I do remember around '94 and '95 that a lot of horror movies were getting lambasted or going straight to video. Many of these were sequels, and a number of them were impacted by the Weinsteins.
The fact that Scream saved horror from being largely shunted to video or cable only (not that such a thing didn't continue, of course) is an absolute win.

What I feel like the scream series also gets right is there effective use of the “plot twist”. I sometimes feel like some horror movies can get sloppy with them, and can add one that doesn’t make any sense and just complicates the whole narrative. I do feel like most films in the scream series use smart plot twist, that really another layer of depth to the plot. For example in Scream 4 (spoiler alert) to make Jill the supposed “new Sydney” in that film the killer is one of most brilliant plot twist I’ve ever seen.

Specially when out of every other killer in the series. She's the one to almost gets away with it. Like cane so close. And her dedication to succeed matched Sydney's dedication to survive.

The Real Wiseguy That was one of the things that Scream 4 got right. They made us trust a character we hadn’t even seen before all because she was related to Sidney. Plus I’m sure we didn’t expect them to have another relative as the killer like they had in Scream 3

Funny Fact: The Phone Hit in the first film was an accident. Skeet Ulrich's hand was slippery from the fake blood and he dropped the phone on Matthew. But Matthew adlibbed the rest.

For #4, not to mention Billy's last name was Loomis and in the iconic opening scene Casey's father tells his wife "drive down to the Mackenzies" before they find Casey dead...in Halloween, Laurie told Tommy and Lindsey to "go down the street to the Mackenzies" after she thought she killed Michael!

I think the running joke about there being this alternate movie universe ('Stab') running side by side with the main action is hilarious. I've never seen anything like that before in a franchise that I can think of - only thing I might have added. Nice list all the same.

What Scream does right is create killers that can die and victims that can fight back. We have enough horror where the killer doesn't die and the victims are helpless or only mildly willing to fight back. Even Laurie in Halloween is hesitant to take on Michael and only wants to cry and run away. Sid on the other hand doesn't pull any punches.
Sid: "It's not going to happen."
    Dewey:"It's okay Sid."
Sid: "Stop treating me like glass Dewey I'm not going to break."

I have a big connection to the Scream movies. I grew up with Kevin Williamson.
The Character, Cotten Weary, is based on my deceased uncle Cotten Leary. They changed one letter so the family couldn't sue, lol. And principle Hymbry , the Fonz, that was our real principles name and he would say " and remember, your principle loves you" over the entercom.

Scream has one of the best openings of all time. I love the quiz the killer gives Drew Barrymore. Name the killer in Friday the 13th? I get a lot of people on that one. In the words of the killer , If you've seen that movie a hundred times then you should know its Mrs Voorhees. Jason didn't show up until the sequel. I hope Peter L Jackson is back as the voice for part 5

Great video as always. I just
re-watched Scream 1 & 2 in the same night last Thursday. Classic flicks. I saw the first one in the theatre way back in 1996. 1 & 2 are both pretty deadly. The 3rd one is alright (I don’t dislike it like quite a few fans do).
I think part 4 is super underrated. Personally I don’t want another Scream movie, I know it’s coming and what can ya do but a Scream movie without Wes Craven just won’t feel right at all. R.I.P Wes

I like the scream franchise, cause to an extent it's really realistic (minus the super human theory and the killer coming back to life) the whole concept of someone in a mask killing people the way ghostface does is very real and I think that gets a lot of points for the franchise

So i tought maybe you could do like a 'top 10 thing you shoudn't say to a horror fan/ top 10 thing to say to make a horror fan mad. I think horror is the most underrated genre by critics (oscars) and normal people. So to see i video like i just said could be fun. I love you lee, and your videos you make my day everyday man. (I've been bingeing the rankings playlist, but I appreciate a content creator who checks on videos that have been up on TH-cam for a while!)
I think the other great thing about this franchise is you don't get all of the answers either. You can debate on who was under the mask when there is more than one killer (outside of Scream 3). Like, how messed up would it be if Casey pulled the mask off to find Stu under it, seeing as they had dated previously. There could be an argument that Billy was the one who killed her. The same goes for Tatum.
It's one of those things where you can go back and rewatch the films with a fine-tooth comb to try and get those answers or get as close to them as possible.

Scream is my favorite slasher without doubt. It helps that this film came out when I was 18, in the prime of my life, but the movie had this atmosphere that I just cant shake. The soundtrack, the characters, the setting. It's got this epic feel that's hard to describe. I remember having the posters on my room's wall. And I've begun loving this movie more and more over the years because I'm getting very nostalgic as I make my way through my 40s...

@Drumdums, the first movie had that mystery balance to it for viewers...but as you've said, this was the film that changed the direction of the Halloween franchise into H20 and eventually Resurrection....I just read recently that the original H7 was to follow Paul Rudd's Tommy Doyle into taking over the mantle as the new Dr. Loomis with him learning that the whole town of Haddonfield was working with Thorn. We could have had that instead of the PG-13 ish H20 which itself has been ignored by the recent Halloween film.

great list! i would also add the simplicity of the titles… Scream, Scream 2, Scream 3, Scream 4. and for the fifth installment calling it Scream, i believe, is in of itself a meta reference to reboots that take the same name as their originals. Or, like Halloween (2018), a requel that also brings back its legacy character.

Roger Jackson does a good job, did you know they were going to originally be watching Black Christmas (the unsung poppa) in the first draft of the script, but switched it to Halloween (Myers) for aesthetic, homage via mask and knife, verses the infamous Black Xmas calls. Halloween was basically gifted to our favor director John Carpenter as what the sequel of Black Christmas would've been, although the killer would be Billy instead of Mikey M.

THE VOICE! Reminds me of the analog recordings of theatrical trailers of the 70's & 80's;creating anticipation. Scream also has one of the best final girls ever - Neve Campbell plays Sydney with intelligence, vulnerability -yet toughness, & is just likeable 👀 candy! The opening scene of the first movie....one of the best scenes in any horror movie! The rules laid out by Randy;as horror movie fans,a construct we've always known & it's nice the film paid homage to that slasher fanbase. And lastly, unique plot twists. I just wish the 3rd & 4th installments were "better quality"....@ least that's my opinion 👉

What I love is instead of a malevolent evil force, or a resurrected monster, the "monster" in the scream franchise is a regular person, which is scarier than any monster. Ghostface can blend in and be a part of everyday life, easily gain trust, then when you least expect it he gets you. Ghostface can be real, which is much more horrifying than an immortal guy or dream invader since we know stuff like that is impossible. But ghostface has 0 special powers aside from having above average strength and stealth. ANYONE could be a Ghostface, which is what scares me the most

The opening scene of Scream with Drew Barrymore dying in the opening arguably the most shocking and most memorable opening in a horror movie nobody expected her to die early cause she was already a famous actress back at that time.

Hey man.. gonna pop over and copy this in the fb group, but few things. Scream, being my fav horror flick, I remember the first time I watched it. I was 11 and my whole family watched it - which thinking now... who does that? And my older sister had seen it in theaters, so during the watch I'm all "there's gotta be 2 killers cause how's he moving around so quickly," and to her credit she didn't give in. So I wound up doubting myself and then of course we get the reveal.
I think what's so strong about the characters are 2 fold. First, like you said... the thing with comedy inside of a serious horror flick is you can have the characters make jokes or sometimes set up humor as a kind of inconvenient happenstance but when shit goes down, it's all played serious. Second, as much as I love Randy and wish they didn't kill him in part 2 - when the characters die... they're really gone and the characters feel it. Maybe not so much in Scream 3.
Wish I could've popped into the group sooner, could've contributed to the twittttah but hey, really good vid.
Bonus: Red Right Hand. The music as a whole but Red Right Hand kills.

Thanks man, and red right hand is such a staple to the franchise. I should’ve included that one!

I never liked the Scream mask. But now seeing how it's based of The Scream painting, that's pretty cool.

First off, great video. I love the first movie, go back and forth on the second and pretty much check out there, although I watched the TV show and liked that more than 3 and 4. I think most of these work for the first movie, some for the first two movies, but across the franchise, I don’t know about that.
    10. Rules: “The rules” was a fun concept but theyre kinda bs. If you pull literally any popular slasher final girl or survivors, including Sidney, they’re in clear violation of every single rule. I think it was put in as a meta joke that wasn’t really ironed out and as a way to alleviate/cast suspicion on Randy as one of the possible killers.

    9. Cast: The cast is great, completely agreed
    8. Horror Comedy: Def agreed re: the first two about balancing the elements of horror and comedy, though I loved the original Scary Movie too.

    7. The Voice - def agreed/ the biggest strength of the property by far
    6. The Mask: I have always hated the entire outfit. Aside from being memorable, it’s horribly impractical and often puts the killer at the mercy of their victims. The shape of the face allows less than stormtrooper visibility. They often get bottles or pots and pans thrown at them. When was the last time Michael or Jason got fridge smacked and fell down? The killers cant see in the mask at all and often have to hold it and noticeably look down. I don’t know if that’s supposed to be the real-world actor doing it or it’s supposed to happen in universe. The dollar store reaper robe is to long and gets caught while they’re running resulting in slap stick tumbles and rolls, this was one of the first things Scary Movie honed in on because of how obvious it is. I was also an uncultured 11 yr old and having never heard of “The Scream” I just figured it was some weird Grim Reaper knockoff. I love the look in general, but in application and practicality, Ghostface is probably the worst costume/mask combo on the slasher market… except for the bear mascot from Girls Nite Out… yikes.
    5. Whodunit: The first one set up a great whondunit. I feel they took that premise and ran it into the ground in the second one and never let up.
    4. Pays Homage: It does, but it was so mainstream friendly, it inspired three generations of casuals who didn’t and don’t get those other references and typically don’t have any intention of going back through them. The non horror Scream fans of 1996 became the non horror Get Out fans of 2018, change my mind.

    3. Sidney: Sidney is incredible. She was my fav final girl through the 2nd movie.
    2. Saved Horror: Kinda the same as the pays homage, horror was trucking along. Scream pushed it into pretty college kid angsty meta commentary horror and we got a bunch of those, some were even great. It ran out real quick and we ended up with found footage, torture porn, and never-ending Japanese remakes until around 2008.
    1. What an Opening: Opening was great. I didn’t think Drew was gonna be the final girl/ I was already conditioned to “the girl in the opening scene doesn’t make it out of the opening scene’. I also didn’t really know Drew Barrymore was in terms of “Stardom” and I didn’t recognize she was the same girl from Poison Ivy cause I was 11.
Was lucky enough to see it in theaters. It was my 2nd or third "R-rated horror movie" in theaters and it was def a great exp.
Saw Scream 2 with my dad in a local "in the hood theater" and it made a truly memorable exp for the both of us/ was one of our best theater memories. He never really liked horror movies at all, but he always put up with me and often fell asleep on his or my couch as my sister and I had one playing.
My sister just turned 17 and she fell in love with the franchise when I showed it to her on her 11th birthday lol

I don't know if you Lee, and everyone else in the comments, knew this but there's an interesting story about the origin of Ghostface mask, a guy named Loren Gitthens wanted to make a ghoslty mask based on the classic bed sheet with holes and he made one in early 90s, he and a couple of friends at the Alterian Studios decided to produce that mask and called the company "The Ghost Factory" and tried to sell the costumes but because they were a small company they didn't sell the mask pretty well but a company called Fun World really liked the mask, after a time this man give up trying to make the living out of the special effect industry a moved on with his life and a couple of years later he saw in a store his mask still being produced by Fun World. Then we know that the production of Scream was looking for a location to shoot and in one of the houses they visited there was a ghostface mask by Fun World and then history was made, this guy Loren didn't persued money out of the popularity of Scream but he said that wanted to share the story because he felt that someone else was receiving credit for his creation.

I want 5cream to be a sequel that ignores 2-4, brings Randy back, pokes at the direct sequels, like Halloween 2018 and Texas Chainsaw 3D, and is made more serious, ominous, and creepy like a Jordan Peele type horror movie.

They found the GhostFace mask in the house that they were using for location. It belonged to the son of the owner of the house. Then, they contacted the manufacture company to see if they could use it in the movie.
