- Welcome to 'EAVY CONTRAST, a series where I will try to paint miniatures
as close as possible (to the best of my ability) to the 'Eavy Metal
paint jobs using Contrast Paints and Highlights.
And in this episode I (almost) paint Yriel using the AMAZING corsair colour scheme.
*not really they didn't use Contrast Paints, but it's VERY close
Let's get cracking!

The moment that wash was applied to change the colour of the highlighting, I think my mind just expanded in ways I didn't expect. That was magical that transition.
Happy to help 😘
Wow! You have really stepped you tutorial level up! This format is so much more informative and easy to follow! Keep it up!
Thanks ☺️ I always try to make every video a bit better than the previous one.
I also bought a new lens and I think the image quality is also better.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures The zoom in on the details is crispy!
Thanks, it's all done in post production, I record in 4k so I can zoom in afterwards as the video is in 1080
A very good tip for the chunky highlights. I've struggled with getting them thick enough to show up next to the thin highlight without getting them too big. Never considered approaching it by starting thing and then fattening it up to the desired thickness.
Not my idea, I got it from Infernal Brush!
I love this one. I think it's one of the more mass model friendly tutorials you have done. Save the extreme detail stuff for characters but with one or two detail layers per color once the basic armor is done you can probably knock out squads pretty quick.
edit: I wrote the above before the video was through, but finishing the video. WOW, I think that might have been one of your top 5 over all tutorials.
Thanks, I'm quite proud of it
You always manage to push my love for minis painting in proper place 💕
I'm always more than happy to push my love in the right place 😘
Awesome job as expected! Started with the conversion/kit bash and now this, just great, well done!!!
Thanks ☺️
Wow your tutorials are so good! Really learning heaps from them. Keep it up and thanks.

Omg thank you for this, starting them this week, this dropped just on time
Happy to help
WAs waiting for this - thank you!
Happy to help 😘

Gracias guapo 😘
Beautiful! Thanks for the mix for that armour color
Happy to help 😘
Always so clean.
Thanks
For the record, the box art colour scheme is Yriel's Eldritch Raiders, so it makes sense Yriel would wear these colours
Oh I didn't knew that, now I'm even happier I went this route!
Oh I won't ☺️
Juan,
Again you amaze me with your skill. I know that I have come to your site late, but I am very happy that I have at last found you. You make me want to paint like you do. Thank you for sharing your skill with me. I've just picked up the Corsairs figures and am excited to give your style of painting a try.
Thanks
Beautiful!
Thanks
I love your Vids Juan! Thanks for you!
Thanks 😘
Great video, Juan!
Thanks mate 😘 much appreciated
Great job, thanks.
Thank YOU for watching
Thank you 🙏🏼
Happy to help 😘
Excellent video. That basilicanum grey undercoat gives a fantastic effect. I also like the little inset window where you showed glaze consistency - your video editing skills keep getting better.
Glad you noticed! I always try to make every video a little better. I'm also using a new lens for this one, I can tell the difference but not sure everyone else can.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures It's VERY crispy. Nice
Glad it shows, it wasn't cheap 😂
Face is really impressive. Great job as always!
Thanks
Thank you , Sensei Juan .

😘
Te has salido del pellejo gracias Juan por el maravilloso vídeo 😂❤🎉
Un placer!
great video!
Thanks
Mind blown thanks a lot for this. Must’ve taken a lot of time to put this together.
I was thinking Of doing my corsairs in purple.
Thanks, it did take a bit not going to lie, these videos take a lot of work and time to do but it's what I prefer doing.
Have you watched my Emperor's Children 30k video, the colours used there might be perfect for what you are looking for
I second Juan's comment about Emperor's Children purple. The Violet contrast mix he uses is a fantastic shade of purple. I used it for a Sybarite and even with some shoddy application it looks stellar.
You are a legend!!!
I KNOW!!
Always impressive
Thanks
You have incredibly steady hands. A reflection in the eye?? Come one... I stopped painting eyes. It was too much stress. 😅
Yeah I like to brag from time to time
Phenomenal work! Best tutorial for this scheme I've seen yet. Subscribing.

@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures wow! I've never had the TH-cam channel creator reply to me before! You're awesome!
I do things differently, just look at all the other comments posted!
I've got all the pieces ready and a good chunk of the models. This will make a great leader for my Iyanden Kill Team.
Awesome!!! The new Autarch is such an amazing canvas
I swear GW should hire you as Evy Metal painter with the specialisation in the Contrast Paints.
So good bro.
Trust me, they don't pay enough to hire me for that even if they wanted to, which I'm sure they don't 😂
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures keep em poor
Another amazing video of yours! You are such a talented artist and a pedagogical teacher!
Thanks, I really appreciate that
29:03 la mochilaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
I didn't think of this earlier but the armour colour would be perfect for Sons of Horus Legion.
It is indeed
Thanks a lot for the videos. Really great one.
I don't use contrast paint but it doesn't really matter in the end
Btw, does it really gives you any advantage working with Contrast paints or do you just like working with it ? Or does it just became a theme for the videos ?
No it doesn't! And I'm really glad you found it useful
Hey Juan, this is really the best tutorial for corsairs on TH-cam! By the way, what colors can be used to paint their light ocre cloaks?
I would probably start with something like Agaros Dunes or Snakebite Leather and use any light ochre or bone colour to highlight
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures thank you for your answer :D do you think the method contrast + highlights works even on a big surface like the cloak? What would you use to highlight the rear black part in a smooth way? It looks very challenging
I really like your tutorials! But I had to do something wrong, the grey contrast came out so much darker than it did with yours. Did you thin it at all?
Thank you for introducing me to ‘eavy contrast. I love doing the GW style edge highlighting, but always hated doing the two thin base coats, it took forever and it was hard to thin down the paint consistently across different colors. Getting that smooth finish with contrast paints is so clutch and makes doing the base coat much more pleasurable.
Can I ask, why not fully base coat the model before moving onto layering and highlighting?
Exactly! Basecoating is the worst.
Because I can be messy with my highlights and not have to worry, it's better for me
This looks like itd be a great scheme for heresy Era Lunar Wolves or the not metallic that some people like for Alpha Legion
Indeed!
Hey Juan great video, I'm curious, you tested the new Contrast Paints, would any of the new paint colors get you closer to the desired teal color without mixing? Kroxigor scales perhaps? I just built my Corsairs and I love that perfect greenish, blue look. Thanks.
Maybe Kroxigor but it's still different and it's also quite transparent, I would still mix the two here
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures muchas gracias voy a ponerlas a prueba
Great tutorial! What size brushes do you like to use for different techniques?
Rosemary and Co series 33 size 3, that's what I use for everything.
Another excellent tutorial as always! By the way will you add his cloak later on?
Yes, as I explain in the video it's reserved for a video on freehand next week
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Cool! Looking forward to your next video 😃
Hi. I've watched every 'Eavy video (most several times :-)). I just joined the channel. I love the contrast basecoat approach. BIG question - what sort of camera and lens do you use to get such great footage, and where is the camera? I want to video some of my painting but can't find a set-up that produces fab footage like yours.
Thanks for your support, I've used several cameras since I've started the channel but currently I'm using a Canon M50 (it's the camera I've used for longer) with a EF 24-105L lens but I've also used the EF-M 32 mm lens for a very long time.
The camera is over my left shoulder.

@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Thanks!!
hey, lovely tutorial. trying to replicate it but failing doing the right consistency of the basilicanum grey. do you thin it down or how do you do it? mine is much darker than yours…. need some help here !!
No, I don't straight from the pot to my wet palette, moist brush and apply. It's very important to take away all the extra paint while wet.
Could be that your pot is a bit stronger than mine, feel free to thin with medium
thank you master of contrast. will try again 🤪 and keep on doing such lovely videos and tutorials
Great video!
How much time did it take to paint 1 miniature as it shown in the video?
I never time myself, about a week of work
Heya Juan, since kolinsky sable still cant be shipped to the US and im planning on getting new brushes soon, do you have any recommendations on synthetic brushes from rosemary&co?
I don't use them and don't own any sorry so I can't really make a recommendation.
Maybe looking into normal sable could be a good idea, as I think that has no issues
Awesome video like always! Which miniature is this?
Slightly transformed Autarch, I have a video about the conversion
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Thank you so much!
Happy to help
Hmmm it feels like diluted terradon turquoise should achieve almost the same color. Did you add the akhelian to make it more blue and not losing saturation?
No Terradon is too green, I did that for Drazhar and the result is VERY different, Akhelian alone is too blue, the mix is just right
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures nice! Thank you for letting me know. Spectacular painting as always.
They’re making a new Pirates movie, it’s rated Arrr..

Where to get "PLACEHOLDER" ? 😲
Arrrrgh, Juan

What brand and size brush did you use for the “Sotek Green & Sybarite” edge highlight ?
Same as I use for everything else. Rosemary and Co series 33 size 3.

So you mixed corsair and autarch parts together to make a Yriel right?
Yes plus a bit more

I'm following this tutorial, but the chest part of the model is significantly darker for me. How do you get the contrast paint applied so thinly?
