  • One of the worst Disney sequels ever! How did this happen to a great...good...decent enough movie? Nostalgia Critic takes a look at Mulan II.
    Support this week's charity - www.centerforenrichedliving.org/
Mulan II is a 2004 American direct-to-video Disney animated film directed by Darrell Rooney and Lynne Southerland and is a sequel to the 1998 animated film Mulan (originally released by theaters), featuring songs by Jeanine Tesori and Alexa Junge. Much of the cast from the first film returned, excluding Eddie Murphy (Mushu), Miriam Margolyes (The Matchmaker), James Hong (Chi-Fu), Chris Sanders (Little Brother), and Matthew Wilder (Ling's singing voice). Murphy and Margolyes were replaced by Mark Moseley and April Winchell, respectively; Little Brother was voiced by Frank Welker, and Gedde Watanabe does his own singing for the sequel.

I honestly don’t care about the changes for the Live Action Mulan, I’m so excited for it, It’s still the same story, you guys should understand that the whole point of Mulan isn't about the talking comedic dragon, it’s not about the love interest and it’s not even about the songs what so ever
This whole story is about Mulan who is a female character who fights and kick ass for the right reasons, she does this to save her father's life, she does this so she brings honor to her family, she does this to prove herself that she can do anything
This movie is supposed to be about her, it’s one of those films that leads her up to become hero and saves her country, so i get you guys want this version to be exactly like the original Disney version, it’s still is, but sometimes, when it comes to Remakes and adaptations, it has to have changes to make it stand out on it’s own, there’s no need to keep it the same as the other version, it’s kinda pointless if they do that

Mulan's whole attitude is kinda weird. She went to a match--maker in the first movie and was well aware of the cultural expectations on her and willing to fulfill them, only breaking tradition to safe her father's life but suddenly she only believes in marrying for love, even when so many lives are on the line?

    • @jasonharvote4093

The idea of Shang finding out he was a prince would have worked so well here, if it meant he was part of the other kingdom. Being a princess doesn't sound too great from a more adult perspective. In more progressive societies you're prepared from birth to be a government official, and in traditional societies (what most Disney movies take place in) you are groomed to be sold or traded for diplomatic deals!
Think about it, princesses were just bargaining chips!
But little girls really want the title and status associated with it, as it comes with an awesome palace/castle and a walk-in closet filled with pretty, extravagant dresses.
This isn't even an opinion, it's an empirical fact! Disney made MILLIONS off of dress and costume sales after Frozen alone!

In all honesty, the irony for me is that the original Mulan legend did sort of feature an arranged marriage. After returning home from war, Mulan was supposed to become the Emperor's concubine. But Mulan killed herself rather than live that life.
So strangely enough, you could have done something with this plot and still make it awesome. In fact I came up with one.
Mulan and Shang get engaged. But they both get summoned to the Emperor who explains the threat about the Monguls and the need for an alliance. His proposed solution is to offer Mulan to that kingdom's ruler, not because it would unite any land, but as a status symbol for the foreign ruler. (The main reason for this is to keep to the original story's roots without betraying the original movie's Emperor respecting her enough to bow to her.) The Emperor begs Mulan to do this and maybe throws in that as a protector of her people, her honor means she must do what she can for them. Mulan and Shang of course do not stand by this, and instead offer to the Emperor the solution that they will go undercover against the Monguls, wound them before they can strike. If they can't defeat the army, Mulan must go to the Kingdom so that the alliance will hold. They gather the three men (it is an undercover mission after all, you don't want too many), go off into enemy territory, scout their fortress (base camp, stronghold, whatever) or natural bridge that the Monguls are using as a way to transport their supplies and find that if they can blow it up, they will cripple the Monguls' supplies and their supply line. We get a detailed plan of how they are going to take the base, and maybe we get a training montage of the characters preparing for the challenges, including Mulan sparring and defeating all the guys. We get a conversation the night before they attack where Mulan confesses to Shang that she cannot fail because she couldn't live a life forced to be something she's not (a callback to the original Reflection and an acknowledgement of the decision the Mulan legend made). They attack the base, in full blown camoflauge, things are going well and then they're discovered.
It's at this point that I would do one thing Disney would never do.
Disney, they manage to win the day, Mulan and Shang get married, etc. etc
    .
What I would do? I'd have Mulan is able to get past enemy lines while the men are stopped trying to hold their own against the Monguls. Mulan gets to the explosion point and readies the bomb, but the "villain comes in and the fuses are knocked out of the base. Mulan realizes there is no way out. And she thinks back to what will happen if she doesn't do this. She lights the canons, the explosives, gunpowder while she is still there, because she can't time it anymore, and the whole base blows up with Mulan still inside. Shang is devastated and returns to Mulan's home to grieve with her family. And maybe he sees her spirit out of the corner of his eye in the ancestor's temple. A beautiful woman, wearing royal armor, kneeling at the feet of the dragon guardian statue, taking her place as the true dragon guardian.
My idea still has problems, but it includes action, forces Mulan to make tough choices for the good of her people while still remaining true to herself, pays homage to the original legend, has send ups to the original movie, and actually treats Mulan with dignity.

Have them say at the beginning there're only two ways to make the other consider forming an alliance.
They have to fight their strongest warrior OR have the princesses be married.
How their strongest warrior has the high kill count.
It'll be considered more strategic to have the princess married off.
When they get there and the princess has decided they want to be with the other guys (personally I think they should go through a decision where they decide they want to be free to choose their loves and only one of them decides to form a relationship with one of the other guys.) Only then it's decided that they should fight.

I understand some people’s concern for the sequel, but I actually feel, at its core, it was very well written. If we pick apart Mulan’s character from the first film, we can see that whenever a problem gets in her way, she stops and thinks to herself, “Is there a better way?” Late on chores? Get my dog to do them for me. My father can’t fight, what do I do? I’ll take his place instead. Can’t climb and get the arrow with strength alone? Use leverage to my advantage. Only one cannon left? Defy orders and create an avalanche! Can’t ram our way through the doors? Let’s disguise ourselves and sneak inside! The emperor is now safe, but captain is unconscious, what do I do? Cut off my immediate means of escape and take on the Hun leader myself! Time and time again she weighs her options and makes her decisions because her heart/gut instincts compel her to make the “better” choice.
Li Shang on the other hand is a very dutiful guy. He is very loyal and honest, and when he’s sincere, he means it. He loves his fiancée and knows how lucky he is to have her. However, with his military upbringing, his way of thinking is, “There’s already a tried and true way of doing things. I’m going to give 100% of myself and get the job done as asked.” In short, Mulan is more spontaneous, and Li Shang is more by the book.
But what does this have to do with the sequel? Well, that’s the mind blowing part! The theme of the movie has shifted. Instead of Mulan finding who she is when faced with adversity, now she has to realize what it takes to make a relationship work. The true theme of the sequel is about Yin and Yang! Our world is full of uniqueness and (by consequence) opposites, and yet we still find ways to get along. We may not always get on well, but we can also respectfully support each other and bring out the best in each other. We can see the value each person brings to the team and appreciate them for it. And just as the ☯️ symbol depicts, two sides complete a whole as they revolve around each other and their dynamics fluctuate. And also! The dots of the opposite color mean that we are supposed to evolve and grow as we appreciate the wisdom the other person brings! And that’s exactly what happened with Mulan and Shang.
The saddest scene ever (aside from mufasa dying) brings Mulan and Shang’s personalities to the breaking point. Because Mulan loves Shang, she *isn’t* letting him go! But because Shang loves Mulan, he *is* letting go, so she can live! 😭 and after a long painful night of grief, Mulan comes to the conclusion that there is one last “better way” to complete the mission without the princesses. She shoulders Shang’s memory and is ready to complete her duty, even though her heart isn’t in it. But even better! Shang is actually alive! And he realizes that as much as he wants to protect his country, he is willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for the love of his life. There isn’t anything he would put above her. He knows what it means to “follow the duty of his heart”.
Both characters were written authentically to their personalities, and yet evolved in such a believable and organic way! The writing of their character arches is exactly like the cycle of yin and yang spiraling faster and faster as the movie progresses and they get closer and closer to reaching their relationship balance.
P.s. The only thing I dislike is that Mushu’s character had to get thrown under the bus for the plot to progress. 😏 That, and I think people miss having the awesome action sequences the war brought.

@Surya Singh While the Japanese writing system does borrow Chinese characters, they have their own 'alphabet'-type system (2, technically). Generally, if most of the characters are written with just 1 or 2 lines (like counting pen strokes), then it's probably Japanese.
Also, Japan uses English words much more often than China, mainly due to it being a mandatory second language, so that's another hint.
