to do the with the lack of coating. Bass wise, more likely to be right place, right time than the braid. I've got a question for you, my Mrs is really keen to spot a Goshawk, we know they're at Kielder but wondered if you have any tips?

    • @gosnest
      @gosnest 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SlippyLimpets goshawks are very secretive, just like a big sparrowhawk really, the best way to see a goshawk close up is to have a day out with a falconer flying one.
      Do you know Spencer Burgo from whitley Bay? He is a falconer and also a Kayak Fisherman who might be able to help you out.

    Another canny trip up there mate, a little fish fest in what I class as “Slippy’s back yard”
    Something funny to watch is in 33rd minute just after you catch a small pollock, when your return to fishing it just looks like you’re in a studio casting at a big screen because of the sunlight, really Wired!!

      Depends what species you're targetting, but cod and pollack like them near the sea bed so fish them as close to the bottom and pretty slowly too. It took me a wee while to get into them but once cracked, they can be productive

    Hi Nathan.. Great vid mate.. Just shows that u just never know how yer days gonny turn out.. Just wondering if you ever use longer rods from the rocks?.. I always use 10 or 11 foot rods on the rocks coz it just gives me the extra bit of length to try and work the fish over the kelp or ledge.. Defo works for me.. Anyway keep them coming.. And tight lines.. Cheers Graham... 🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣

    • @SlippyLimpets
      @SlippyLimpets  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alright mate, I've gone up to 9ft and agree the longer rods help out with controlling fish but they're a bit limiting on some of the marks I fish since the cliff is quite close to my back and they get in the way. My mate fished with a 10ft on Orkney and was quite restricted in where he could fish, saying that he did bully fish when I struggled🤔 Tight lines mate

    • @SlippyLimpets
      @SlippyLimpets  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Graham, I could talk for ages about outdoor kit and clothing, but the best thing to wear are some soft shell pants that are windproof ( I use the Outdoor Research Cirque pants) and ideally some merino wool long John's underneath, but any other base layer pants will work.That way the bulk is kept down, you stay warm, mostly dry, and you can ditch the long john's when the weather warms up. Hope this helps and glad you like the vids👍🎣

Was going out for seatrout-premiere this weekend, a friend hooked a small one but i got nothing but fresh air and sunshine, still worth it 😊 swedish westcoast season really kicks off now with cod and seatrout... btw, have you tried line through lures? • @SlippyLimpets
      @SlippyLimpets  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've have tried a few, and they are great. Had a few bass on the line thru sand eels. The main reason why I don't use them more is I like using lureclips and using the line through means I have have cut the line everytime I want to change lure. Hope you get amongst the fish next time out!

    Hey mate, I've been blanking for 4 sessions now, starting to question my sanity! I fished Filey Brig low tide on the morning of the 16th April, then Scarborough high tide on afternoon of the 16th - fishing off the bottom with lug/squid. Not a nibble all day... what the hell? Been a few times since then to Blyth pier and Marsden beach, fishing off the bottom with squid/lug again and nothing. Any clues as to what I might be doing wrong?

    • @SlippyLimpets
      @SlippyLimpets  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shore fishing in April in the north is really tough mate, and blanks are part of the game. Are you fishing for cod? If so, it's kind of the wrong time of year since they tend to move offshore. You could try changing your baits up a bit, rag worm tends to work better than lug in spring and summer. Just keep trying mate, you'll get there

    • @thomascook8541

      @@SlippyLimpets Cheers for replying! I'd love a cod, but not fishing specifically for it, I'm expecting/hoping for flatfish and/or coalies. I'll try the rag tip and perhaps I can try lure fishing for coalies whilst I've got the other rod(s) out on the bottom given it seems to be working for you in this video - although granted, you look like you're on some pretty sketchy rock marks there which presumably gets your lures "out there" in some deep and cold water compared to say, Blyth pier which is my most frequented spot. I tried to keeo up the fishing during the winter in the hopes of landing a cod, but it's bloody bitter standing on a pier when it's raining sideways and about 0 degrees c...

    • @SlippyLimpets
      @SlippyLimpets  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ho Ron, I find sizes changes depending on the species. From the shore, I tend to use around a 3 to 4 inch lure works well, but for bass this would be the minimum length. There's also the different depths that these fish feed at, cod and pollack tend to be down on the sea bed, but bass are higher up the water column. Hope this helps
