I grew up near the old Seaboard Coastline NW of Atlanta and walked those rails as a kid in the 1970's, in the caboose era, collecting the occasional glass ball the hopper cars would drop. There were gouges in the crossties from a derailed car that was dragged for over 5 miles. That section is part of the Silver Comet Trail today.

The U.S. averages 3 derailments every single day. That's 1-2 orders of magnitude higher (or in some cases, even more) than any other developed country. Thankfully, in a case like this, it's obvious to the engineer that you can't run at speed over a rail like this, so that keeps them "relatively" safe. It's when they're poorly maintained but still look fine that you have to worry, because then they're hauling the cargo at speed - that's when things like the derailment this past year happen and the damage runs well into the billions or more.

Most of the tracks down here in Ohio are really strait but its just that one stretch of tracks, the owners wont fix them, they have been neglected and we don't have laws that force them to fix the rails (or if we do there just not taken care of by the police). The laws in Ohio are different then other states, if you where from Ohio (like me) you would understand why. Also boxcars flip easy unlike other types of trains and its the train drivers fault for driving fast, the train wouldn't of derailed if it went slower and i know that it takes a long time for trains to slow down but its his fault for not knowing about them ahead of times.

Let me guess Scott, this was down by Cecil, right? If so, it wouldn't surprise me, as that portion is one of the last major portions of the track that needs to be re-worked. There are a few short sections that are in need of re-work, but are still usable, and a couple of longer sections that really need it badly. In fairness, they are doing their best, considering the limited number of maintenance crewmen they have. Also, they did get a brand new tamper a while back, so they can do a better job of getting the ballast under the ties for leveling and rail realignment . Thanks for the video.

Or in reasonably safe condition compared to, say, a properly maintained rail line where derailments aren't something that happens so often it rarely even makes the news? Like, compared to Japanese or European rails, for instance.
(For context, I do know that these rail sections were bought by another company that has spent quite a lot of time fixing them - I know it isn't the company that allowed them to get into this condition in the first place anymore.)

I could hardly believe what I was watching. Here in the UK tracks are regularly inspected by engineering trains wirh state of the art laser technology fitted on the underside. In London (where more than 50 trains an hour run over the tracks at peak times) daily inspections are carried out. As soon as a fault is discovered, it is visually inspected and mostly a 15mph speed limit imposed. Full repair is normally completed within a few days by a team of engineers working overnight.
In the past, we had a few derailments caused by excess speed over compound points. Most of these are now protected by a speed control signal on the approach. This system has 2 sensors about 50 feet apart. as the train passes over the first, it starts a timer which drops the hammer at the second point. If a train is going too fast, full braking will be applied overriding the driver and recording the exact speed. Several drivers have lost their jobs over the years as a result of serious or repeated mistakes.

The irony is the German network is in a far worse shape then this line. Not to mention UK, that is absolute catastrophe. People may laught at these worn out tracks, but the point is, Europe does not even have trafic that would have worn them out in the first place.
This track needs tens of thousands of dollars the company is going to invest as profits are made. German tracks need tens of bilions of dollars not only no one has, but noone is going to waste onto the state owned infrastructure manager. The only ones that can fix the rails are people who have no idea how to fix rails.
But yeah. They have shiny new rail and cannot keep up with the demand for asphalt. Well. At least no one can laught at thestate of their infrastrucutre, right?

These cars moved hundreds if not thousands of miles. On the last few miles they move slowly down a slow speed branch line to final destination. Hundreds of polluting trucks were off the road. Freight rates were kept down for the small town customers served by the line. A derailment on this line is a minor inconvenience. Patently insane is running propane in trucks at 70 mph on the interstate. The likelihood of injury, death and widespread damage is far far far far far greater on the highway than anything that will happen in this small branhline

If I were in a position of authority in that town, I would not permit the use of that block of track for ANY type of freight hauling. The irresponsibility of any RR to transport ANYTHING over that track until all the rails are replaced with brand new, inspected rail stock, laid over brand new sleepers on completely re- graded and reballasted rail bed is beyond the pale. Suppose just one single tank car derails and rolls on it side and leaks a caustic or poisonous, gaseous cargo. Would you like that train riding rails right next to your business or house? I seriously doubt it. I guess you are unaware of the numerous news stories and YT videos of trains derailing and tipping on tracks in MUCH better condition than these.
