    The fact that Cameron sacrificed screenplay to maintain the accuracy of the alien life-cycle is exactly why this movie is so great. The attention to detail surpasses that of most movies. The director cared about the story, not the paycheck.

      A Chaps well if this was said in aliens, then it could be a reference to how Ripley found Dallas and Brett in the drone's hive, where she saw them converted into eggs, and ultimately ended Dallas's suffering by destroying the hive with a flamethrower. This scene was absent from the theatrical release of alien I presume.

    • @laurentecrivain6944

    I admire Cameron for always trying to get rid of inconsistencies and illogical things in his movies. Obviously, you can still point me to a long lists of those happening in Avatar, Terminator, or other of his movies, but, compared to most other directors ... he is extremely thorough when it comes to the logic of the screenplay.
    BTW, such approach would definitely not hurt Prometheus or Covenant. Maybe even made them enjoyable movies.

    • @tronam
      @tronam ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And he’s almost always already aware of any inconsistencies before anyone brings them up. Recently in a screening Q&A someone started to ask about the Metkayina in A2’s final battle and before they even finished the question Cameron said “Where did they go, right?”. There was an entire regroup sequence shot, but ultimately cut because during editing they made a conscious decision to stay focused on the core family at the cost of some continuity. Choosing what to keep or remove in the final edit must be a really difficult process, especially after spending so much of your life on something.

    Cameron's concern about the timing of Ripley running into Burke and the time needed for implantation just goes to show the difference in what went on in making the great movies of the 70's/80's (and a few in the 90's) vs. what is made today. There was actual care taken in the logic behind fantastical, sci fi situations where today the attitude is "who the @#$% cares. We're just making a movie with some famous franchise title stamped on it to sell tickets."

      Maybe she finds him cocooned but not implanted yet, tries to free him, but then the egg in front of him curls open and she nopes out fast.
      We see only the look of horror in his eyes before the camera cuts back to Ripley continuing to race through the tunnel following the tracer signal.
      We get Ripley's compassion *and* Burke's just-deserts!
      On their way out, Ripley and Newt pass him face-hugged, though the camera doesn't draw attention to it, it is just there as they pass.

    I love that Cameron left it out. From the moment Ripley is in the lift, prepping her weapons, it's mother versus mother. It becomes a narrative within a narrative. Perfectly crafted. That being said... Had he included Burke in the scene, he would have been better off Burke being pre-impregnated. Begging Ripley to let him out before a facehugger got him. And having Ripley show "mercy" not by letting him out of the cocoon but by handing him a grenade. That would have been bad-arse.

  • @MrJakeKale
    @MrJakeKale 7 ปีที่แล้ว +56

    I'm fine with it staying cut, for two reasons. One, while it's interesting to learn Brett and Dallas's fate, restoring that scene in Alien does screw up the pacing of the finale. Two, I agree with Cameron's rationale for cutting it - it doesn't fit with the established implantation timescale. Perhaps a better solution would be for Ripley to find a concooned Burke with facehugger still attached, at which point she could either put him out of his suffering or not. But really, it's not needed - we can work out what happened to him.

    It would've been cool to see Burke get his in the end, I'm glad Cameron paid such close attention to details. This is one of my biggest issues with later Aliens movies like AvP. The time between face-hugger, to chest-burster, to full-grown Xenomorph would take place in a matter of 10 minutes in these new movies, when it clearly took far longer in the first Alien movie. Those little details make a huge difference. Better to lose a cool moment rather than sacrifice the storytelling

    I've always liked the fact that we the viewers aren't shown explicitly what happens to Burke (and Hudson for that matter). We know, we get it, the terror and death that awaits them has been well established. The important thing is seeing that Burke couldn't escape the building tragedy he facilitated. Good cutting Cameron! Interesting that there was a similar scene similarly cut from Alien I with Dallas in a cocoon...

    • @gruphenio6787
      @gruphenio6787 ปีที่แล้ว

      The reason for the cut is exactly what I expected. Based on what we saw in Alien, it would take about 18-24 hrs for the Alien to be impregnated…based on this, a bit of a waste of time filming this scene in the first place - he would have only been cocooned there for about 45 mins!
      Even the others taken earlier on (Dietrich, Apone etc) would only be in the facehugger stage at this point

      Interestingly, in the comics (yes, there was an Aliens comic book series!) Ripley gave him a grenade from her pouch and told him to use it. He was too much of a coward and said something like "N-no. I can't..." She leaves him. Then the rest of the scenes are just like in the movie leaving me to conclude that Burke died when the planet blew up.

      People who don't live with honour won't likely die with honour. Burke probably would want someone next to him (and thus caught in the blast zone) as he pulls the pin, a form of substitute hand holding for a cowardly and selfish man, whom we can guess has no love based relationships back on Earth. It's a justifiable pre-judgement based on Burke's actions and earlier revealed intents. So, I too wouldn't hand Burke the grenade, he is not a decent enough person to bring about his end the way he should in a situation like that.

      "The death he deserves ..." "He deserved it ..." and lines like that. I was a fan of the Dexter TV series, but seeing the episodes on YT and reading the comments is CREEPY. Many deserve death, but if your life was closely examined you too might be among them.
      Myself as well, no human is exempt. Delivering death to those who "deserve" it though (as many Dexter comments applauded, and recommended we start doing in secret as he did *!*) does terrible things to ourselves. Ripley is Ripley, the hero we admire, because she didn't gloat. She gave him a way out to take while he still had his humanity, then moved on to save the innocent.
      When I've been hurt (and for some reason this year 2019 has really piled on me) the only way out of the anger and grief, I've found, what works, is to HELP someone else. This isn't goody goody. Helping someone else is selfish ... it cures me.

In editing you have to be ready to give things up, and to a point it's better to have too much stuff than not enough. When Jon Badham had a set made up for WarGames, and the scene was cut before even they filmed in it, his response was something like "well, they have to tear down the set whether we shoot or not".

    The scene belongs on the cutting room floor. Not only is it narratively unnecessary (as the theatrical scene with the Alien peeling back its lips in preparation for a strike makes it clear what is about to happen to Burke), and not only is the timing insufficient for the facehugger to be absent, but most egregiously, the scene repeats the double-suicide moment between Gorman and Vasquez... but with only a single participant. It just doesn't work. At all.

    'Aliens' is always broadcast now with many deleted scenes added back in - about Ripley having a daughter; about characters on the planet before finding the aliens. I think the film is better in its original cinematic release, with those cut. Same, too, for finding Burke in the hive.
    One reinstated scene that I think does fit well is the sentry robots guarding the corridor. Adds some action, adds to the tension of trying to keep the aliens out, and fits logically between 'that should keep them out' and 'oh, they must have found another way in'.

    Having been a young adult (late 20's) in the opening day audience I can tell you that the brilliance of this film was the decision not to lend itself to pretension. The other thing that made "Aliens" a sensation was the way Cameron avoided riffing on anything in the original. This was fresh and nothing felt borrowed.
    This was the first I've heard of this scene and my initial reaction was to wonder why Cameron hadn't cut this from the first draft.
    As purposed here, this would this have been a re-hash of what was a deleted scene from the original (as an act of compassion for a character the audience truly appreciated.)
    To have included this scene would have diminished the choice of Vasquez and Gorman to die with dignity by allowing the same "out" to a treacherous coward.
    The two "story beats" would have been too close to each other as well. It just goes back to my original point.
    As seen on opening day everybody was crushed with suspense the first time that tracking device picked up a signal because Newt didn't exist yet. By cutting a minute of toss-away footage introducing the family, all of that tension was dissipated in the name of making a quick buck.
    While I understand that fan fiction keeps many a franchise maleable far beyond any reasonable shelf life (and my generation pretty much ignited that flame,) sometimes one has to step back and ponder the benefits of philoshophizing a glass of water. The longer you stare at it, the less refreshing it becomes.
    Case in point: Look at the early reactions to "Solo" and ask yourself "Have I had enough yet?"

    Regarding Carter J. Burke’s fate and whether his hugger would have finished its business in time to make way for a dialogue scene in the film: you mentioned in another video (Ozona’s notes maybe, if I recall?) it was discovered that they could dynamically evolve either to gestate, to reach sexual maturity, or both at a faster rate if the hive determines their survival is threatened. There could be the possibility that a queen could signal commands to both drones and huggers telepathically, if you were to caveat off of Church’s research as well. That is still quite a lot of allegory for an audience to be aware of in order to suspend disbelief.
    That said, Cameron making an executive decision to play it safe and for the reasons you mentioned in this video was a good call. Scenes like that are what makes a fan stay curious and seek out the cannon in the source material to find answers to the finer details. Great video here! I own the Alien Quadrilogy box set and never took the time (yet) to view all the extras. This makes me want to dust it off now, thanks!

I can't remember where I saw the sentry gun scene but it may be in a director's cut of the movie where Hudson and Vasquez were in the access tunnels programming sentry guns. Then they went off, killing a lot of the creatures. Hicks is about to grab his rifle and finish them when Ripley stops him because the guns stopped shooting. Nothing happens so they know they're safe for the moment. And Hicks says "Next time, they'll just come and knock." That line scared me.

    I'm glad when a director has respect for the source material to delete a good scene. While it would be nice for this to be in the film as a sort of last laugh to an evil prick it makes more sense to go by what's been established as far as the Xeno's lifecycle is concerned.

    I have to agree with Cameron. He is known for his attention to detail and this is a perfect example of it.

    Love your videos! Question: Why did the company not receive Ripley's last recorded message at the end of Alien when she was in the shuttle and about to go into hyper-sleep? If they did receive it, did they decide to ignore it and let her float around in space for eternity, not counting on a deep-salvage team finding her? And why did they not believe her story when she did return to earth? Supposedly the company knew all along about the derelict ship, the eggs, and the hostile aliens because they had previously intercepted the derelict ship's warning beacon. Did all of the current WY employees just not know about this information because at least 57 years had gone by and it was considered a dead topic?

      I don't think that last message of Ripley's was supposed to go out to anyone. I have my doubts that a small escape shuttle like Narcissus would've even had the proper equipment to do that. I think Ripley's message was more just something for herself and/or for anyone who found her. Also, I'd imagine that after 57 years, virtually anyone in Weyland-Yutani who was involved with Special Order 937, Ash, and the Nostromo incident as a whole would've been dead or gone. It seems like Burke only found out about it during the colonization of LV-426.

    “Bill me”.....Ripley says this when the discussion ensues regarding blowing up an expensive terraforming compound.
    Back in the 80’s, “bill me” was a popular phrase. I still use it sometimes.

    I'm glad that they cut the footage, especially for the reasons stated. This reason has been one of the primary reasons why I have never enjoyed Alien3 or any of the Alien based films since. The life cycle of the alien is clearly implied in both Alien and Aliens, then seems to be subsequently thrown out the window after that. Its infuriating to say the least, none of the other movies make any sense when viewed in this context. Don't even get me started on the magic egg inside the Sulaco >.

    Ripley thought that she was handing Burke a grenade to end his pain. But in the darkness, Ripley actually pulled out the USB solid state flash drive that contained the finished screenplays for all of the future Alien sequels and prequels. If you watch this Burke deleted scene closely, you can see that the flash drive's cap easily and quietly falls off. In the Vasquez death scene, the actual M40 High Explosive Dual Purpose (HEDP) Grenade is equpped with a tightly-fitted vacuum-sealed cap to prevent the grenade's cap from accidentally coming off during combat and the vacuum-sealed grenade cap makes a sharp popping sound when it is pried off. The USB flash drive's cap easily detaches without a popping sound.
    After the alien queen was expelled from the Sulaco, Ripley was supposed to time-travel from Earth time 2179 back to Earth time 1987, copy the USB flash drive's screenplays onto 3.5-inch floppy disks, and deliver the disks to the screenwriters for Alien 3 and the other sequels and prequels. After Ripley realizes that she left the flash drive with Burke, Hicks sharply scolds her, "Ripley, damn, now all the other sequels and prequels will never be as good as the first two!" Ripley briefly considers whether she should sabotage Hicks' cryotube to hide her mistake, but sets up everyone for hypersleep. So we will never know just how exciting and amazing all of the other Alien sequels and prequels that followed "Alien" and "Aliens" could have been since the flash drive was lost forever on LV-426!

    I personally like it on an artistic level- seeing Burke get his comeuppance and what it does for Ripleys character- showing she’s still no-nonsense but merciful. But I agree with Cameron’s logic of cutting it out.

  • @Khannea

    The scene adds little, and it would have been gratuitous. If I had included it, being Cameron, I'd depicted burke not as "facehuggered", but violently compressed into a knot, limbs broken, and in the early process of becoming an egg, rather than having an embryo inside. The scene was under-effected, uncompelling. Aliens are far more horrific than "just some slime on his hands and face", and I would have shown the swollen distended face of Burke, his limbs half dissolved, broken (or twisted) and braided into a recently grown egg. I might also have added some new xenomorph shapes, i.e. a new organic thing that's burrowed into Burke's abdomen, and which should be clearly visible moving inside a gelatinous, organic sack embedded in Burke's torso.

    I think it could have been done well if Ripley had been moving through the hive and happened to spot Burke's shiny ID card used to make video calls laying on the ground.. Laying just under where he was cocooned with a facehugger presently attached. She just happens to spot it.. Goes over and hunches down to get a closer look and sees his feet dangling. Scans up and there he is. She winces in silent horror and moves on..

    Given this being one of the greats among scifi action movies, I go with Cameron: Adding a time continuation error for the sake of a non-relevant, albeit strong scene would have lessened that particular movie. Especially seeing that, a minute later, Ripley encounters Newt, who is not even being facehugged by this time.

    • @chamoo232
      @chamoo232 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It's one of the complaint I have about AVP. We don't even have time to learn the character's names and there is already chestbursters coming out and 20 seconds later there is adult xenomorphs running everywhere. In the original Alien it took them hours to get out of the derelic ship and come back on the Nostromo and what seemed like another 12 hours before the facehugger fell off.

      True, but I take that as the predators have enhanced the eggs and such to make the births more quicker for the testing of their young who go there. The Aliens have to birth quicker for the testing to be effective.

      I specifically remember them mentioning trying to beat a rival research team to the site. I thought we would find out the other team had beat them there and they had been gestated. That would have kept intact the hours it takes for the facehugger eggs to grow, but no... That's not what they did. I'm a better writer than the writers of AvP....

    good to note Cameron's concern for logic and the lifespan / timeline of the alien phases. That's what bothered me the most about Alien vs Predator (yes, the movie had a LOT of problems, but many I could suspend my disbelief and say "okay, it's fantasy/sci-fi", but the aliens (some of them) suddenly only needing a few MINUTES to attach, gestate, and burst through the chest...that was just terrible.
