Actually in both the original as well as the 1990 remake, it was mentioned that a space probe that returned to Earth for some reason unknown exploded over the atmosphere bringing back any deceased person who wasn't buried no matter how they died, unless it was a severe head injury. In the original version, it was said that a probe from Venus exploded over Earth's atmosphere, while in the Savini remake, it was simply a probe containing radiation which had also brought back the unburied dead.
Also seriously there was a doc about the origin of how the recently dead came back--A Comet similar to Haley's Comet pass by earth in such a close range that the pours of the comet passing by fell of course to earth and made all the Dead mentioned earlier come back to life all over the world 🌎 💀 Hehehehehe that can possibly happen knowing there are unknown gases radiation and etc that are in space 😳

In the movie it was speculated that the radiation on the probe was the cause, but nothing concrete. Not only that, the disease behaves more lime a virus, being transmitted through bites.

Ill be honest, I've never really seen the film. Most of what I know about it comes from reading synopsis of it. I don't think they actually explained how the zombie apocalypse started in that movie. Im probably wrong though. Most zombie films that came after night of the living dead didn't explain how the zombie apocalypse starts. This adds a spooky element to the movie itself.
In the movie there is a radio transmition that the black guy is listening to and the news caster on the radio explains things about the zombies and says they don't know how it started.
It does add to the creepiness. Romero never explicitly explains how the "zombie apocalypse" started because it doesn't matter, because the Living Dead movies aren't about zombies, they're about people.
I've loved this movie my whole life, and this song is oddly homey. And I just sparked an idea. Rob Zombie should cover this song. Bad idea? You be the judge.
Night of the living dead used scare the shit outta me when i was younger watching this, well nothing changed much it kinda still does and having this song in the movie made it worse after watching it.
They never really explained in the remake I dont think. In the original version they suggested that the cause of the zombie apocalypse was that of a satellite that carried with it radiation.
because everyone sucks george ramero's socks, no zombie film will ever get to spread its mojo. In my opinion 1990 deserves to be in top 5 best zombie flicks ever because Tom Savini honored G.R. by following the "rules" of zombie apocalypse. 1990 is better than
