- Silent footage of African American communities in Richmond, VA, shot on Super 8mm film in 1970 by Appalshop filmmaker Ben Zickafoose. Zickafoose made this film--which he titled "Black Power Trip"--while a student of sociologist Helen Matthews Lewis at Clinch Valley College (now UVA-Wise), located in the coal region of southwestern Virginia. His thesis for Lewis' sociology class, the film 'Coal Miner Frank Jackson', became one of Appalshop's first feature documentaries in 1971.

I was born in Richmond and was seven years old when this was filmed. My grandfather was a Greyhound driver and I can recall hanging out in the bus station downtown and doing ride alongs with him on the Richmond to Norfolk run. He wore a uniform that looked like an airline pilots uniform. It was pretty cool for a seven year old kid. I would stand next to him as he greeted passengers and took their tickets proudly saying “ That’s my granddaddy. He’s the bus driver ! Riding Greyhound back then was akin to riding a plane. The station was clean, busses were clean, staff was professional, and most importantly, the customers were orderly.

I looked at this looking for my parents because they were teenagers then and definitely lived in two African-American neighborhoods in Richmond ( Church Hill and Blackwell ) :-) Seriously though whenever I see old footage like this, I stop and think " we truly are a beautiful people." Yes we still are, but I don't know if it's the clothes, pride that radiates from the adults, or the innocence of the children, but we really seem to shine in vintage videos-definitely works of art.

Although the Capitol of the Confederacy, Richmond is a unique Southern city with a mix of Southern and Mid Atlantic influence. It's my home and I love it.

I totally agree with u being from DC Richmond reminds me of some parts of Dc and Baltimore not exactly like those cities but it has more in common with those cities opposed to Raleigh and Charlotte there a lot slower in my opinion.

I lived in Richmond (far West End, Henrico County, and for a while, Powhatan) from 1987 to 1993, and absolutely loved the place. Of all the places I ever lived (an Air Force brat), it remains one of my favorites.
I used to spend a lot of time in the building across the street from the opening shot. Thanks for the upload.

It's so wierd Richmond was the capital of the confederacy but has more of a mid Atlantic Northern vibe it really did and still does this video reminds of Baltimore.

Bussed in 71 to Baker Street Elementary from Cherokee Road. I found new and different cultural norms. Sometimes things got scary but my best friends were always there to help my naive a**. Those schoolmates taught me to appreciate everyone; 52 years ago. Carl and Jeffrey. I love them for what they shared of themselves. Go Rams!

It got gentrified and woke -- I lived there from '98 until 5 months ago. '98 it was similar to this video to some degree. I love it too, but realize it is not what it was.

Those demons killed a good family friend of ours in '79. And it was truly an awful thing. But RVA has had a lot of bad stuff happen, it also has a lot of good to it as well.

Historic homes had become so rundown and cheap, plus Church Hill had thee most addresses zoned for business of any Richmond neighborhood. It was only a matter of time. Having grown up in Richmond and gone to school in dangerous Church Hill, I never saw these homes as being beautiful. That is, until my teacher took us to her Church Hill home on Venable and I got to see the true beauty of these homes. No brown-painted floors and windows covered in plastic. No overbearing darkness from covered windows as if living in a hide-out, no lowered ceilings, no cracked plaster and leaning floors, no porches caving in. Only the beauty of the wood and the moldings and the transoms and the light. A true testament to honoring what many let go of. These houses were made to last forever with care.

Yep. Hull Street near Broad Rock Road. Had the best drugstore (Shadwell's) ever. Great place to hang out. You could get anything you wanted.
