I loved this interview! She is such a great ambassador for plant based living. I have been using a plant based diet to help me live well with my MS and she is so,right, what we fuel our bodies with matters. Like her, I order the sides at restaurants and people are often jealous of my meals.
As a momma to a strong willed vegetarian 4year old, I would LOVE to hear from her parents. I applaud how they embraced her identity and helped nurture it. Imagine if more parents were like that rather than stifle the flame. What an amazing interview.
I agree. But don't be naive about veganism. The abuse in the dairy industry is often even worse. Plus, now is the time to introduce your child to vegan cheese eggs etc and they won't even think they're weird as they get older. Also, if you really care about it, it's important you also become vegan and set a great example. Nothing hurts my relationship with my parents more then watching them pay for animal abuse with little compassion for the suffering they cause. I feel we'd be so much closer if this wasn't the case and they actually lived up to the values they taught me about being a nice person
@@MattAngiono i'm a Plant Based vegan, her dad isn't on board however, but shes not with him often. She eats non dairy butter and cheese with me and likes it.
@MattAngiono I'm 57 and vegan 5 years. I agree, it's so hard when I eat with my Mother and Sister. They both eat animals and don't understand why I stopped. I tried to be veggie as a child and remember my Mother lying to me about the origin of my food, for example saying venison not actually being deer and ox tongue not actually being an ox tongue.
@lynnritchie231 I generally like to refer to "becoming" vegan rather than "going" because it's not just something we do. It's an entire change in the very heart of our being. Life looks very different after this shift, and things seem much more aligned to the earth (though much less aligned when you look at the state of the world and everyone else). Family is difficult because we have a hard time separating the violence from the people we know to be loving and caring. It makes no sense, other than knowing I was once that way. Which is also why it's so frustrating. We know change is possible and even easy. I can't believe your parents would lie about it though... that is a whole other level of dissonance. Cheers
I listened to this in the audio version first and thought what a humble intelligent and strong woman Tanya is! Now I check the video and see she is also drop dead gorgeous! Beautiful inside out! So reassuring to know there are people like her in this world. THANK YOU, Tanya and THANK YOU, Rich! ❤
Rich, regarding musicians that are super healthy, if you don’t know them, you really should check out Rise Against and try getting at least Tim (their vocalist) on the pod. The whole band is vegetarian or vegan, and 3/4 of them are straight edge.
I am a long-time fan of Bruce Dickinson and became interested in Tanya because of him. She's an amazing musician. I am not a vegan but have heard plenty of interesting things about veganism. What an amazing woman, Tanya is! I came away a fan more than musically after watching this. Tanya, you go, girl. You are special, and I applaud all of your musical as well as non-musical projects!
Thanks for this thoughtful and expansive conversation. I am in the same camp as Tanya with regards the negative impact extremism can have, in general. As ethical vegans it is hard for us to maintain a moderate approach, turning people off by being sententious is not effective in my experience. Leading by example is better. Also, Tanya and Derrick's Highway to Health is well worth a watch. Especially their trip to Tanya's hometown in Ireland. Very amusing.
Never heard of her but what an inspiring person. This is the joy of Rich Roll podcasts - try them out, even if you've no idea who the guest is or what they're going to talk about because you'll be better educated afterwards.
Thank you Rich for bringing Tanya to your platform. I've followed her for a while now and just love her enthusiasm and down to earthness. The Highway to Health episodes on TH-cam are awesome and I truly wish her well on the documentary to come. From a fan of Whitesnake/Maiden/Sepultura it's great to see more veganism in hard rock & metal. Love your accent too Tanya :) Great episode.
Amazing woman, love when you invite us to a positive view, positive way to carry the message, is a nice gentle invitation to change your view of the world instead of an imposition. Love it all my admiration from Chile
Hi Rich, thank you for being the podcaster that continues to make most of your content where your guest are vegans. Please do keep this vegan guest trend going Rich. Thank you so much.
As a fellow animal lover and bass player, I enjoyed learning more about Tanya! 👏🏼 I questioned eating animals at 6, sadly I was told animals only "exist" and that they don't think or feel. We have come so far, but have so much farther to go✌🏼💚🌱
She's a tour de Force..damn. I had seen a couple of interviews with her, these past couple if years...but..off course..noone does it like Rich. Thanks very much, for this. I leave inspired, yet again. 😊 Kudos from Portugal
Great interview! There are a lot of plant-based and vegan people in the metalcore/punk rock scene, it would be cool to see some of them on the podcast as well!
Normally I don't care to watch celebrities, but if they are vegan and discuss that, I'll watch them any day of the week. Also if they are b@d@ss musicians, that helps!

What a beautiful goddess!!! 😍 such a fascinating woman! Omg I have a crazy similar childhood experience with raising a calf, mine was named Cornelius 😬 I raised him and then came home from school one day, he was gone, and found out he got sold to the butcher! ☹️ traumatized me for so long! 😢 anyway this chicks awesome! Such a good episode!! 👏 thanks for having her on Rich! 🫶🏼
Sadly extreme vegan activism have created a negative image..saying that Tanya brings about a non aggressive approach with a passive intelligent attitude..an attitude that threads thru her life knowing intuitively how her life has brought about challenges that has brought her to where she is now..sitting in this studio talking about stuff that matters..thankyou both..ps..I am mainly plant based and love it..🌿🦋🌿
The thing about veganism, is it's "extreme" to anyone who doesn't practice it. No one would say not abusing children is extreme or that it's extreme to use the legal system to prevent it. But with animals, it's different. The people who oppose the abuse get labeled extreme while the billions of people participating in the abuse are "normal" But veganism really is an all or nothing kind of thing. Going back afterwards is essentially saying you're fine with animal abuse if it makes you feel good. I agree that the "extreme" forms of activism like using blood or screaming in a restaurant aren't productive or useful, but I do understand it. Compared to the suffering we are inflicting, it's really a minor inconvenience. I'd say there are better strategies, but at least those people are trying. None of us know what else to do that will actually work anyway
This is great, but when she tells people they are "already vegan but also eat meat and cheese," that's just wrong. Vegan isn't a diet, it's an ethical philosophy. Even if you only ate plants but didn't care about the animals and the ethics that wouldn't technically be vegan. I'm not saying she's wrong for trying it to get people to become closer to vegan, but it just isn't right about what it means to be vegan. Being plant based isn't the same as vegan. I'm also not saying that virtue signaling about veganism is what it's about. But it is important for people interested in stopping animal abuse to have a specific term to refer to ourselves, hence the word vegan. If anything, I'd say she'd be correct for pointing out that people are "already vegan" because they oppose kicking your dog or any other animal abuse, but just haven't applied it to their own consumer choices. Almost everyone opposes animal abuse but just doesn't want to admit they support it with their everyday spending choices. But recognition is often the first step to real change. It was for me. I heard that Bruce lost hundreds of millions with his airline companies, so he must be on tours non-stop, he doesn't travel by plane at all on these solo tours, and probably this new wife is not very cheap to maintain, his son works as a road crew on this solo tour of his, which is a little strange if his father has already earned hundreds of millions during his career, the hardships of the ultra-rich are hard, it's easy for us ordinary plebs.. if Bruce happens to see this, I'd like to tell him to be a little nicer to the fans like, for example, Steve, they spend months on their salaries and spend precious days off to travel and watch concerts, so the next time you're passing by, stop for at least a few seconds, the crown won't fall off your head...
