  • "Unbroken Chain" from the album Mars Hotel stands out as a cornerstone in the Grateful Dead's repertoire, a song of significant complexity both musically and lyrically. Written by Bobby Petersen with music by Phil Lesh, its debut in live performance at the Spectrum in Philadelphia on March 19, 1995, after years of anticipation, triggered an uproar of excitement from the audience, marking a unique moment in the band's history.
It was only played live for a short time unfortunately. Throughout their final tour, it remained a cherished part of their live sets, culminating in a memorable rendition as the penultimate song at their last show on July 9, seamlessly transitioning from "Drums" into "Sugar Magnolia," with a total of ONLY TEN live performances!!
Yet, it's the studio version on "Mars Hotel" that never fails to captivate. From its enigmatic studio effects reminiscent of jet planes or dripping water to Jerry Garcia's mesmerizing solo, the song's rapid shifts in mood, tempo, and structure take listeners on a thrilling journey. Bobby Petersen's lyrics, evocative and poignant, rival some of Robert Hunter's finest work.
The title "Unbroken Chain" has been adopted by various entities and events over the years, embodying something quintessentially Dead. From a long-standing fanzine to the Phil Lesh charitable foundation and even a conference at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, the phrase resonates deeply with Deadheads.
In my analysis in the lyrics, I delve into the concept of the "unbroken chain," primarily as a theological idea linked to the transmission of authority. In Petersen's lyric, it symbolizes the interconnectedness of humanity and nature, weaving together images of sorrow, pearls, sky, sea, and the western wind. Each image builds upon the next, creating a rich tapestry of meaning. Ultimately, "Unbroken Chain" encourages listeners to find their own meaning in the world around them, drawing from experiences of loss, sorrow, nature, and human connection.

I like what you're trying to do here. Putting together Trippy psychedelic videos to go along with the Grateful Dead's music. Giving us some "Eye Candy" while we are high as fuk is definitely a worthy cause my friend. Keep on Trucking!!!

Jam you absolutely nailed it. How you made it look like everything in the Universe
is connected beautiful, especially when Phil sings.."They're telling me forgiveness is
the key to every door" Wow. Thanks so much for this one. Jerry is looking down and
    smiling at you.

One of the Grateful Dead’s most beautiful songs. Hunter wrote the lyrics for Phil when his father passed away. Phil wrote the music and they played it intermittently until 1973, when they shelved it.
I was so lucky to be in Hampton on 3/20/86 when the band busted it out again after 13 years! What a moment. They sure loved bustouts in Hampton. That was their East Coast Fillmore. Maybe Madison Square Garden but I think of it is Hampton. Have a great day. Everybody be kind to one another.
Oh, my. The art/animation. WELL DONE!! I’m glad you didn’t add skeletons to this. It’s perfect. Whooo!!

i'm not sure what it meant. but when i started doing dmt, consistently during the experience my dmt joint would turn into a chain structure. it was absolutely mesmerizing. but i always think about that, and i believe it had to do with a woman i was with at the time, because it felt like she had me in chains
