  • When I purchased my new 2022 Yamaha MT-09 SP in March of this year, I was so excited to finally be riding it that I overlooked that my MT-09 Fuel Economy was going to be a problem.
    The first few fill-ups were netting me roughly 80 Miles per Tank (32 Miles per Gallon). Fortunately, as I moved through the Break-In Period and had the Yamaha Recall ECU Refresh, Fuel Economy improved considerably.
    🟡 UPDATE:
    I've been riding my MT-09 SP for more than a year and recently crossed the 8,000-mile mark. If you'd like to see my long-term review of this bike, check out the link below!

    Hey, I'd just advise you to keep the bike fully upright while fueling because you'll add more gas to the tank.
    Did the same thing after someone advised it for the MT10 and it really gives more kms. 👍

    So here's my take on break-in: engine internals wear in, reducing friction, which then causes more power and better fuel economy. Also, at your 600-mile service, they replaced the factory oil with something else - and it used to be that the factory oil was a bit thicker, to help with break-in and to keep little bits of metal that wear off from flowing freely. More friction = less power and less fuel economy, at least from what I've seen.
    Also, if you went from regular dino juice to synthetic at the 600-mile service, the [usually] thinner synthetic oil has - you guessed it - less friction, so again, more power/MPGs.
    I've seen it in plenty of cars - switch early to synthetic and the full break-in can take 20k miles before power/MPG level off.
    My Harley 114, FWIW, gets 38-45 mpgs, depending on how I ride - and with a 6-gallon tank, it's 180-230 miles depending on my bladder and how low I let it get.

    • @WaltInPA
      @WaltInPA  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Before I took delivery of the MT-09, the service tech said that the factory oil looked a little darker than usual. Just to be safe, they did an oil change right away. As far as I know, they used standard drum oil for that oil change as well as my first service.

    • @RoadReality
      @RoadReality 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WaltInPA Then when you hit 5k or your next service, switch to synthetic, I bet you get a 10% bump in fuel economy and a bit more power. I'll have to look [or you can :D ] and figure out if Yamaha is using break-in oil - it might be a bit darker due to viscosity or additives for engine break-in.

    Finally a video that makes sense. Thank you so much. I have a 2021 MT09 SP and I have been averaging 115 miles since I got the bike. I had a Honda cb500F before and I could go 250+ miles on that bike. I thought my mileage was terrible but I guess it kinda makes sense.

    • @WaltInPA
      @WaltInPA  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I seem to be averaging about 120 miles before the fuel light comes on. My range isn't as good as my previous bike (Honda CB650) but I'm just glad to be getting triple digits now. It was a little concerning early on when I was only getting 80 miles between fillups.

    I'm still on the fence about buying a 3rd gen mt09. I have a 650f and the gas mileage and range are very acceptable for the level of performance. After hearing a horror story about a 1st or 2nd gen fz/mt09 getting 21mpg, I was forced to step back and reconsider buying. If the 3rd gen mt09 had the same size fuel tank as mine, I would definitely consider buying it. Like you, I don't want to constantly keep my eyes peeled for a fuel station. That takes the fun out of riding.

    • @WaltInPA
      @WaltInPA  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My only gripe with the MT-09 is I wish the fuel tank had a little more capacity. After 1,000 miles I'm getting roughly 125 miles between fillups (going from full to the fuel light coming on).
      I completely agree - I think the CB650F had a good balance between performance and range.

    Brand new, bikes always have a lower mpg, it will increase after the break in period, don't worry.
    Even on my 125cc supermoto, break in I got 80mpg, after break in (600/700 miles) l get ~120mpg.
    Same riding style, same roads, same fuel only thing changed was the bike loosened up and got into it's "natural stride"

Dealers do nothing you can’t do yourself if you have basic tools and minimum poor mechanical skills and can read. If it’s a software update, they’re required by law to do that as warranty work.

    Thought I was going to save money by getting a Tracer 9 GT over my old FZ6. Then I learned the bike takes premium gas and there goes my budget, haha. I spent the first 1000 miles with a pretty hard break in and being a bit foolish off with my throttle control off of nearly every traffic light or stop sign I encountered... now looking at my average mpg more regularly and trying to be more tame/reserved with the ham fisting. Actually seeing some decent improvement minus the ridiculous gas gauge preemptively worrying me. Hope you're enjoying the weather today!

      I'd imagine you have the same display that I do with the fuel gauge that doesn't change until you get under a half-tank. That is a bit odd and took some getting used to.
      Prices seem to be coming down a bit but Premium Gas is is shockingly expensive. Fortunately I'm only filling a couple gallons at a time.
      It's good to hear from you again. Are you still in the Philly area? We should definitely catch up at some point this riding season 👍

      @Walt In PA Yep, spot on with the first half the tank disappearing on my gauge. Just still feels strange coming from a 2006 FZ6 which had a superb gas gauge compared to my 2021 T9GT.
      Definitely agree on gas prices coming down a tad, part of getting older I suppose, I get to complain about gas prices back in my day now, lol.
      And it's while how times have changed-- has it seriously been ~15 years? Still around the Philly area but far more open to heading up North. We share the same language but when it comes to units of measurements thing get confusing between the UK and US. Your gallons are a different size to ours, we buy our petrol (not gas!) in litres but measure our consumption in mpg!
    My XSR 900 (same engine as the MT09) hits reserve at about 125 miles but I find this bike quite economical compared to my MT10. It's currently doing 34 UK mpg or 28 US mpg! It's got a 17L tank (4.5 US gallons) reserve is on at 100 miles or less. Its completely empty at 125 miles. With fuel prices here it's an expensive game at the moment.

      @@WaltInPA Strange, my 2022 MT-09 SP currently sits at 4.2 lt/100km, which is 56 MPG (US) or 67 MPG (UK). I'm at 2100km (1300 miles) and I finished the first service at my local Yamaha dealership at 1000km (600 miles). I've only filled 98 octane Shell V-Power fuel on it which has no ethanol (98 in Norway is the same as 93 in the US), and I've done a large mix of driving - city, fast and longer trips. I have to refill around every 260km (160 miles), that's when I'm at 1 bar left. When I refill then, I usually fill about 9.5-10 liters, which means I still have over 4 liters left in the tank. I could probably go 300km no problem on longer trips if I allow the tank to drain a bit more. But at 260km/160 miles, I'm long overdue to stop and have a snack and some water anyway, so. The fuel usage might be speed related as well, we have fairly lower speed limits here than in the US. So on longer trips I never hit the same speeds or revs as you do on US highways.

    I have a 2021, it has just over 3,000 miles on it now. From the beginning I have gotten 50-51 MPG. The big bar goes away between 95-100 miles after a fill up and the fuel light comes on at about 150 miles. I think the entire tank is 3.7 gallons including the reserve. I agree the small tank is one of the very few things I would change on this bike. The Tracer 9 gets another gallon.

    I find I get the best mileage when I can buy pure gas no ethanol. Don't know why they want to make it. If you burn more gas to go the same distance how is that making less pollution? I also would expect mileage to improve as an engine gets "broke in". New engines are tight and parts have lots of resistance to overcome when moving. then they loosen up a bit with use so the parts will move easier.

    The obvious question...Is this mileage just putting around and commuting ..or is this riding as advertised to be ridden? Just regular commuting, with some backroad sprints, i get 50-53mpg on an old school carb'd 650. Something's off. I could tune the carb for even better mpgs..but i like the power where it's at.

    Just did my first fill on my mt-09 and got 100 miles from 2.1 gallons, the light comes on pretty early all assuming the tank was actually "full" from the dealer

      I think it only requires 91 based on the owners manual but I use 93 whenever it is available.

    Looks like we’re all going to be converting our motorcycles to electric power.

      I think an electric motorcycle would be awesome as a second bike (their range is my only real concern) but wow are they expensive.
