  • While I was working on the suspension of my 1967 Dodge Dart, I ran into a torsion bar that is rusted in place. I figured I would take this chance to share a few different ways to get it out. If you own a classic MOPAR, Hopefully this will help you get yours out without resorting to the ultimate solution.

Here's a tip for you, get the smallest exhaust pipe clamp you can and put that on and then your jig, we've even put a dab of weld on the bar itself to keep tools from sliding, your being creative and that's what you need to do.

Thanks for the great tip Ray! I will definitely keep this in mind for when I am on my next project car.....if I ever manage to finish this one. Lol.

I had a similar issue on my sierra ended up going to a rental and getting a big old jack hammer took about thirty minutes but I’m not sure I could’ve gotten it out of the front even if I had cut the torsion bars they were so seized this is after soaking in pb blaster for weeks and countless hours of hammering with no luck

Welcome Number and thank you for the comment. I really need to get a Silverado or Sierra with the torsion bars. Would be a fun build. For the classic Mopars, I have seen guys beat them out with a sledge hammer to the control arm but I was concerned about ruining them so didn't go that route.

Did you remove the clip on the back side of the torsion bar

Yes. The clips were removed before trying to get them out. I have new clips and boots for the new ones ready to go.

Hello Cindy. Thanks for the comment! I had hit it with PB blaster and a MAP Gas Torch as well prior to shooting this video. I probably should have added that into the video itself.

There has never been nor will there ever be a torsion bar on a Mopar car that I can't get out...unless some one has welded it in!😂.... You can always remove the lower control arm from the K member by taking all the tension off the bar then remove the shock mounting bolt ..nut on front control arm pivot and any other suspension connected to arm then take circlip out of rear torsion bar crossmember then whack control arm to rear and out the bar comes still connected to the arm... Now you don't need to be on your back to finish the job! Some heat and cooling and penetrating oil/spray and a bmx neck four hole style bolted to the bar gives you a tool to hit on for free and out comes the bar!... If not then its time for the air hammer and end this tragedy!😂😂😂

@moparnut6286 Welcome back and thank you again for your insight. I actually gave the method of hitting the LCA with my 12lb sledge a try on the other side and she wouldn't budge. I am still pretty new with all this and was a bit worried about bending the control arm. Is that something I should have been worried about? And I am quickly learning that alternating heat an lube gets most things unstuck eventually. I would have never though to use the neck from a BMX to clamp on the bar though. Thank you for that bit of knowledge. One day, I will have the space for a decent compressor and air tools. And a lift. One day.

Just made a deal for a small compressor. I doubt it will run tools for long but it's a start.
