Life is not fair & I won't get used to it: Telemann, a modest talent, wrote over 800 pieces. Schumann, a genius, died at age 46 and finished only 4 symphonies and 3/4 of a 5th--this piece. I can listen to Schumann--anything by him--over & over again. Simply beautiful & brilliant. Lovely performance, of course. Yes, a very cold audience.
This is just pure Schumann gold, I love every minute of this amazing triptych. It is so extremely original and seems so oddly spontaneous. I love also how he creates these wonderful suspensions over major sevenths and nineths (like Mendelssohn also quite usually does) that sound so wonderfully mellow after moments of highest dramatic intensity. What Schumann was really great at is his capability of putting all the musical machinery to use for a direct translation of his somewhat erratic psychological affects. If he wouldn't have been a man of such thorough humanistic education, such a translation would have probably been impossible, he knew exactly what buttons he had to push at the very perfect timings. His music is somewhat the perfect match of absolute chaos and strict order in an evenly distribution, at every moment and aspect in a piece, and this piece is somewhat like a perfect storm. Although there are many many others.
If Schumann had added a slow movement to this substantial work, it could have become another fine symphony. I've always enjoyed it tremendously, especially the delicate "Scherzo" and the festive "Finale" with its imposing opening chords. Jarvi's spirited conducting and the orchestra's performance make the music blossom.
ronald b woodall Well, I agree with all of that. In the UK it gets programmed about as often as the 2nd Symphony, that is to say very, very rarely. Because of its cumbersome title probably. If so it's a crying shame he didn't add another movement.
Iggy Reilly Cold audience? This was the curtain-raiser to Beethoven's Triple Concerto with an all-star international trio of soloists and after the interval the orchestra played Shostakovich's 1st Symphony. Now you know how things are: the audience are saving their yells, their standing ovations and their USA-style whoops for the end of the concert. Maybe like me you prefer the Schumann to the Beethoven and the Shostakovich. But in those circumstances it's unlikely that a rarely performed work by Schumann is going to have the audience rocking in the aisles. And really... does it bother you if the audience doesn't give them wild applause after what is, I repeat, the curtain raiser?
If this were considered a mini-symphony without a slow movement, it is much better than his 1st and 5rd and on a par with the 2nd and 4th. Scherzo better than syms. 1,2,3.
What an exciting piece of music this is. I wish that I had been there in person! Paavo Jarvi and orchestra are superb.
Schumann. Such a wonderful composer!
What marvels would he have composed without the many traumas in his life and with another thirty years to live.
And yet a crazy composer, as a 1st violin player that‘s not fair😀

But he wrote a ton of piano music--far more than Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, or Brahms.
A bit unfair to Telemann. Surely you can recognise his extraordinary talent - his counterpoint the the canonic sonatas for example.

Yes,exactly..
They are soooo delicious.
absolutly perfekt with järvi, attended concert,
The camera shake due to the bass vibrations at 6:07 is quite funny.
Such a beautiful work. The Scherzo in particular is exquisite.

Yes, he should have!
I remember Pierre Boulez and the BBC symphony orchestra playing this in the 1970's. Lovely.
This a wonderful piece of music, and a fine performance. I play it over and over again.
Beautiful performance of a beautiful piece! Bravo!👌
This is really a symphony. It doesn't need a slow movement....
My favorite scherzos by Schumann are from his first and fourth symphonies.
I. Ouvertüre. Andante con moto - Allegro ∙ 00:30
II. Scherzo. Vivo - Trio - Scherzo ∙ 06:56
III. Finale. Allegro molto vivace 11:18∙
This is so different from anything else of Schumann's I've heard. If I didn't know better, I would swear it was by Mendelssohn. A wonderful piece.
This is a hidden masterpiece beautifully performed.

brilliant work, too little known and superbly played!
Obrigado amigos e amigas musicistas!
13:53 is nice I love the bass
Just had this lovely tune in my head and had to drop by for a little fix.
Great ltttle piece like a symphony without a slow mvt.
Why didn't Schumann name this piece "symphony without slow movement"?
Schumann Unfinished Symphony
Bravo!
+Paul Wu ... mein Echo: Bravo!
11:19 is the finale
Exciting performance, cold audience.

The "cold audience" is thankfully warmed up by the hot flautist 😁
Beautifull.
But the camera makes me nervous.

you can't learn to appreciate his spring Symphony especially the final movement. either you get it or you don't. keep trying.
+trisymphony In meinem Kommentar meint "objektive Leistung" fast "Leistung ohne überflüssige Leidenschaft".

isn't the video title incorrect?
