  • Degenerative Disc Disease is silent until the later phases. This leads to chronic pain, disc herniation, and pinched nerves. Poor posture is the number one condition that leads to this chronic problem.

Discs can regenerate. I used to think that they couldn't until I took updated xrays on my wellness chiro patients. Most didn't but a few did double in size. They were all 65 yrs old or older. When looking further into this what the deciding factor was that these patients actually exercised regularly, ate a clean diet and were grateful people. We are design for self healing and self regulation. Unfortunately for most people our life choices limits the healing potential. Hopefully this can help motivate the many. Good luck!

the tire analogy doesn't hold because it's not a living tissue. even bone can heal and grow stronger. I wasn't born with discs the size they are now, they grew. I'm skeptical, I think we'll find out this stuff can heal if you create the right conditions for it to do so.

I've been diagnosed with severe degeneration from the neck to midway down the spine, all due to falling down the stairs during a seizure in Jan 18. I'm in a great deal of pain but have to see a consultant and have MRI. I have to remain hopeful at this stage. Bless you Dr Mandell for a great explanation of the problem.

Hi Dr Mandell thank you for this very informative video. I am a 66 year old male and been very fit until August 2022. I used to be a long distance rider, worked out at the gym but in the last 10 years I was hit by negligent drivers that hit me in the bike lane. Therefore massive whiplash, fractures, etc. I recovered each time and kept riding until August 2022. I noticed that I had a very nasty neck pain in the left of my neck, which has got worse of the next few months. I did stop riding all together because it was causing me a lot of inflammation. Now I have issues in the upper part of my thoracic spine, down the right of L2/L3/L3/L4. I have seen a neurosurgeon who recommended no surgery and I was put of pain medication plus some cortisone injections. My neck pain has increased so badly that I can't sleep without tablets. Now I also feeling referred shoulder pain, arms, hands and fingers. Also burning pain, numbness travelling to my lower back, groin, legs and feet. When I sit I feel tightening of my groin and feet. My right calf also hurts. To make thing worse I get headaches, light headed, right side tinnitus. This causes depression, anxiety, high blood pressure because I can't get no relief. It is 24/7, I can't sleep unless I take opioids and nerve pain meds. I have tried physiotherapy, osteopathy, acupuncture and I am not improving. I can't drive the car due to pain when sitting.
What can I do naturally for my neck and spine? Thank you in advance. Best regards. Alfred

Hi doc! Thank you for the information.
I would like though to disagree with you on impossibility of regeneration (of any tissue in our body really, not only discs, and those deposits of calcium on vertebras etc.): maybe, indeed, there is no much of blood vessels bringing nutritions to discs, but *still* they *get* nourished *somehow*, they are living tissue and they would have been dead things if they didn't get nutrition, and there is nothing dead in our body, as far as I know. If we were to take the stress off a disc (fix spinal structure) it would inevitably regenerate.
I don't know (yet) wether you do or don't discuss dietary importance on this channel, but that aspect is quite important for our body's health.
    Great videos, thanks!

Let's be clear on what we are communicating about. In reference to tissues in the body healing and making changes, it is possible for all. In reference to thinning and degeneration of the disc structure, it is not possible to reverse in height and continuity.

@@motivationaldoc This has been proven outright WRONG in newer scientific studies such as "Degenerative Disc Disease Reversal: Rethinking Human Physiology" from 2021 by Dieter Matthias Meier. To quote from the study: "This resulted in the growth of the degenerated disc, which increased the lateral angle between L5 and S1 by 80% coinciding with freedom of pain, free range of motion and an improvement of autonomic balance. This was documented by full spine X-rays and a pre- and
post-scan of the autonomic nervous system. Conclusion: This study shows that growth of intervertebral disc tissue is possible without the use of medication, surgery or cell transplantation and should be the beginning of rethinking functional physiology and the importance of translational medicine"

I don't want to depreciate Doctor Mandel and his huge knowledge and great experience but he is not a God and also he isn't expert of spiritual healing and "mind over matter" philosophy which explains miraculous healings when medicine cannot help. I only want to say that quantum phisisicists becoming to a point when they must agree with mysticism and all teachings of spiritual great masters who were always teaching that everything is possible when you believe. If you believe in something, it happens exactly what you've expected. Quantum physicists also know that today and understand that all is energy which changes all the time. As far as I understand, discs can and do actually rehydrate. This is why you’re the slightest bit taller when you first wake up, since the discs have rehydrated a bit while you were sleeping in bed. Therefore what I would suggest is to stretch out that spine while in bed just before you go to sleep at night.

Guess what I am on day 9 of no catheterizing!! Turns out that the spinal cord being compressed on the nerves caused my retention. I've also heard that regular inversion on an inversion table helps a lot though they can be expensive. I think regular stretching is useful, physical therapy and/or chiropractic. I plan to change doctors to an osteopathic physician and they do spinal manipulations--doctors of osteopathy, DOs, have a more holistic viewpoint which I like.

DDD starts as early as 16 yrs of age. I don't think they regenerate cause I have not had full motion L to R neck movement now for 2 yrs. I've gone to physio, massage and now trying chiro. I'm doing the hang the neck over a bench with a round soft support under my neck, I'm also doing neck tractions laying down with a homemade device and am also turning my neck L and R to max and holding for 20 sec. I also tilt and hold my neck on both sides for 20 sec each. The hang over neck and traction are both done for 5 min each. I drink 8 or more glasses of water/day. I have Mild to Mod narrowing at C3-C4, C4-C5, C5-C6, C6-C7 and mild to mod changes likely C7-T1 but not ideally visualized.

    My MRI Report says
*Disc dessicatory changes observed in L4-L5 disc level
*Mild Broad based posterior disc protrusion of L4-L5 disc causing mild compression of thecal sac anteriorly and encroachment on both lateral recesses more marked on left side
*Mild facet joint arthropathy also observed at L‘3-4 and L4-5 level
However, my NCS tests are normal.
    Physical symptoms :-
    * No pain while sitting and lying.
    * Can stand for two hour but walking more than 800 ms causes acute pain in left lower back which doesn't go down the leg.

Daren, I'm late to respond to this UT video. I personally have done years of research looking at this and many, many other videos and consulations with doctors, Chiros, etc. Vertebrea Discs do NOT regenerate. Once the OA starts ( as in my case with Spondyloitis , DDD, facet Joint arthritis, and more), it's the arthritic bone spur growth that destroys your well being. There is much one can try - beleive me, I try every supplement known to mankind, nothing allows the body to regenerate Discs. The Body does heal Itself (that's all over the Internet), but not vertebrea Discs. Is it a strange Wonder that we can send rockets to Mars, land a robotic vehicle and Control it from Earth.....yet, medical science has not come up with this answer to what plagues the 50+ year olds : Arthritis / Inflammation / DDD, all of which contribute to the Baby Boomer Misery Index. Chronic Pain = Chronic Anxiety = Chronic Msiery. I have come to realize that Your Spinal Health is EVERYTHING!! Stenosis, Scoliosis, DDD, Disc Bulges /herniations, poor Posture, all of these conditions over the long haul affect the Central Nervous System and the Peripheral Nervous System!! Look ino the Vagus Nerve - the largest Cranial nerve in the body. It Affects most of the crucial organs in the body (heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, etc.). This doctor and many others on the Interweb give you much info on it.

Electromagnetic based therapies are the key solution, especially at low frequency: they regenerate cartilage, nerves, and other tissues, by re-establishing the ionic intra-extra cellular exchange in damaged cells, thereby inducing an antinfiammatory effect. Cells start to work again.and to reproduce themselves…

Dr Mandel's knowledge is huge but has basics in many books and publications while he was studying medicine and all cases of patients in his career who also believe what doctor says as a truth.
If you believe in health you will be healthy, if you believe that doctors know better you will be never healthy!

I agree with everything being said except for the non existent regenerative process. Most doctors do not get training on nutrition. Proper nutrition heals the body. Why not the disks? I have a herniated L5 disk. My sciatica barely ever shows up now after only 7 months of self treatment through nutrition. No prescription pills or injections of any kind. Now I can dance for as long as I want pain free and wear a backpack with some weight in it again, even jogging with it. Couldn't even run at all for a yr. I could barely walk when I got this...

    • @StinkyFlyfart

Healthy eating means healthy lifestyle including light exercise for the problematic area but the most important part when it comes to food to help the damaged part out is drinking nothing but water, and I mean NOTHING but water, taking 1000-1500mg of vitamin C a day, can be obtained through acidic fruits too, taking pure 8.5g of collagen a day and taking different herbs and vegetables that help against inflammation. There are many, I won't list them. Look them up.

I go to the ER for numbness, tingling, and pain in my arms and hands. No neck pain. Doctor comes in and refers me to a neurologist because I probably need surgery lol.

It saddens me to know that there is no cure. my doctor said I have a degenerative disc in my neck. Because of this I feel my arm pain 24.hours a day that it wakes me up every midnight when the medicine effect wears off🥺. Does it mean I'm gonna be suffering for this pain 24 hours a day for the rest of my life?

First start moving, walking, hidrating, ( drink more than just to satisfy your thirst), start eating best nutritional food,( salads, kale, broccoli, onions, beans, nuts, seeds, fruits), stop sugar, deserts, white bread, etc, stop eating meat, cheese, eggs, etc.
After prepare for some fasting: stop eating breakfast forever; after 1-2 weeks, eat afer 18- 20 hours from meal to meal: ex eat at 18:00 and next meal after 18-20 hours next day; after 1 week eat one meal a day: at 18:00 and next day from 17:00-18:00, for a week; after that start fasting for a 48 hr; after for 3 days, after for a week. Go back to one meal a day for a week. Start fasting for 3 weeks.
Go back for one meal a day for a week.
      Fast for 3 weeks.
After that you start healing, continue to walk every day and start exercising Ci Gong for spine lower back and neck.
The explanation goes to fasting, when the body goes into a surviving mode and start scanning the whole body and repairs where is a problem.
Good Lock, I tell you from my own experience, I had from nowhere DDD on L5-S1 with severe spinal stenosis, bulge on L3, L4 and T1; Doctors have no solutions ather that fusion surgery, that is a disaster.

when somebody decide to do fasting, don't warry you will feel hunger just on time of the meal that you don't take and just a mild hunger on the next missing meal, after that you can fast without feeling any hunger for many days of not eating at all, because your body is not living based on calories, but consuming your body fat.
In this mode, the body maintain a steady low level of blood sugar, so not a suddenly spike of insulins, that cause the sensation of hunger.

Dude...I am hearing that movement and collagen and glucosamine can absolutely regen cartilage! Not to mention stem cell treatments! Isn't that the news from clinical trials? If the industry thinking on this is shifting, you should revise this video, ASAP PLEASE!

In brief to what I understood here, is there is no hope at all for getting better even though the discs are alive hence any changes are possible compared to the dead tire whereby it has no expectation to improve 🤔

Stop texting and using your iPad in bed if your doing so. Start doing neck tractions with a towel (see on youtube) and do the neck rear hang over a bed or bench with a rolled up sponge or towel to regain the neck curve.
