    Wow. This is so cool. Thanks for sharing. I am a wedding photographer with destination clients mostly. I am based in N Macedonia, we have a large diaspora that comes home for weddings and usually one of the spouses is foreign. And sometimes that spouse (bride or groom) is from the UK. All I can say is that working with people from England/UK has always been a delight. Very well mannered during the day and absolute beasts when it comes to partying later during the reception.

    • @roo_films

      @@roo_films Really nice job. I noticed a lot more, if not almost all are more stationary shots too, not as much motion involved in the shot itself but more relying on the movement within the frame of just the things happening. I'll definitely have to try this stripped down approach for my next one to change it up.

  • @martindemanable

    What a great insight man! Thanks for sharing and mad respect for your choice to do this solo. I know from experience how hard that can be.
    You mentioned filming in the standard profile. Do you relay on auto whit balance? Any custom adjustments to the profile? And how much work goes into color grading to get the final look? It looks awesome

    • @roo_films

      Thanks Martin, no I don't do any tweaks to the profile. I do a mixture of auto and manual white balance. Recently I have much preferred shooting manual because I like my footage to feel quite warm, in the 6200K area. For the grade I use FilmConvert and one of their preset LUTs set to 70%. There's not much flexibility to tweak the footage so its a very simple process. Just have to make sure I get it right in camera.

    Great BTS very informative, I only started my videography journey June 2023 so videos like this are a godsend for picking up tips! Quick question, do you prefer hand held filming over gimball, and if so what's your reasons? I've been very tempted to resort back to handheld filming. Thanks!

    • @roo_films

      Yes much prefer handheld. If you look at my films there is very little movement. I like to keep my gear as minimal as possible and I’d be worried I’d be missing moments whilst trying to set up a gimbal.

  • @rdstudios-production

    what do you fancy as far as focus modes and stabilization on your A7SIII? Great work by the way

    • @roo_films

      Hey, for stabilisation I have the Active Stabilisation turned on, this changed the game for me in terms of being able to get stable shots handheld. There's a slight crop when using this mode but it's 100% worth it.
      Focus mode I'm in autofocus for the majority of the day, I use the medium sized focus point and use the thumb stick to move it to where I want. I also have it set so if I hold the thumbstick in it switches to manual focus for as long as it's held down, handy for when I'm locked on to something and people are walking past in the foreground.
      My B & C Cams are usually locked off on manual focus

    Thank you for this wonderful video Roo. I shoot weddings and watching your handheld technique was enlightening. I generally use a gimbal.
    Question about audio. You said that you usually stick a Sony TX660 into the pocket of speakers. In US weddings the Maid of Honor often gives a speech. What do you do for audio when the speaker is a woman wearing a dress?

    • @roo_films

      Thank so much for the kind words. Yes so for female speakers I still clip the TX650 to their dress either on the arm strap or on the front just above the breast. I speak to them beforehand and ask them where they would be most comfortable with it going then I get them to put it on themselves so I'm not messing about with their dress. Usually though it's the TX650 strapped to the venue microphone that has the best audio, but this was one of those rare occasions where they didn't want to use a mic.

    • @justesmond

      @@roo_films thank you for the explanation. Outstanding work. You’ve inspired me to try to shoot more of the day handheld. For follow shots in front or behind the bride when she enters, I’m still more comfortable using the gimbal. But you have shown me that it is possible to get great results going handheld, especially with three points of contact, shooting as a still, Photographer. Honestly, I shoot on the Panasonic S5ii, which has outstanding stabilization. I really shouldn’t be scared to shoot handheld outside of technique. Lol.

    21:51 - On your B and C cameras for the ceremony...
    Do you have them in manual focus?
    Mainly curious about the B-cam at the back and how/when you would choose the focus point if the groom is not yet in place.

    • @roo_films

      Yes I have them on manual focus, I usually ask the photographer to stand in the position I expect the groom to be so I can lock focus. I set it to f4 so I have a bit of leeway

  • @darinamiro120

    Great! Only one thing I was thinking about is, how reacts the photographer to your tripods during the ceremony and when you place them in the hall in the evening? They are in view all the time anyway and probably doesn't come out as nicely for the photos (photographer? ://). How do you handle with if the photographer speaks to you about it? Thanks in advance.

    • @roo_films

      I always speak to the photographer about my camera placement and make sure they're happy with it. I think most photographers realise that the speeches are a much bigger deal for video than photo though, so I've never had any complaints

    thanks either way - great work on this and the wedding vid itself

    • @roo_films

      Hey, yes it was a TX650. Usually I have one attached to the venue mic as well and that is usually the sound source I use, and the on jacket one is just a backup. But for this wedding they decided against using the mic. If there is no pocket I'll attach it inbetween their shirt buttons or high up on their waistcoat near their breast
