I would to love to see a $99 reel tournament. Like the shimano slx, Abu Garcia revo x, Daiwa Fuego, & Lew's Speed Spool. Love your videos man. I'm an amateur budget angler and I appreciate the hard work you put into each video. Keep up the good work.
So I've used my SLX quite a bit for jigs and Texas rigs, haven't had any issues with hard hooksets at all. Here lately I've been using it for plastic swimbaits wit 5/0 and 6/0 hooks and seem to get good penetration even wit the bigger hooks. In my opinion at 100$ this is a hard reel to beat and is probably the best reel at that price point. Thx for the content Debo, we all appreciate it!
I think your videos fill in this really important gap on youtube. It seems like so many guys are fishing from bass boats with fish finders and expensive equipment. But you're for the most part a humble bank fisher who still puts out quality videos and prooves that you can slam 'em from shore! You're also one of the few guys who do proffesional, high quality product reviews for guys like me on a budget. If it werent for this 100 dollar reel review series that you've got going on, Id be lost on where to put my money!

Awesome video Debo 👊 I love my SLX I’ve had it for close to a month now and it’s pulled it some hawgs with no problem . I was shocked at how smooth it is too with only 3 bearings it’s definitely a great lil reel . I think shimano will hook a lot of young anglers for life with the SLX bc if they can make a reel this smooth for 99 I’d love to know what the 2 or 300 dollar reels feel like.

Great review as always DeBo, I use a SLX for frogging and yes the drag is definitely not the strongest but I primarily frog fish in the pads and it’s never felt under powered to me.

In my opinion, when it comes to baitcasters, shimano and daiwa are leading. They do some awesome reels. 13 Fishing is a great company too. Abu Garcia swedish made round baitcasters work extreamly well. I would love a comparison of your baitcasters.

DEBO'S Fishing Fuego is great:)! I own a stradic ci4+ and a stradic fk hg. I would love to compare them to the fuego. The stradic fk hg is better than the ci4+ in my opinion, if you ever think about buying one of those!
By far the best $100 reel on the market! Honestly it should be about $140. It’s a $100 Curado is what it really is. Same feel and mechanics of a Curado and I love it.
I've been wanting one of these reels as I have the model this replaced and love it. But my wife bought me the lews mach crush combo to play with next summer. So I won't have one anytime soon. Especially since I've already got a bunch of other stuff as well.😁

Great video. I would like this reel more if it also had external magnetic cast control but appreciate your review. I would like to see comparisons too, not just against $100 reels but some cheaper and some more expensive with the idea of "Is the upgrade worth it?". Keep doing the great job. Tight lines.
Thanks man. That's something I should have noted. I wish they were externally adjustable centrifugal brakes like on the Lew's BB1. I don't like having to open up the reel either. However, it's easy to get into and they work so...? I like the "worth the upgrade" topic. Definitely going to do something like that this winter!
Nice review. Didn’t know that the SLX had a metal frame. That’s certainly an upgrade from the Caenen. You really can’t go wrong with a 100 budget. So many good reels at that price point. Lew’s LFS, 13 Fishing Origin C, Revo X, etc. I like everything about the Shimano SLX except the big painted SLX on the side. I know it’s purely a cosmetic thing but I can see that getting scratched up over time and looking shabby.

I own several slx reels. The felt drag washers can easily be replaced with carbon fiber discs. The first time I deep cleaned my reels I changed this. The next cleaning I'm putting the bearing kit in it it adds a pinion support bearing and a worm gear bearing.
Considering getting one of these. I’m new to baitcasters and don’t wanna spend much. After everyone telling me the abu Garcia Silvermax is a great reel for the money I got one and it started breaking in numerous ways the second time I took it fishing. I remember my dad having one of his abu Garcia rods breaking the first time he used it and the drag system failing him on one of his abu Garcia reels prematurely. At this point, I don’t wanna give any more of my money to abu Garcia.
Don't remember which youtuber mentioned it, but the longer body supposedly moves the levelwind further forward that in turn helps the line flow off the spool more smoothly.

1:01. Here's the difference between Shimano and everything else. A 4-5 year old Lews is considered old. I have four Shimano Curados and Citicas from 2003 to 2005. They all still work flawlessly. I still have them in my rotation. I don't consider any of my Shimanos old until they reach about the 12 year mark, and even then, they're just starting to get old. I also have a Lews Tournament series, and two others(think they're Speed Spool. Don't know he models that well). All of those were OK when new, but after just 5-6 years between all three, with proper care, they're just really ragged already. But even new, you can immediately feel the difference in quality between them and my Shimanos. Even the one Casitas I own will out perform any of those Lews and the two BPS Johnny Morris elite series reels I have. That Casitas was bought in 2017. Still rock solid. I fish largemouth mostly, but live on the Louisiana coast, and have caught many, many Reds on all those Shimano reels. No problem.
I have the same exact lews real for frogging except I have it on a 5’6 rod and I bet you don’t I need a longer rod but I like to have a medium light to a medium rod for frogging so I can whip it out there
got it for christmas, just got it spooled up today, first baitcaster. watched vids about how to set up tension, brakes, etc. First practice cast...birds nest. got it out. second cast, some more adjustments...giant birds nest from hell! I'm gonna keep practicing, but man...

tackle advisor has a video about this reel and i believe he has a link to carbon fiber drag washers for it, for those confident enough to take their reel apart. warning be careful not to lose the drag click pin and spring theyre very small and will launch out when taking the reel apart.

Hard for me to switch from Lews and try something else. They have never failed me and it seems I'm going to be constantly comparing all others to them. Have had them for years. Also if you ever have to deal with the company they are awesome to deal with. Can't say that about shimano.
Then don't man! If you have confidence in the gear and the company, keep with them. I have Lew's reels too and they are great! It's all about personal preference and what you have confidence in while fishing. If it ain't broke, you don't need to fix it!
I like all of my lews reels, but what really won me over was customer service. I had a drag washer fail in one, contacted them and they had a new one to me in under a week, completely free.

These are the reels i would like to see compared : Kastking speed demon pro , mega jaws , lews ( dont remember name the orange one ) , curado dc 150 ( it is over 150 dollars i know , maybe someone sends a test product ) , abu garcia revo mgx ( again not cheap maybe you already got it )

What I find interesting is how good reels have become at these lower prices. Yes, I would like it if you'd do comparison videos between this reel and others such as the $99 Lew's and even their $79.99 model; also some of the KastKing models. Great review, man. This is the reel I recently picked up for my frogging setup. It’s amazingly smooth for a $100 reel. I can’t wait for them to go on sale so I can pick another one or two up!
Pulled the trigger on one of these today thank to your review. First impression is it feels like a slightly more ergonomic Curado, but when I spin the spool, it doesn’t spin as long as my Curado. I’m thinking about disassembling it and degreasing the spool bearings to see if that’s the culprit.
I'm at a toss up between the SLX and the Lew's LFS right now. I'm leaning towards the Shimano just bc I can get it in an 8.2:1, but I love my Carbon Fire and the LFS does come in a 7.5:1 like the CF
the only problem I have had with the Shimano SLX is the side cover for the brakes is difficult to fully close. It takes some force to get it to close and to push the locking switch on the bottom. Mine opens fine but did not close as well as yours in the video. It takes some pushing hard to get it to click close and then try to push the locking switch with your finger nail.

Just picked one up on the off-season (100% compulsively, like a douche). I’m a big curado/casitas thrower...in various sizes, they’re basically all I have. The appeal of this reel, for a guy like me, is that old school shimano experience in the curado 70 size. I LOVE that 70 size. So we’ll see. Shimano’s been doing quite nicely with their $100 offerings since the caenan was introduced.
Up to this point in my journey, I’ve been fortunate enough to to get by with FB Marketplace deals, pawnshop steals, or wheelin’ and dealin’ via bartering. I’ve been thinking about the SLX line for some time now or even a dated Curado thanks to the positive review by Realistic Fishing. Mr0TRANT0 I have the reel, and tbh it can work, but it wouldn’t be the best choice for saltwater. This is because it only has like 11Lbs of drag which is whack if you’re going for larger saltwater species. But if you must, it can definitely work. I think the reel is very smooth and casts well. And I mean SMOOTH. Just make sure when you fishing saltwater to keep your reel clean and to not put it in the water
Great video. I’ve been hearin of the slx for sometime now. Not a real big advocate of centrifugal brakes only. Really like magnetic for fine tuning. So question is, lews Lfs vs. slx?? Thanks in advance
Just got rid of a curado k, loved the reel itself, but the one I had was the 6.2:1 so it was just too slow for me. If the SLX feels anything like it I might go with that. Those grips do feel good though, and love how the side plate on the curado k just unlocks and swivels like this SLX does in this vid
11 pounds of drag is beyond enough for bass fishing. most people don't know that getting the drag tight is not the max drag you can get. you can really lock that drag down so tight that you can't physically turn it anymore. it won't slip on something like a shimano baitcaster.
Yessir, I hear you there. I only say it because I have had experiences on both ends of the spectrum. A baitcaster with more than 10 LB drag slipping on hooksets when it should be locked down (so tight I thought I was going to break the star drag). My old lews speed spool only has 10 LB and has never failed. That's the only reason I bring it up just because I haven't actually tested it yet. Hello. It's been a year now, and I have a question about daiwa fuego. I'm an absolute doofoos at baitcasting. I use standard reels ( I'm European), but I would like to try my luck (again) with baitcasters.. Can the fuego hold up to a set of heavier lures? Up to 50 g? Jerkbaits, spinnerbaits, swimbaits.. spoons.. stuff pike like :)

tackle advisor has a video about this reel and i believe he has a link to carbon fiber drag washers for it, for those confident enough to take their reel apart. warning be careful not to lose the drag click pin and spring theyre very small and will launch out when taking the reel apart.

Hard for me to switch from Lews and try something else. They have never failed me and it seems I'm going to be constantly comparing all others to them. Have had them for years. Also if you ever have to deal with the company they are awesome to deal with. Can't say that about shimano.
Then don't man! If you have confidence in the gear and the company, keep with them. I have Lew's reels too and they are great! It's all about personal preference and what you have confidence in while fishing. If it ain't broke, you don't need to fix it!
I like all of my lews reels, but what really won me over was customer service. I had a drag washer fail in one, contacted them and they had a new one to me in under a week, completely free.

These are the reels i would like to see compared : Kastking speed demon pro , mega jaws , lews ( dont remember name the orange one ) , curado dc 150 ( it is over 150 dollars i know , maybe someone sends a test product ) , abu garcia revo mgx ( again not cheap maybe you already got it )

I have this reel on a 7' SLX rod only. I only use it for small finesse like shakey heads and flylining senkos.
I have now seen your appraisal of the SLX as well as a couple of others and all seem to like it as far as what it can do at it's price. What I find interesting is how good reels have become at these lower prices. Yes, I would like it if you'd do comparison videos between this reel and others such as the $99 Lew's and even their $79.99 model; also some of the KastKing models. Pulled the trigger on one of these today thank to your review. First impression is it feels like a slightly more ergonomic Curado, but when I spin the spool, it doesn’t spin as long as my Curado. I’m thinking about disassembling it and degreasing the spool bearings to see if that’s the culprit.

I'm at a toss up between the SLX and the Lew's LFS right now. I'm leaning towards the Shimano just bc I can get it in an 8.2:1, but I love my Carbon Fire and the LFS does come in a 7.5:1 like the CF

the only problem I have had with the Shimano SLX is the side cover for the brakes is difficult to fully close. It takes some force to get it to close and to push the locking switch on the bottom. Mine opens fine but did not close as well as yours in the video. It takes some pushing hard to get it to click close and then try to push the locking switch with your finger nail.

Very informative. I have a curado k. And I believe it has 11lbs drag as well I’ve never had any issues it.

Just picked one up on the off-season (100% compulsively, like a douche). I’m a big curado/casitas thrower...in various sizes, they’re basically all I have. The appeal of this reel, for a guy like me, is that old school shimano experience in the curado 70 size. I LOVE that 70 size. So we’ll see. Shimano’s been doing quite nicely with their $100 offerings since the caenan was introduced.

What you think abt me using this reel as a go between for Freshwater and saltwater?
Mr0TRANT0 I have the reel, and tbh it can work, but it wouldn’t be the best choice for saltwater. This is because it only has like 11Lbs of drag which is whack if you’re going for larger saltwater species. But if you must, it can definitely work. I think the reel is very smooth and casts well. And I mean SMOOTH. Just make sure when you fishing saltwater to keep your reel clean and to not put it in the water
I wouldn't use this for salt. I know there are better options with more of a protected coating on the reel for salt. It will tear up a reel quick!
Slx vs kastking royal legend elite. Who cares if its more expensive than the kastking still would like to see the different.

Just got rid of a curado k, loved the reel itself, but the one I had was the 6.2:1 so it was just too slow for me. If the SLX feels anything like it I might go with that. Those grips do feel good though, and love how the side plate on the curado k just unlocks and swivels like this SLX does in this vid
11 pounds of drag is beyond enough for bass fishing. most people don't know that getting the drag tight is not the max drag you can get. you can really lock that drag down so tight that you can't physically turn it anymore. it won't slip on something like a shimano baitcaster.
Yessir, I hear you there. I only say it because I have had experiences on both ends of the spectrum. A baitcaster with more than 10 LB drag slipping on hooksets when it should be locked down (so tight I thought I was going to break the star drag). My old lews speed spool only has 10 LB and has never failed. That's the only reason I bring it up just because I haven't actually tested it yet. Hello. It's been a year now, and I have a question about daiwa fuego. I'm an absolute doofoos at baitcasting. I use standard reels ( I'm European), but I would like to try my luck (again) with baitcasters.. Can the fuego hold up to a set of heavier lures? Up to 50 g? Jerkbaits, spinnerbaits, swimbaits.. spoons.. stuff pike like :)
