You certainly can create a lot of tension with that marlin spike hitch Clarice!
Thank you for another very relevant and educational video on something so many of us lack even a little knowledge on, but so important in the bush.

Thanks so much for your comment. You're absolutely right. I know knots can seem like excess info but once you have a few favourites, people find they use it all the time. C

😂 I know, start with one that is useful. My favourite go to for anything is a trucker's hitch. That way you'll have one do it all knot, and believe me, you'll use it all the time.

@@makinglure Hi there! Thanks. I use an entry level DSLR I bought years ago. Canon 70D and a 50mm lens. It's really the lens that makes the difference here. Some footage is filmed with my phone. C

Hello, I hope you are having a wonderful weekend so far. I have seen a lot of different folks talk about hanging your gear or food off the ground. Yup it all makes perfect sense. However what still throws me off is why put a sharp pointed end on one side? Part of having a fun camping experience or if you are fleeing a bad event. Is to do everything you can to prevent getting hurt or injureing yourself. It would seem the fewer things around you that could possibly harm you (like bumping into or falling against/on a very sharp pointed stick) would be a bad thing to happen. Can you explain the reason why you do sharpen one end? It also seems to me what would be better is to make the stick long enough to cut out two notches close to the end where the strap to your bag or gear can easily fit into to prevent the gear or bag from unexpectedly falling off? Just wondering, other than that thank you for another great video. Wish I knew a way to share photos with you, I am in the process of restoring/outfitting a 1985 GMC Suburban and one of my considerations is the final paint. I based my idea on watching a lot of conceal vehicles videos including yours. I think I have a pretty cool idea. At least in my own head hahaha

Hi Robert! Thanks for your comment! A Marlinspike is a traditional sailing tool used to work ropes and make ladders, it has one sharp end to help with rope work and that's where the knot comes from. However, you don't have to make it sharp, you can just use a toggle, a plain stick or any other place holder depending on what you see fit in the circumstances.
With regards to your vehicle... I know it's really tempting to paint it camo, but you're a target in an unrest situation if you're driving a camo vehicle. I'd go for a 'grey man' option like plain khaki, green or grey. If you make it look military or out of place then you'll draw too much attention. Thanks for supporting the channel, glad you've found value here. C

@@LiveReady Thanks for explaining that. I knew I had heard of a "Marlin spike" before but couldnt remember what it was used for. It was just the idea of putting a pointy end on it that concerned me. Of all the people I meet now days to many of them should NOT be running around making pointy things hahaha. I hope you are having a really productive and great week.

you don't necessarily need to use a marline spike with a marline spike hitch.. A toggle or random stick is just fine too.

    Very good clarise.
Not all rope work are knots, there are bends, hitches and splices.
Many types of marlin spike usual come with rigging set or on utility knife. Sailors knife captain currey make rhese, bosuns mate, deck handand captain all slightly different but all have a marlin spike.

So many options! I was chatting to a friend about sailing knots, I don't sail but there was an unrelated but of wisdom that came from the conversation. If you're thinking of making a reef do it. In other words, if it occurs to you that you may need to take precautions just do it. That's a whole other story though but you've brought it back to mind. Thanks for sharing your input on knots. C

Yes i agree ash a reef goes back to the days of sail in otherwords you shorten a sail by reefing it. As you can guess im former Royal Navy dont do sailing though. Surprising haw many terms from our maritime past, enter normal life.
Marlin or marlin spike, does not come from the fish, but the process of marling and parceling a rope or cable with special tools by hand.
