Scott Mallory if by "hot spots" you mean worst crime areas. I was a Norfolk policeman for years, lost count of the shootings, robberies, drug deals etc on MLK in Norfolk. In fact one of the worst ghettos in Virginia is right off of it, across the street from downtown.
Actually, following your concepts, there are three Virginias: Southwestern, Northern Virginia, and the rest of the State. Nevermind that Northern Virginia is fundamentally an entirely separate State, but unfortunately not in fact.
Spot on. Lived in Danville my whole life. Robbed at gun point 3 times by age 18. Car was broken into 5 times and I have always lived in pretty good neighborhoods

I have lived in numerous areas of Virginia. Born, raised and retired in Roanoke. The criteria this guy uses to rate the cities is fair to a degree but not everyone puts the same value on things at different ages. For instance, retired, doing fine and I wouldn't mind living in Galax or Richlands or even Marion. Danville is also nice. But to me the worst cities in Virginia is All NOVA cities. All NOVA cities have an extremely high cost of living, traffic is notoriously terrible and it takes an hour to go to the mall and back. (not including the time it takes to park, walk inside, walk back outside and find your car, IF it is there.) The older you get the more peaceful area you look for. I will admit Roanoke has a lot more than your top 10, theater, sports, and easy access to a lot. That's why I am in Roanoke. I do miss the hockey in DC, the theater in DC and a few other things. But with the covid, the political climate and a few other things, southwest Virginia is looking pretty damned nice.
@@bestill6635 Virginia is so wide open and diverse for your situation. Anywhere from Augusta County, which is pretty much in the middle of the state and fairly close to Charlottesville and surrounds Waynesboro. Also it is where the Blue Ridge Parkway meets the Skyline Drive. Henry County is south and near the North Carolina line. Martinsville, smaller city, is near and Martinsville Raceway if youa re into NASCAR. Giles County is Blacksburg area and it has some really nice areas to homestead. I guess it all depends on how close to what you wish to be. Roanoke has more culture availability, broadway plays, museums, sports like minor league hockey and baseball. So If you want that type of closeness then you may wish to look at Botetourt and Craig counties. I hope this was of some help.
@@EzElegance Who, me? If you're talking about me, I left out NOVA, Ricmond area because they were asking about homesteading. As far as travelling, I have been to 46 of the 50 contiguous states, MULTIPLE times, lived in NOVA, worked for 11 years in DC, had offices in NYC, Atlanta and Salt Lake City, been to MULTIPLE Canadian provinces and several locations in Europe.
He forgot A LOT of cities. Hopewell #2, negative! The burg & Richmond hitting a tie at #1. Hopewell I'll give it #5. The cities he mentioned are never heard of towns.
I grew up in Virginia and you can't help but fall in love with the State. That doesn't mean we don't have areas in cities where the poor and areas of the cities that have lost its charm. But the beauty of Virginia will shine through the bad.
I'm from Charlottesville Va and I've been in every City/County that he mentioned and dude had it so twisted!!!! Take it to Southside in Richmond or Newport News or even Roanoke. I'm sure there are problems everywhere but to be honest VA is one of the best places to be.
@Nick Johnson - When are you going to update “the worst cities/towns in VA”? Just curious. I live in a tiny town not far from Richlands. It’s called Lebanon..just like the country in the Middle East 😂. Most of the people here drive to Bristol, VA or Bristol, TN for everything from work to shopping. But, during this time in September 2020, it feels really safe. I’ve lived all over VA in my 61 years... Lynchburg, Charlottesville, NOVA/Fairfax, and Virginia Beach area. We were transferred here in southwest Virginia. I have family in Roanoke, Richmond, Tazewell (it’s pronounced with a short “a” sound as in “cat”), Lynchburg, and Danville, as well as Bristol, VA. I think the older you are the more you appreciate the quietness. For younger people it would be seriously boring. Did you do a “best cities in Virginia” yet? Also, where are you from originally? I think 🤔 I can hear a Southern accent.
@Nick Johnson - Hi 👋🏻 down there 👇🏻 🙂. Sooo... do you live in “The Triangle”, Charlotte or Asheville? I’m thinking 🤔 if you used to live in California, you couldn’t survive in some small town in NC 😂! I actually lived for 2 years in the OBX. Definitely not the same as the CA beaches. I have friends in San Diego area and also near Palo Alto. It was really gorgeous but it’s been 5 years since I’ve been there. I hope they haven’t ruined those areas yet 😕
Your channel is so racist! As a person that grew up in Danville, it's not a bad place to live. There's plenty of valuable real estate. I've never drank a malt liquor or owned a pit bull
Danville's crime rate, unemployment rate, property values, and drug abuse rates speak otherwise. I've been to Danville, man. There's some nice parts to it, but overall, overwhelmingly a shithole.
Fav S I agree with you 100% I used to live in Newport News in Apartments. The schools are crap! I was the only white kid in my class. I was being bullied a lot. Very ghetto! But, I was born in Portsmouth. Right now, I live in Lansing, NC. Much better!
Born and raised in Danville. My Mom’s family is from Danville back and back and my Dad’s family is from a tiny city outside Galax. I’m not huge into Danville, but efforts are being made to improve living there.
Wait. Half these places are actually pretty nice. The real list would go something like this. 10. Louisa 9. VA Beach 8. Portsmouth 7. Emporia 6. Hopewell 5. Northern Virginia 4. Eastern Henrico 3. Norfolk 2. Petersburg 1. Richmond
As a Virginian, I find this video very insulting. Yes, Galax has had some rough times economically, but it is not as portrayed here. As for Wytheville, it is a beautiful place, home to a great community college and plenty of stores and restaurants. Come live here for a while and then maybe you will have the right to judge.
True mate ! This guy knows nothing about any place, he just makes videos about places according to their ratings and a short tour . ! You cant really judge a place until you live there for a long time
Not really if you look at the statistical standpoint hes actually right. Go look at them they are posted for every one to see. You can even go to area vibes and it's like this. I live in Danville and I completely agree I'm in the process of moving as we speak this city is literally a pile doo doo.
I think his rating system had a lot to do with availability of jobs and the value of the real estate (not just violence). It’s a shame because the land is cheap and oftentimes beautiful, but it’s too far to commute to a lot of these cities. Richmond has jobs, Petersburg can commute to Richmond and other cities for good jobs which is why they weren’t included. Portsmouth is odd because it is in an area surrounded by jobs. Most of the cities in this video have been abandoned because people can’t making a living there.
I don't know how you define "worst," but I remember when Richmond had more murders in one year than the city of Miami, Florida did! But maybe times have changed: the majority of deaths from opioids may be more in the far western part of Virginia now.
I live in Danville also in the county which is always better than living in the city the houses look better also. Crime has gone up im the city but people are working there's a job if you want one i like my small town living
Born and raised in Virginia, in Lebanon in Russell County. It was a great place to have grown up as a kid back in the 70's. My father was the chief of police for 25 years between Lebanon and Honaker and I worked for him as an officer right out of high school in 1982. Lebanon sure has changed since I left, seems those drugs are every where. Hated to hear the Bristol Mall closed. Got a lot of great memories from my hometown. Richlands had a great indoor swimming pool.
I grew up in Danville and it is absolutely a horrible place to live. I was lucky enough to have left it as well as most of my friends and we all have normal lives. The people I know who didn't leave it do not. Drugs, violence and incarceration are their lives from what I know.
Born and raised in Martinsville VA, and it’s not that bad at all. Currently living in northern va, NOVA. Martinsville, Danville, and South Boston are literally sister cities.
The Commonwealth is gorgeous!!! I deal with the traffic near DC because of the Norman Rockwell feeling of the town I live in. What he described here is the unfortunate description of a lot of towns that are far away from high end jobs. I thought his presentation was hysterical!!! I’ve heard of many of the towns he described because --well, I’m a nerd who looks at maps. I wish he would do a similar video on Maryland!!!! Nanjemoy is a fascinating place in these United States 🤣
Its Tazwell, like Tazmania, not like taser. You're obviously anti-southside and southwest. The worst city in Virginia is Petersburg. Most of these "cities" hardly qualify as such. They are big towns. The crime rates are astronomically higher in Petersburg, RIchmond, Newport News, and Norfolk. The reason property values are low in places like Galax is because the cost of living is a tiny fraction of what it is in Northern Virginia, not because its an awful place to live.
Imachowderhead shoutout, my grandmother was raised up in the Well. Always remember the smell when we went to visit her, getting near grandma's.... windows up
I moved to Marion from Jacksonville FL and it's been one of the best decisions of my life. The air is clean, the people are friendly, the scenery is beautiful. Yeah sure I have to drive 30 minutes to get to Lowes but I'll take that over being stuck in 295 traffic in the FL heat ANYDAY.
@@bestill6635 honestly, Marion is a great retirement town. Which is part of its problem - beautiful, generally quiet, but lacks a lot of entertainment for younger people.
I love how all these comments are saying Richmond is bad but they probably don't actually live here😒😒 people just love talking about shit they don't know about
Sara Elizabeth there are ALOT more places that are worse than Va. And yet people like this dumbass had to make a video SPECIFICALLY on Va. Why? Because he's pretending to know wtf he's talking about, and I bet you and anybody else in the comments that he doesn't live here. AND its not just Va that has shootings everyday, other cities have them too.
I've never lived in Richmond but I lived in Hopewell, right next to it. CGW and Hopewell high were some schools, Harry E. James, Dupont and Patrick Copeland were the elementary. Just some information so you know I'm not a keyboard warrior lmao
Lauren Terry I heard Petersburg has a lot of crime but my girlfriends and I had a blast at the Cajun restaurant in town! I would recommend going there. And there's a place where you can get beignets in the morning. The police were there all night and were really nice. I can't complain.
My family moved from Los Angeles (Artesia) in 1965 to Pulaski VA due to my father's job transfer. (Machinist Jobs). I was in school for 3 yrs before the school system caught up to what I had learned in school in L.A. compared to rural Virginia. The area along the southern border, Danville, South Boston et al, had economies based almost solely on tobacco. Major Fairs and concerts with national stars would perform after the big tobacco auction in Danville. Other towns were supported mainly by furniture factories. Big names in high quality furniture were based out of Martinsville. Nearby Bassett was the same. The coal is now cut by computer directed machinery controlled by someone sitting in an air conditioned building. Big difference from the 70's when the elevators would descent hundreds of feet into the coal bed, with paychecks so large that Cadillac dealers and high end televisions were purchased with cash. No longer. Just 20 miles down the road Grundy, a major coal mining town, gets visits from a Doctors without Borders organization and there is video on PBS of dentists coming to town. The story included serving bowl size containers, full of extracted teeth. Some of the partcipants had WALKED 15+ miles to get there.
Godflesh Undead Honestly fail to understand how anyone can call Roanoke one of the worst cities in the state, even Northwest doesn’t look that bad in comparison to most cities in VA
Okay this is a bad video. If you truly want a list of the worst cities in Virginia, here it is from a Virginia native. (These are in no particular order) Sterling Portsmouth Petersburg Richmond Dinwiddie Colonial Heights Hopewell Tappahannock Norfolk Hampton
I was just recently in South Boston and Danville. It's a really cool historic area with Civil War and Revolutionary War battle sites. Danville is a REALLY nice town with a great downtown area. Although it does have a less great side of town, it still is a great city. Also, Richlands is just there. Like literally.
I’m from Henry County. Growing up in the country was great! But I can say that since manufacturing left Martinsville/Henry County, it has really went downhill.
@@NickJohnson My dad was raised and born in Collinsville VA and later moved to Martinsville, he's pretty old now, 53 I think. He never had problems with the people and locals but he was in jail and he had a LOT of problems with the cops and the law. Martinsville is kinda dangerous, but not that bad, I had many friends there. Not gonna lie, the cops there are rats. Especially the cop who fought with some kid in the middle school he's a jackass.
I’m assuming he forgot about Wise or Appalachia or Pound Virginia. No jobs hardly any healthcare or housing. If you’re poor you’re poor if you’re rich you’re rich.
Richlands is accurate. The school system sucks, there is a major drug problem, and I know more unemployed people than I do employed people. No business here wants to hire anyone, especially anyone who’s went to college to get a certification or degree like I did. I’m literally having to find work an hour or longer away.
Plenty of jobs in NoVa, just go to UsaJobs(dot)Gov, for example, if you haven't tried yet. Below are some tips for anyone who wants to consider GS jobs. 😊 🔹 Be sure to type in your resumé or use/copy from Text or NotePad, not copy-paste from MS Word as the formatting will funk the system & most recruiters prefer text resumé. Have at least 2 good references, but if without much work experience yet, professor reference might do + a copy of transcripts (just follow whatever the job announcement says). No worries about credit score if a new college graduate. Have a clean record (no crimes). Check out possible GS benefits while there online. 🔸 My millennial son moved to NoVa 4+ years ago from Va Beach after graduating from ODU, then a few friends followed him there since, so I've seen it done. They've had to share an apartment, though, my son did after a year of living solo & walking only 5 minutes to his workplace & WholeFoods, lol, no car at first (there's Metro for public transport, if needed).🔸
I’m from Virginia :) it’s beautiful but yeah there is a lot of history too and creepy stories and a lot of terrible places nobody wants to go! So be aware if you come to virginia
@@Jorge_Yabar I agree that Virginia has its up and downs. The traffic laws are crazy here but there's definitely a lot of things to do here in Virginia. From the outdoors enjoying nature, swimming holes,Trails, historical places, Etc. But in my personal opinion I don't think Virginia is boring.
As someone who was born in your number one spot, I have to agree with all you have said. Things have gotten so much worse since I lived there. We (my children and I) moved away ten years ago, and I am so happy we did. Only going back once or twice a year to see family on holidays. They are saying they are going to make it a casino town, I know its to help the economy, but with all the drugs and crime, things are sure to get worse before they get better.
No worse than any other place. Every State has bad areas, because people are screwed up everywhere. Rich people have high crime rates too. It’s just that you don’t find the bodies until years later. Or maybe killed and dropped the body in a bad area. Virginia is a beautiful state with its wonderful 4 seasons, especially Fall with those brilliantly bright colored leaves that is nearly breathtaking.
Yes, this part of the state no longer have any real industries left. No jobs equals no taxes to pay for good schools, roads, etc. How are they supposed to be great places with no jobs?
I live in Richlands VA and I agree. Can't find a job at all. I did custom exhaust on vehicles years ago and that's a job that would be in demand almost anywhere else. But here, you can't get a job unless your 16 and its at Mcdonald's or Wendy's or Burger King. Even then you have to know someone.
I’m originally from Long Island and moved to Danville about 9 years ago. It’s a very strange town. There’s no real career opportunities here, there are more church’s then people, a lot of people put on an act like they’re “rich” and act stuck up, and it’s mind boggling how many restaurants there are in this town. I think there are like 5 McDonalds in this town and multiple other big fast food chains. Crime is bad when your speaking of per capita, but compared to other places it’s really not too bad. It’s really not too terrible of a place to live, I’ve seen a lot worse, but definitely not a town that I want to spend the rest of my life in.
Samuel Garcia Petersburg have like 4 murders a year please!!!! He left out the real dangerous city The CAPITAL CITY RICHMOND YALL AINT WATCHING THE NEWS.........MURDERS AND SHOOTINGS LIKE EVERDAY NO EXAGGERATING.... ESPECIALLY THIS JULY A LOT OF GIRLS BERN GETTING KILLED

I was born in Abingdon (1958), lived in Norton & St. Paul, and Charlottesville (left 1969).
Looking to retire and set up a homestead in VA, somewhat secluded but not boonies. What areas would you suggest?
I live in Wytheville & this guy has clearly never traveled. He's obviously doing all his travels from behind a keyboard 🙄
Here's a couple of places I'm surprised he didn't mention...

I'm from CA and live in N.C. right next door to you up there!

Danville's crime rate, unemployment rate, property values, and drug abuse rates speak otherwise. I've been to Danville, man. There's some nice parts to it, but overall, overwhelmingly a shithole.

You cant really judge a place until you live there for a long time
Its just a video

Wytheville is great.
I’ve scratched some places off my list because of this video. Shame it’s misleading. How’s Patrick county?
Very inaccurate

Intersection of Mercury and Jefferson in Newport News/Hampton.
I don't know how you define "worst," but I remember when Richmond had more murders in one year than the city of Miami, Florida did! But maybe times have changed: the majority of deaths from opioids may be more in the far western part of Virginia now.
I live in danville....it is not that damn bad🖕 we just got a few fools down here like everywhere else.

The Commonwealth is gorgeous!!! I deal with the traffic near DC because of the Norman Rockwell feeling of the town I live in. What he described here is the unfortunate description of a lot of towns that are far away from high end jobs. I thought his presentation was hysterical!!!
Chris S no, Galax is an aweful place to live. That's pretty much true.
Danville is my hometown and the city has improve a lot. Jobs are up and crime is down. I love my hometown and plan to move back there.

Plenty of jobs in NoVa, just go to UsaJobs(dot)Gov, for example, if you haven't tried yet. Below are some tips for anyone who wants to consider GS jobs. 😊
🔹 Be sure to type in your resumé or use/copy from Text or NotePad, not copy-paste from MS Word as the formatting will funk the system & most recruiters prefer text resumé. Have at least 2 good references, but if without much work experience yet, professor reference might do + a copy of transcripts (just follow whatever the job announcement says). No worries about credit score if a new college graduate. Have a clean record (no crimes). Check out possible GS benefits while there online.

As someone who currently lives in Danville this really is the worst place in this state to live. The crimes are getting scarier by the day
No worse than any other place.
I love how he focuses on places in Southwest Va......in which I live and been to🤨 That’s not at all what their like

Well you can always move now!!!!!
My mother grew up in Virginia and I lived there for about six years. It was not my favorite place to live but it's not as bad as some places I've been
I’m originally from Long Island and moved to Danville about 9 years ago.
