Nice video, but I think you missed one of the most important points that lithium has over lead acid; actual usable capacity. At high current draw (0.8C), a 100 AH lead acid battery will typically give you around 40% of that rating (40 AH). Most lithium batteries will give you about 90%. At low current draw, a lead acid will give a bit more, maybe up to 50% of capacity, but lithium typically will give you over 100% of rated capacity. So if you are using a 100 AH lead acid battery, you are typically getting between 40 and 50 AH of usage. Switching to lithium will give you nearly double the capacity if you go with the same AH rating.

What a great review on the batteries. Just what I was looking for. You must be an Engineer. Thanks for the Bluetooth device info. I just ordered it. Awsome Review. Oh, my Autopilot on order.
Thank you for the video. I like how you explained your reasoning for going lithium but I think you missed something important. If a lithium battery gets 3000 cycles and has a shelf life of 7 years, you would have to go through 429 cycles a year to get your money's worth out of that battery. If your lead acid battery gets 500 cycles and lasts 5 years you have to go through 100 cycles per year to get your money's worth. Obviously these aren't perfect numbers here but the point I'm trying to make is that if you are not a every day or every other day fisherman, I think you'll get more bang for your buck with a lead acid then lithium because you won't get all your money out of the lithium. There is a argument for weight, if 30 pounds is that important for you then lithium is the way to go. However, it's also annoying that you have to spend more money just to be able to check the charge of the lithium battery on the fly. Things to think about. Happy Fishing!
You misconstrue the meaning of "shelf life". Shelf life is how long the battery can be stored without loss of charge. You can decades out of these batteries if you care for them.
@@spiltmilt I stand corrected. I'm not sure if I agree that you can get decades out of the batteries considering the smallest ones didn't get commercialized until 1991 but your argument definitely holds more value now.
Super informative video as usual Tyler! I don't see many people talking in detail about batteries for the AutoPilot series. One thing I'd mention is that lithium ion is different than lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) and their discharge properties are slightly different. LiFePO4 ends up being an even better option than lithium ion. I've got a 30Ah Amped battery for my Garmin 93sv for ice fishing and open water and it's been awesome. If I got an AutoPilot you bet your butt I'd be going for a 100Ah Amped battery. Looking forward to more videos from your AutoPilot!
Great video and thorough and clear analysis! I bought a 30AH Amped Outdoors LiON battery for my Garmin 106 Ultra FF last fall and I have been loving it. I love the lightweight of those batteries. The bluetooth monitor seems really cool. I just watch the voltage on my FF but it would be really interesting to know precisely how much battery I have left at the end of an 11 or 12 hour day in the kayak.
I’ve been watching a lot videos on Lithium batteries . I decided to picked up a 100 amp lipo at 26 lbs for my Old Town PDL 120 motor trolling. I did a test for 4 hours with a Minn Kotta 30lb thrust . I used the speed mostly from 3 -4 trolling through small ripple waves I probably get more speed on flat water. After 4 hours the voltage drop to 12.5 volts. I’m not sure what the voltage cut off battery. When I got home I measure it to be 13.2 volts. So likely I used only 40% . Checked out my short video. Tyler, those 100ah batteries are so heavy. No way am I gonna schlep 35 pounds around in my Hobie. I've got an old Sears electric trolling motor that I've paired with a 20Ah Duracell deep cycle and at full speed I get 2 hours before it's dead. With the reduced weight it makes it so much easier to get around. I must say the if you're going to add a trolling motor to your kayak the choice for a battery can be a bit unnerving. Fish on!
It's worked flawlessly so far at telling me how low my voltage is when I am on the water. As a measure of true capacity I'd say it's fair when the battery is in use. I set it up to warn me when the battery is approaching 12 volts so that I know I should be getting back to the ramp.
So I am looking to buy a autopilot and of course a battery. Your video was very informative. So if I am done with my day of fishing and I am not going to fish for another couple weeks or so how would you recommend I store the battery? Thanks in advance for your help. Tight lines.
Great video thanks! I’m using the Autopilot 136. Used sealed lead acid battery this summer but decided to pick up the Ohmmu 156 which comes in tomorrow. I put long days on the water (10-12hrs and almost always trolling) so hope that the extra juice will help. I’ve had to paddle back twice, no fun paddling these tanks. Wonder what you are currently using and do you have a recommendation for a cheap battery monitor solution that can give you an accurate %capacity used or remaining?
To be perfectly honest I would never again buy a lithium battery that doesn't have built in Bluetooth capabilities which is why I went with the Aolithium and Rebel batteries for my motorized kayaks. th-cam.com/video/SajAz1ZBuHc/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for another fantastic video! I'm wondering if after some additional time you are still liking the battery monitor? I'm considering ordering it and I'm just double checking! One other thing I've noticed in the past and hoping it would benefit you with the purchase of this monitor using the link below am I correct with this?
Thank you very for your video..My son and I are in the process if buying old town 136 & 120 auto pilot kayaks..Is the battery that you bought for your kayak standard size?
Much thanx for your video. I've got a 120 inbound. Can you tell me is a special charger required for a lithium battery or will my 20 year old charger that I've used for all my car charger needs treat a lithium well?
Did you choose the amped outdoors battery?(I'm sorry if I missed it) and if you did then I'm assuming that it fits in the provided old town box? Thanks
Man I was going to get a 54ah from Dakota lithium to power my motor guide xi3 with gps. Had never heard of the other brands but found the 80 ah from amped outdoors for around the same price, and only 6 lbs heavier. Thanks for the informative video!
Hey Tyler, I'm brand new to kayak fishing. Just bought a 106 power by MK, got a 100amh lithium battery. Question is what blue tooth device did you hook up to the battery to inable you to monitor the charge/rate of discharge?
The bluetooth monitor linked in the description only gives you voltage. I ended up ditching the Amped battery for an Aolithium battery with bluetooth built in to monitor remaining amps and amp usage amzn.to/3MtzNGM
Excellent video! I was thinking I’d rather have two lead acid batteries and be able to travel extra long distances during one fishing trip than invest the money in a lithium battery. Would that be true or does 1 lithium battery hold a charge equivalent to two 100 amp lead acid batteries?
With two brand new SLA batteries you are going to able to go further than on a single lithium. However, the performance of the SLA will decline more rapidly with time. Additionally rather than adding 30 lbs of weight to the kayak with a single battery you will be adding 120 lbs with 2 100 ah SLA.
Hey one more question I got the supplies to make my own spinners but how far back should I put back my gear before I attach it to my downriver clip for upper Columbia river chinook? Thanks!
It's been a lifesaver so far. A couple times I've pushed this battery. I set it to warn me about voltage drop and once these lithium start voltage dropping they drop fast. I am actually waiting on a new lithium battery that has built in Bluetooth that track your voltage, amps in and amps out, # of cycles, and actual percentage remaining charge but for it's cost the aftermarket Bluetooth version featured in this video does what I want it to do.
So I know that this is old, but I've read few post and after some research here is what I got. The battery box is 10W x 17H x 11D where 17H I assume the biggest side and is L. I found 12v 277A Dakota that is 14.6L x 7.7W x 10.75H, where in this case H(high) is for D (deep). Yes it 65Lbs, but person like my self under 150lb soaking wet that's not an issue. Am I right with my calculations? Could that battery be used on that motor? It's Dakota group 31 I believe 12v277A. By the way, thank you for all the information you provide, helped my buy my 120PDL.
You sold me on the Amped Outdoors but they’re out of stock. There is another issue though with 100ah batteries. In the future, would you be able to provide an update based on your knowledge of the actual internal dimensions of the Autopilot 120’s battery box? It appears that standard 100ah battery sizes are 12.06 x 6.8 x 8.8. Apparently, while lithium batteries may be lighter, they are not necessarily smaller in dimensions. The Battleborn dimensions are 12.75 X 6.875 X 9 in. (L x W x H). Dakota Lithium dimensions are 12.99 x 6.77 x 8.66. On the surface, it appears as if the Amped Outdoors is the only battery that may have fit into your Autopilot. I’m about to purchase an Autopilot 120, but I’m now on hold pending trying to find a 100ah battery that fits.
Thanks Tyler! I’m now placing my order for the Autopilot 120 as we speak. You can tell Old Town that my decision was finalized by the information you provided. I actually contacted Old Town Customer and a service rep gave me a weird 13.x length, which I thought had to be incorrect. I appreciate your help with this.
Do you have to keep it on a trickle charge when nnot using or can you take it off after it's full? I don't use my trolling motor everyday, just on the weekends. Do the lithium batteries come with a charger?
I read somewhere that you can charge a lithium battery with a normal battery charger. But I saw you commented that you need a special lithium battery charger. What's the truth? And are there any 100ah 12v for under 400$?
I transitioned to the Aolithium 100 ah Bluetooth battery so I'd have real time information on the remaining amps on my battery and can monitor my usage. I've been using the Aolithium for over a year now and its great. I sold the Amped. amzn.to/3PB4bju
What would be the best batter for ocean fishing trolling and not lazy man fishing at all just hard core fishing trying to be on the water 7-8 hours I'm using a deep cycle battery and it's junk last 2 hoursb
What graph are you using and I’m considering a Garmin echomap 73sv with the update g-54 transducer what do you think about it. I think you would be paid for this video you are going to save people a lot of time and money thank you for making it.
I went with the Helix because I already owned it. Also Humminbird is owned by Johnson Outdoors and which also owns Old Town. There have been several promotions where you get a free Helix with your kayak and probably why that combination seems so prevalent.
Hi, I'm a new subscriber and absolutely love your videos. I am also new to kayaking and battery powered motors. (I know virtually nothing about dc power) You are extremely detailed and informative which really adds to the trustworthy factor. Thank you again. I just purchased the Old Town auto pilot 120 and I’m looking for a power supply. I was looking to buy the “Amped Outdoors” lithium battery at your recommendation but their outta stock. I decided to go with the mighty Max on Amazon as they are now selling for $600. I have read the reviews (don’t know if I’m taking a chance with them or not) and they've got four out of five stars. Do you feel there is a better battery out there for that price point or do you think it's worth taking a chance with Mighty Max? Also, what type of lithium charger would you recommend? Thanks a lot for your help and keep up with the great videos. - Jim
I am now running ReBel Batteries that have a similar price point to the Mighty Max but have built in Bluetooth monitoring. I love mine. www.rebelbatteries.com?afmc=1d I'd look for a 10ah charger specifically designed for lithium
@@spiltmilt Thanks a lot for your reply. I just purchased the Rebel Battery. I'm also looking at the "NOCO GENIUS10, 10-Amp Fully-Automatic Smart Charger, 6V and 12V Battery Charger" as it received good reviews. What do think of this charger? Looking forward to more great videos!
So you shouldn't rely on the aftermarket monitor for the state of charge? Can you go into more detail? That's the primary (actually the only reason) I would be interested a lithium battery monitor.
As I stated in the video its very good at monitoring the voltage output on your battery which as it approaches 12 volt allows me to know when the battery is getting below the point it will power my motor. As for an absolute measure of remaining charge its okay but not great. There are other battery monitors out there that will measure exactly how many amps have been drawn off your battery but those also assume you have a 100% to begin with. Nothing is perfect.
@@spiltmilt Have you looked at the Ionic lithiums? Their phone/tablet app apparently shows the current state of charge, time left until the BMS shuts the battery down and, when charging, it shows time left before the battery is fully charged along with about a half dozen other factors for each battery including the battery's temperature.
What about a kill switch? Will the kayak keep going if you were to fall out? I want to put a trolling motor on my Nucanoe but can't find much info about kill switches
On further investigation the firefly is a carbon foam AGM battery not lithium so it is heavier. Appears ocean planet energy offers a Li product as well (Lithionics brand). oceanplanetenergy.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/86/2020/05/12V125A-G31-5CND-LRB-R3.pdf

It's worked flawlessly so far at telling me how low my voltage is when I am on the water. As a measure of true capacity I'd say it's fair when the battery is in use. I set it up to warn me when the battery is approaching 12 volts so that I know I should be getting back to the ramp.
@@spiltmilt I will be running an amped outdoors 60ah lithium. Would you also suggest an alarm at 12v as a reminder.
Yup. I set mine at 12.1 volts. That way I know I'll have enough juice to get to the ramp
Sheesh what a great video. Thanks!
So I am looking to buy a autopilot and of course a battery. Your video was very informative. So if I am done with my day of fishing and I am not going to fish for another couple weeks or so how would you recommend I store the battery? Thanks in advance for your help. Tight lines.
Always best to top it off for short duration storage. If planning on longer periods (i.e months) then store at 60-70%
Nice job. Super helpful !
Yes still very happy with the monitor. Yes you can use the link below it helps this channel too
@@spiltmilt thanks for the quick response Tyler!
Thank you very for your video..My son and I are in the process if buying old town 136 & 120 auto pilot kayaks..Is the battery that you bought for your kayak standard size?
Much thanx for your video. I've got a 120 inbound. Can you tell me is a special charger required for a lithium battery or will my 20 year old charger that I've used for all my car charger needs treat a lithium well?
i wish i could find an autopilot in denver! i love my outback but spotlock is what im after
It's amazing! Best of luck in your hunt!
Did you choose the amped outdoors battery?(I'm sorry if I missed it) and if you did then I'm assuming that it fits in the provided old town box? Thanks
Yes and it does fit. I eventually upgraded to batteries with Bluetooth monitoring
Thanks for the info!
Great video once again thanks!
Great video well broken down better in the long run to get the lithium one then to buy multiple acid ones down the road
Man I was going to get a 54ah from Dakota lithium to power my motor guide xi3 with gps. Had never heard of the other brands but found the 80 ah from amped outdoors for around the same price, and only 6 lbs heavier. Thanks for the informative video!
On another note, how is it car topping that thing? Do you put it on from the back of the side using one of those bar things? Thank you
Yes I use a rolling assist bar. th-cam.com/video/1zwgMoLrnCw/w-d-xo.html
Thank you! Well done.
Wow! Great info, thanks.
Hey man. Thanks for the information. Do you have an opinion on the AGM batteries?
Inexpensive and heavy but they will get the job done. I didn't do a ton of research on brands because it was always my intention to go lithium.
Hey one more question I got the supplies to make my own spinners but how far back should I put back my gear before I attach it to my downriver clip for upper Columbia river chinook? Thanks!
20' to 30'
Hi Tyler, How do you like the aftermarket Bluetooth battery charger so far? does it function well? easy to use and accurate?
It's been a lifesaver so far. A couple times I've pushed this battery. I set it to warn me about voltage drop and once these lithium start voltage dropping they drop fast. I am actually waiting on a new lithium battery that has built in Bluetooth that track your voltage, amps in and amps out, # of cycles, and actual percentage remaining charge but for it's cost the aftermarket Bluetooth version featured in this video does what I want it to do.
What do you think about the FPV-Power waterproof batteries?
12V 50A the kit has 2 for 100Ah total and costs 1,150.
I don't think there is any way you are going to fit a 277amp battery on an Old Town kayak.
The dimensions are 16x11x9. All of those batteries will fit.
What battery are you using for your graph I was thinking about the little wilderness system battery.
I am using a 10ah lithium battery from Dakota
Do you have to keep it on a trickle charge when nnot using or can you take it off after it's full? I don't use my trolling motor everyday, just on the weekends. Do the lithium batteries come with a charger?
No I just top it off and shelve it.
@@spiltmilt Thank you for your reply.
I read somewhere that you can charge a lithium battery with a normal battery charger. But I saw you commented that you need a special lithium battery charger. What's the truth? And are there any 100ah 12v for under 400$?
Yes the Chin's 100ah battery actually has decent reviews even in tear down videos amzn.to/3pDEBzS
May we ask, are you still using the Amped Outdoors battery? And…are you still happy with this selection?
I transitioned to the Aolithium 100 ah Bluetooth battery so I'd have real time information on the remaining amps on my battery and can monitor my usage. I've been using the Aolithium for over a year now and its great. I sold the Amped. amzn.to/3PB4bju
What would be the best batter for ocean fishing trolling and not lazy man fishing at all just hard core fishing trying to be on the water 7-8 hours I'm using a deep cycle battery and it's junk last 2 hoursb
Have you ever tried or thought about monster marine lithium. Bill Dance says he uses it and is blue tooth says I can't find much on this
No. Never heard of them.
What graph are you using and I’m considering a Garmin echomap 73sv with the update g-54 transducer what do you think about it. I think you would be paid for this video you are going to save people a lot of time and money thank you for making it.
I use the that same Garmin for my ice fishing setup and it works great. On my kayaks I use the Humminbird Helix 5 Chirp/GPS G2 and it works great.
Spilt Milt Productions I see everyone pretty much using hummingbird on old town is there a reason you didn’t put Garmin on your kayak?
I went with the Helix because I already owned it. Also Humminbird is owned by Johnson Outdoors and which also owns Old Town. There have been several promotions where you get a free Helix with your kayak and probably why that combination seems so prevalent.
Damn solid video!!!!!
I love mine. www.rebelbatteries.com?afmc=1d
I'd look for a 10ah charger specifically designed for lithium
@@spiltmilt Thanks a lot for your reply. I just purchased the Rebel Battery. I'm also looking at the "NOCO GENIUS10, 10-Amp Fully-Automatic Smart Charger, 6V and 12V Battery Charger" as it received good reviews. What do think of this charger?
Looking forward to more great videos!
Does the ReBel 100amp hour group 31 battery fit in old town battery box? I know they recommend group 27 , but some group 31 size fit as well.
Great video! What charger are you using?
th-cam.com/video/7Ay8IIETmQg/w-d-xo.html
Great video thanks
What battery charger are you using? And what battery are you running for the fish finder? Thanks 👍
I'm using a 10amp fast charger designed for lithium available from Amped Outdoors. For my fishfinder I am using a 10ah Dakota Lithium.
@@spiltmilt does both batteries fit in the original box? Thanks for the reply 🤙
Do you have a link for your fishing pool holder
Do you mean rod holder?
What about a kill switch? Will the kayak keep going if you were to fall out? I want to put a trolling motor on my Nucanoe but can't find much info about kill switches
Yes a kill switch is built into all Old Town powered kayaks.
ohmmu has same cells inside just like batllborn but with higher capacity cells in ohmmu
How do I drain it down for long storage?
Out of curiosity, why did firefly not make the cut of what you chose to evaluate on Li batteries?
Never heard of them.
On further investigation the firefly is a carbon foam AGM battery not lithium so it is heavier. Appears ocean planet energy offers a Li product as well (Lithionics brand). oceanplanetenergy.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/86/2020/05/12V125A-G31-5CND-LRB-R3.pdf
So now that you have been using the Rebel LiFePO4 where does it rank compared to the others on your list?
I would rank it as #1. Affordable and you can't believe how handy it is to have that Bluetooth functionality
@@spiltmilt Thanks Tyler. I’m waiting for them to get back in stock and order one.
Should be new ones coming in the next week or two.
@@spiltmilt thanks for the info!
Is the batt. box on the 120 auto pilot 12x7x9"? Group 27 measurements.
Yes
@@spiltmilt Just so you know the batt. box on a 2023 auto pilot is 13x7x9 This allowed me a greater batt. selection. You Auto pilot must be a different year w/ a diff. size box. Thank you again.
Do you have any batteries for sale man? I can’t find a decent 12v 100ah in stock for my autopilot 120 That I bought yesterday
The Chin's is a good value amzn.to/3toVJuD
I wish I could win this beautiful kayak old Town autopilot so I can complete my mission of saving our beautiful waterways universe by picking up Trash and keeping it clean
Would this be the same for the 106 with no auto pilot?
Yes the same would apply
@@spiltmilt okay thanks. Geez that's alot of money for a battery on top of spending 2500 already lol. What's the run time between those 2 different batteries
Perfect
Hey I’m getting In to upper Columbia river chinook and for my spinners I’m wondering if I can just attach a bluefox spinner to it and troll with that or would I need to make my own?
You can run a Bluefox behind a flasher in a pinch. The weight will slow the action a bit but it can still work.
Spilt Milt Productions thanks!
Spilt Milt Productions what if I have downriggers?
Downriggers are fine. Many people use them at Chelan Falls and Brewster pool.
So do you think a 50amp lithium battery will last me about 4 hours trolling ?
You will almost certainly get more than 4 hours of trolling time but how much will depend on speed. I have a video covering range in this video. th-cam.com/video/mbc2O6wxCXc/w-d-xo.html
I was looking all over for a test and explanation about batteries , you did a great job , thanks 😀 but I have another question , I would like to take my German Shepherd on the Kayak ....is there enough room in the back ? 🐕🦺He is an excellent swimmer and like to play with the seals ....
There is plenty of room on the AutoPilots and MK kayaks for a big dog in the back
Update👉everything is sold out🔋
Wow …we pay £3 per Ah here in uk
What battery tracker is that
There is a link in the description
