  • Driving the Porsche 911 GT3, Aston Martin V12 Vantage S, and Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series is a special occasion indeed. Which is best for the track and on the road, and which one would you have?

    These old videos are still Harris’s best work. Driving the cars was the centerpiece, rather than trying to make sense of modern fast cars.

    Even though the Aston is the best looking, id take the GT3 in a heartbeat. Everything about it makes me lust after it soo much. Who could deny a 9000rpm free revving monster!!

      Ehhh, I think you’ve got it twisted.. Porsche = Track, AMG - Weekend warrior, Aston - Elegant daily.. Even the filthy rich understand low volume. There’s not too many people who’d daily a Black Series.. The ride would send you to the chiropractor twice a week 🌚

    Gotta say, I've never been the biggest Porche fan because of the looks, but CH is doing a damn good job of selling it. That engine noise is just orgasmic and I love the burbling on the overrun. Superb!

      He sold me on them a year or two ago. I wasn't the biggest fan until I saw him giggling like a school girl in his gt3. After that I really needed to give them a real close look. Now I am a big fan. Now if only I could get the lottery to fall my way.

    Its staggering that the 911 GT3 is the cheapest here, while being the best, in probably every way, by a probably very large margin.

    • @givemeajackson
      @givemeajackson 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      on a track, undoubtedly. but astons aren't track cars. the vantage is more practical, more comfortable, more prestigious... all in all, on a track, the gt3 is it without a question, but in everyday use, the aston has the edge imo.

    • @cyrusshredz1159
      @cyrusshredz1159 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      As a daily driver road car the GT3 is probably the worst of the 3. The Merc is arguably the best, being the most refined, the steel brakes being better when cold under slow driving conditions, and the Aston is just as refined. The GT3 might be a bit too aggressive for that sort of thing. A better rival for the aston and merc would be the porsche turbo, which is also a better car.

    • @El_Chompo
      @El_Chompo 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +givemeajackson Some people don't mind having more road noise and a harder suspension for a faster every day car. More people I think will sacrifice a little bit of speed to ride in comfort and still be pretty fast.

    Yet another great episode with Mr. Harris. Paddle shifters be damned. I'd take the Aston Martin V12 Vantage, the non-S model, because of the availability of a manual gearbox. Plus its a great GT car that can also do track duty. You just can't beat a V12 and rear wheel drive combo. Plus the looks alone would have me take one over both of the them. The Porsche is a precision track machine that really belongs on the track and of you are gonna go down the route of speed, why not just get the GTR for cheap and keep the Aston for everything else :p

    How can anyone who love REAL cars say, that the GT3 is boring? So you have a car, which is fast, but also absolutely fun to drive - dominates every other car [even exotics like Ferraris and Aston's] and it revs to 9000 rpm... and some people repeat blindly the Clarkson doctrine, that 911 have to be boring???
    Please, change your stroller with a real car - and at least test drive a Porsche.
    Sorry, but I can't take this ignorance anymore!

    • @hugevibez
      @hugevibez 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Can't a car be both brilliant and boring at the same time? I do think Porsches are a boring choice for a car to own, especially the design, but because of the way they drive I'm willing to forgive that. Can't think of any other car within this space that's as compact, swift and usable.
      The line between love and hate is very thin indeed.

    • @Dominikmj
      @Dominikmj 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Dion Suurmond You could say, that the concept gets boring - as they always stay with their formula. But if you would know Porsche a bit better, you would know that Porsche did exciting stuff [911 GT1 - not at all a 911 - despite its name], Carrera GT, 959, now the new 918, the 944 turbo and don't forget the brilliant Boxsters [Spyder] and Caymans [R] - and then there were concepts like the amazing Panamera Sport Turismo [always said, that the Panamera would be never my style, until I have seen this] and the classic 928 [which supposed to be the successor of the 911].
      But also fact is, that customers [not people who just talk and don't have the money] love the 911 - that makes it for Porsche unkillable.
      If you say, that the 911 is boring, it is just that you are bored, that the basic form can be anticipated and gets never super futuristic [that might be the death sentence for Porsche]. The 911 is an icon - and lets face it - Ferrari doesn't have an iconic [and still produced] model, Lamborghini doesn't has it, Aston Martin DB line was discontinued in between and cannot seen as a cohesive icon... McLaren has the F1 - which was just a "masturbation" template... but was sold in homeopathic quantities.
      I loved for example the new [and classic] targa design of the 991. It is amazing, it is new. There is also plenty of new technologies applied in the new car. And again - if you drive it, you won't be bored.
      But as coach potato, who anticipates every half year or so a new car... mostly models which are too expensive for 99.999% of us and built in 3 figures quantities... a new 911 might be just boring.
      But then - just watch the Jetsons and masturbate over the next Ferrari.

    • @2002RM
      @2002RM 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dominik MJ Dude, you have to accept that "liking" a car ( as you alluded to) is a very fine thing. Even though I agree with your point of view about it not being boring, I would still say its less adventurous in design that a lot of the others. I'm not talking about engineering design by the way, just purely aesthetics. At least, this is the common perception. And you're right, if you drive one you'd probably feel differently and even fall in love. But this is not necessarily about the looks. Its like two girls - the one that you dream about, then sleep with and find out she's good in bed. But then the other one, who doesn't look as hot, until you get her into bed and find out she's an animal! Oh man alive! And then what do you do? You don't go around bragging that she's an animal in bed (unless you want someone else to take her off your hands). You don't tart her up with loads of extra's or get her to wear a ton of fake tan. You just let everyone say what they want to say about her, but in your heart you now know the truth, that you would never go back to that stunner. That's love. That's why Porsche people stay Porsche.

    • @Dominikmj
      @Dominikmj 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      2009 Tax
      I can live with the statement you mentioned... "It is not as adventurous" than other cars. And I also understand, if people say, that they prefer the other car.
      This is taste. However if you say that a car IS boring (what you didn't said, but others did) and this directly connected to a video which just proofed, that it isn't (as such), then I revolt.
      But people have always something to complain about. I remember the 996 with its sunny side up headlamps- quite a controversial design (after the classic round lamps before and after) - and people complaint. Now Porsche went back to the classic, but improved every little bit of the design (I really cannot imagine, to make the 911 more beautiful... all proportions are cohesive, it is just so perfect) and people complain that it is boring. Ha?
      Anyway... you can't really argue about taste. But somebody who reduces a trio of amazing sportscars only to their looks, IS boring. And has a lack of integrity and watches to much Top Gear.

    Chris: please keep making longer videos like this! Your best videos are the ones where you put cars on public roads as well as the circuit and really spend some time communicating what it's like to drive the cars. Your ability to distill handling characteristics into a monologue that travels well over fibre optics is your strongest suit. It's always fun watching you hoon, but it's the descriptive stuff that you do much better than other auto journalists. Please keep doing plenty of it!

    Who are these people who are forcing manufacturers to make paddles instead of manuals? Apparently the vast majority of buyers prefer paddles, but I still haven't met such a person. I'm waiting for the day ferrari makes another gated shifter, if they ditch that forever, they might as well change their badge to fiat

    • @devward
      @devward 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I was the same way, until i drove a 2011 M3 with paddles, and let me tell you... they are brilliant. Wasn't missing the manual at all. Not only that but the transmission in the BMW doesn't receive the praise that say a PDK receives so i couldn't imagine what a proper flappy paddle gear box feels like. I think its the fact that you get lightning F***ing fast shifts with the flexibility that you don't have to operate a performance clutch around town in stop and go traffic. Just let the computer do the work. Thats what appealed to me.

    • @TheTonicro
      @TheTonicro 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      wel they did diitch manuals, you can not buy a new ferrari with a manual
      i too would love a gated manual with sound it makes, but in todays world of e-diffs, tc-s and God know what everything is connected and controlled through ecu's i honestly believe that todays supercars would be undriveable without electronics and paddles

    • @Munkenba
      @Munkenba 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      TheTonicro yes but we need a return to analogue supercars. I drove a Ferrari ff a few years ago and it was incredible, the power was immense, the traction was incredible and it was so easy, but I felt nothing, I might as well have been in a video game, I could not feel the track beneath me. Try an old 911 with half the power and its a whole different story. My ultimate road car would be 1100 kg, 400hp rear drive, unassisted manual with great styling. Computers don't belong in great cars, and some day analogue will make a comeback.

    This was one of the best videos in a while because a) you've finally tested these (utterly awesome) cars one a welsh b-road as you did in older videos and b) because it felt much more passionate than latest releases.... all in all awesome work from our most favourite hoonigan!!

  • @Dragonrockstar88
    @Dragonrockstar88 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I really enjoy these videos a lot. Side by side comparisons on road and track. I want more like this. Your normal videos of good sideways hoonery on a track is all good and fun, but I really enjoy seeing how these extraordinary cars are in ordinary situations as well.

    GT3 - what an ASTOUNDING engine sound! Perfect!

    Aston Martin any day, its a good road car, looks stunning (not in yellow),makes a great noise, quite practical and you will look really cool while driving it. Porsche GT3 is a great car and deserves allot of respect, and for the price/performance its a bargain for some people, but the Aston is just more worth it.

      Will James My brother has a AM vantage. I think his car is terrible, it falls apart cuz it's hand built. He thinks his car is awesome, because it has character cuz it's hand built. I have a 911 turbo. I think 911s are the best car in the world, exotic performance without the flashy "look at me" attitude. My brother hates my car cuz it's too fast and it doesn't have the flashy "look at me" attitude.Variety is the spice of life

      I test drove the v12 s a few days ago and was blown away... kicked out the rear coming onto the M25 with my brother behind in his C4S, which he found amusing... but all in all, I get mine end of March lol! Stunning thing

    Awesome video and great cars. Really digging Chris' driving as well, he's very quick when posting lap times and when it comes to doing sideways stuff he's totally calm and collected. Wish I could drive like you can mate!

    This video added reason for me to get my v12 vantages s. So informative yet entertaining. It has details, sounds, and emotion in buckets. I have watched this over and over! True car enthusiasts, try watching this video wearing good quality headphones with an open can of motor oil and having melted some plastic to add to the senses and try not to smile!! Impossible..😋🙃

    Harris' reaction at 13:31 is priceless. Not sure if he's incapacitated from the sound of the engine or the centrifigul force

    Nothing better than a near half hour review by Chris Harris, with three exceptional cars.

  • @BruceRKF
    @BruceRKF 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Brilliant video, like always, and almost half an hour long! Many thanks for that!
    Different verdict for me, though. Aston, Merc, Porsche. In that order. Simply because I live in Germany and am bored to death by 911s. The GT3 is the best car, no doubt about it, but I'd still go for looks instead of speed.
    Now, where's that money I remember I had when I woke up this morning? Oh, wait...

    I'm a bit of a yob, I love German engineering, good looks, quality, and rarity. That leads me to the C63 Black Series as my top choice. The Porsche is incredible as always and the Aston sounds like an Aston. Chris Harris, is

    I love Aston Martins, but they are just becoming more and more ancient in my opinion...

    • @HugoElders
      @HugoElders 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is also what i find fascinating about Aston Martin. They seem to be a bit more oldschool with what they offer. This way they remain extremely pure - Power Beauty Soul

    • @TheBrokenEclipse
      @TheBrokenEclipse 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, it does have its charm that they do not move with the rest of the pack, however, the excuse that they want to "remain pure" is pure bollocks in my opinion. To stay "pure" is not the same as not innovating - for example, using a magnetic ride would help improve overall drive-ability (both comfort and full on track) - furthermore, while the engine is amazing, it is clearly lacking behind in more than one area...

    Million dollar question. What is the 'RS' going to be like? :) Pretty darn good I reckon. Chris... you're face impressions when you are driving the GT3, is making get goosebumps! What a joy that 911 must be to drive on the TRACK with no speed cameras, no bumps or speed limits and that ENGINE at 9,000 rpm! DAMN!

    Three of my most beloved cars, beautiful British countyside, eloquent and likeable host, information paired with emotion... /Drive and especially the segment "Chris Harris on cars" is the motoring show that Top Gear could´ve been. I´m just gutted beyond belief I have discovered this show only very recently, and I kind of feel that my love for Top Gear was vastly bigger than their quality justifies.
    Again, the choice of cars in this video are to me what a joint concert of The Beatles, Elvis and Mozart would be to a music enthusiast. They fill me with joy, to the brim.
