LRF Mackerel | Lure Fishing for Pollack | Dolphins | LRF UK

  • The lure fishing season up here is still going on and being mid October the weather is still mild and for whatever reason, after not catching any during the summer, the mackerel seem to be around in numbers and were hitting every lure I used! I landed my first one ever on LRF gear, which was great fun.
    Lure fishing for pollack has been slow this year but the ever faithful lure hooked enticed one on first cast.
    A couple of dolphins swam by which I managed to film with my drone...I love being out on the rocks!
    Hope you enjoy!

    I thought last year was bad for mackerel, this year was even worse, never came in till begining of June, but most were huge, when they were there, then have been on and off, all season, same as the rest of the fish count. Plenty of Seals, Dolphins and Whales, so the feed must of been there. Lads from down south, have said its been terrible for mackerel, there, as well. Love the videos, and looks like, the kinky lures are the way forward ha ha ha, stay safe

    Eyup Nathan. It says in the Bumper fun book of Fish Facts that the Mackerel moves from the continental shelf into shallow waters around Wales in Spring and moves off again in Autumn. Well it did. I know 'cos I caught it in August. I gave it directions to the Isle of Man where it could find some mates to hang out with and sent it on its way. I haven't seen it since so I'm glad to see you found a few. I'll sithi after, Dave.

      Aye; t’was good - only there a few hours before it got dark but caught and returned 4 coalies, one of which was a chunky lad about 2.5 pounds. Not hitting any pollack though - wonder why. Great to be out; saw dolphins too.
      Can I ask for advice again, marra?
      I’ve got some time off coming up and I want to get away and do some lure fishing / rock hopping - where would you head at this time of year for 2 or 3 days fishing and chilled out nature? I’ve been all over Scotland in the last 20 odd years up here but it’s always been to hill walk, walk dogs, nice pub, etc - not to fish.
      I am happy to drive a distance from Edinburgh; it’s always good to get away.
      I was looking at heading West - Ardnamurchan, or Oban way. Been there a few times before and it is stunning. Or am I missing the obvious on the East coast? Any tips or recommendations?

    • @SlippyLimpets
      @SlippyLimpets  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's been a been a shortage of pollack this year, my numbers are well down on previous years. Can't really explain it but hopefully they'll return next year.
      I'd head up to Skye, the average size of pollack is excellent. If that is a bit of a hike then the Mull of Galloway is worth a visit, the average size isn't as good as skye but the numbers make up for it. I can point you in the right direction for both spots. The fishing can be good up Oban and ardnamurchan but I've never fished there so can't help with marks. Let me know what you decide and, if you decide on Skye or MOG, I'll send you some links.

    • @garyweston1673

      Thank you Nathan - I decided on Dumfriesshire, around Brighouse Bay and then up around coast towards Wigtown. I got myself a kayak too and had two cracking days paddling, rock hopping and fishing - caught nowt though! Beautiful weather Tuesday / Weds, but not a nibble! I was only using lures - plastics and metals, and think I’d picked overly sandy spots in kayak , and not finding deep water with the metals. Loved being out though… think I need your expert advice on Skye and Mull of Galloway for next time - I’m looking at getting away again this weekend, and most fortnightly weekends, weather permitting.
      Cheers for any info - and the new video on Cod is interesting as I don’t know anything about beac casting. It was interesting to see and hear the different tackle, rigs and techniques. Keep at it mate!

    • @SlippyLimpets
      @SlippyLimpets  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep, balanced tackle really does increase the enjoyment of catching them. Footwear wise, I tend to use Scarpa approach shoes, the pair in this vid are the Ribelle Run and are really comfortable, great grip on grass and they have climbing shoe rubber so not bad on rock too. Also have a pair of Scarpa Crux which I use in the winter, they're a bit warmer having the full leather upper. Not cheap but last years and take some abuse. Hope this helps

    ..........aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand another cracking video. what drone is it your use, is it the dji mini 2? Yes mackerel are a hoot on an LRF rod, if i ever head to Littlehaven beach in south shields when they are in then i do it from there. little 5g-7g metal jig, wait for low tide then the first hour or so of the tide turning they hammer the jig, fish a cast usually and a blast to go with it. would rather fish them on an LRF, than a bigger rod with daylights. Can probably do it from any beach but its when i go down there with the family for the day as the kids enjoy it too.

      @SlippyLimpets  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Alreet Mr. Trance, You'll never look silly giving it a go, that's the beauty of sea fishing- you just never know!! I know you can get bass in the mornings off half moon rocks, slightly to the right of where Dunes used to be. I've tried from the ledges at Rockcliffe but not landed a fish yet. The most successful place I've fished in that area is Whitley Pipe at low tide ( the old sewerage pipe in front of the old paddling pool) at low tide. I've had cod, pollack, coalies and mackerel from there, but it does die down in the winter. I noticed the Slippy owl call whilst editing those vids and wanted to set it out then -don't blame your self- but I don't seem to be able to stop it 😂

A local angler told me there can be some good mullet fishing in the area in high summer and I'll be sure to pack a rod if I'm up there next summer. You need to learn how to pop your line to get the lures out from the rocks whenever you're snagged. Just leave a couple of feet of slack on your line and pull a couple of feet of line out from the rod a few inches above the reel and let the line go real quickly so that it creates a popping sensation and vibrations into the line that travels all the way down to the snagged lure and most of the time it is enough for the lure to be dislodged from the rocks. Keep popping that line until the lure gets dislodged. I find that I am able to get my lures back 90% of the time if it is snagged on rocks. Considering how expensive most of these lures are that saves you a lot of dinero! If you're snagged on wood or somebody else's lines that are stuck on the rocks than it is a different story since they would be 100 times harder to get unsnagged.
