True story: When my husband and I were looking for our home, we went to a house that was a bug out location and the pictures were so pretty. The house was beautiful and the property looked so nice. Except you had to shlep up this steep hill with a worn gravel road that was more mud than gravel to get to the shangrila house at the top. We tried so hard that day to get to it and it was raining. Needless to say, we decided that we weren't going to buy that house, nor were we going to see it.
I totally understand the house hunting saga. Stick with it. You'll find your home. :)

Oh my gosh guys, we are dying laughing over here! Honestly, we could write a book about all the mishaps and craziness we have been through over the years. After a day of working on a 120 year old house and all the "fun" that goes along with that, we really needed to come home and laugh with some younger kindred spirits. As we say here in the south, sometimes ya gotta make chicken salad out of chicken poop! Sorry about your britches! :) Love you guys and your tenacity!

You may be aware already but the first house reminds me of the fact that your insurance rates are partially determined by the distance to your local fire department. Something to consider and possibly price out (roughly). Best of luck on your search!
Extra air conditioning can be a good thing but definitely not in the pants. I laughed out loud because my hubby has done the same thing. LOL. Sorry about the flat and the rain but it is so nice to see guys. I appreciate you taking us along. Thank you!
Next time you have a flat, you might want to keep the wheel on the ground to loosen the bolts, the contact to the road will give resistance.

Your boys are so good, quiet and respectful when you are filming. When I was there age, especially Munche's age, I never stopped talking. I think I said "Mom? mom! mom! mom! mom! Look!" Or something along those lines every 5 minutes. Great vlog today! Love seeing properties with you. I would love to see a "day in a life" video or homeschooling video. Don't get me wrong, I have so much respect for the videos you do put out and I am the first to watch them. Having your family in my life makes everything better!

I've been going through your videos. I too am searching for something. I just don't know as well as you do what it is I am looking for.
After I went to sleep and before I woke up last night, after watching several of your installments I saw your homestead property. It was between 12 and 17 miles outside of Ashland, There was a burned out house, not clean down to the foundation like the hillside foggy place with all the switchbacks in the road on this video. With this one, you would have to deal with the burnt house before you could rebuild. The upside was you have power, telephone line, I workable driveway that has been graveled so you won't sink out of sight in the North Carolina mud, septic and a water system that will need some TLC. They had been getting their water off their neighbor's land, from a spring up above the land that is for sale. This place was on a flat road, much like the road that Justin Rhodes lives on. They had moved the road over and there was a section of the abandoned road, a great place for your manure composting pile. It was 12.8 acres with about 4 of that in hardwood. The neighbors, just over the hill are sort of homesteading raising pigs.
I woke up and was deflated. I wish this had been the place you found.
My fellow Californians, I believe you two have found something that will do for the time being. Go for it !
This cracks me up, when we were looking all over Idaho we went to some scary properties in the middle of nowhere, four wheel drive only, and VERY interesting neighbors 😂 keep it up you WILL find the right one ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

Is the journey. Look at how you are immersing yourselves in the discovery of new areas and the total lay of the surrounding counties.
I like how you guys are finding out what you don’t want and what really matters to your family.
Don’t be afraid to low bid on that good property with the derelict house but nice land.
Sometimes the owners themselves are in a learning curve, and might surprise you with coming close to accepting your bid. 👍🏼
Right next to where ever you will keep your needed automobile tools, you may want to put a spare pair of pants. Lol, sorry to be snickering, but we have all had those kind of days. Thank goodness the flat was noticed at a rest stop, and I am glad despite the lousy weather, that you guys are okay. Gotta love your can-do attitude. Can you imagine naming your future property the Hollar "Holler" (hollow)? Bless you guys!👍🏻❤️

I remember reading in Little House books, how they added the potato water back in, to make potatoes creamy. Your meal, was a few veggies away, from being Shepard's Pie. Total comfort meal.

Oh I remember those days when we went to Idaho... looked at sooooooo many on Zillow and every site I could find, LandWatch… etc... and finally went and looked at some and fell in love with our place... and then lost it 3 times and then God blessed us with it 9 months later!
I love the littleguy when he comes up looks in the pans and gives the nod of approval good supper mama. And the pants thanks for the memories of my brothers now I remember why their pants all got ripped out. Laughing with you about your day but these are the good times you will always look back and remember with a belly laugh.

What a blessing. I don't know how many times I have had vehicle troubles and circumstances favored a minimal disruption of my life. OMG, As a mechanic, major cringe action on the pipe wrench attempt at the lug nuts. Glad you found a wrench that fits and acquired some air conditioning in the process.

What a day you had! We bought our place on a ridge, but we have the township plow that plows/sands the road that runs through the center of our property. Our land has two ridges and a hollar that splits it right down the middle. We love the hills, ravines, and bottom land and would not have even looked at flat land -- but that comes at the expense of flat spots. It costs a lot of money to flatten land on a ridge top, and pasture land is likely to be pretty angled -- but it does lead to an interesting layout if you wind up with multiple buildings!
Anyway, that second place looked awful steep. Maybe if you fixed up the road, but getting in and out on a frozen road would be pretty dangerous, and plowing may be very difficult. Good luck with your search!

When it rains it pours. That tire has a lot of lug nuts. Enjoy your videos. Nancy and I are 50 years in your future. We have our 12 acres in the midlands of SC. Almost isolated or as we say we are on the second dirt road off the black top back on a large utility reserve. Keep looking one day it will all work.
Mike had a "Ben Day" on Sunday! Haha. Changed the alternator on his big diesel truck in a parking lot Sunday a couple hours away from home. Thankful for a mechanical guy who carries tools and knows how to improvise!

Love your property hunting videos. Reminds me of all the places I looked at when looking for a home/farm 2 years ago. I had some silly adventures with my realtor. Wish I had it on camera! She was awesome and a real trooper!
Kudos Ben on maintaining the positivity (at least in front of the camera) during the tire shenanigans! Whenever I show my husband any videos where Ben is fixing things, he always gives the nod of approval and a hearty "nice way to problem solve!" (he's a former mechanic and currently works in fabrication so he appreciates a creative solution). Keeping you all in our hearts as you continue your search for property!

We are building an off grid cabin up on the Canadian East Coast and we think we have found our property, we didn't need to do much searching but it looks like property hunting has been fun for you guys! Liked the video on the mountain property, especially the road views getting there. A Heliport site would be needed for emergency tho, ;)
The burned out property gave me an idea to share. If you find a property with a trash house and a solid foundation then you could check with the local fire dept. and see if they would like to practice on a house fire, then set it up with them and permit if necessary and burn the house down, far easier to clean up, you'd just have to make sure the power was off and isolated for the short term.
Meg, your video for you review of checking out all the states was superb!!! It appeared to be professionally done, easy to follow, and great clips and reviews. I couldn't post then to let you guys know. But I highly recommend it for those that might have missed it.

I'm wanting to move around the outskirts of the Asheville area too but only need 2 bed- 1 to 2 bath on about 2 to 3 acres. It's time for me to downsize from 10 acres and too much house to smaller. I'm getting into my middle 50's I'm just too far away from a big enough city for Medical and such. Yes there's a town but very small. So I'm watching you guys shop for your place. :)

That property was super steep and you definitely do not want to be so far out that you can't get help if you need it!! That is one of the things we had to think about when searching for our property as well. You will find the one for y'all in due time!! 💜
