    "Normally, the day before a game, we train tactics based on how the rival team is playing. However, United at the moment change their tactics so many times that we don't even know how they're going to play. So the training before the derby Pep said "I don't know what they'll do, so we need to see." and we stopped training after 10mins having barely done anything that day."

    They have a weak midfield on the defensive side. Pogba is a big guy but he's never been a two-way midfielder and he will never be. Juventus surrounded him with midfielders like Marchisio, Khedira, Vidal, Pirlo over the years to take the pressure off of him, so he could just play in a free role where his lack of concentration and consistency didn't hurt the midfield. In ManU, managers and fans just didn't give up on expecting a Vieira out of him.
    To play both Pogba and Fernandes in the midfield gives the team a huge hole in the midfield. Fred or McTominay are far from elite players and they're expected to carry the load whichever plays. So I think at this point they need to part ways with either Pogba or Fernandes and to create a reliable midfield.

    • @dasomannen
      @dasomannen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +62

      Agreed, also they wan't McTominay to be a 6 I guess but he 's more of an attacking minded box-to-box midfielder. Their only real CDM is Matic who doesn't play, which isn't so strange since he is in decline. Overall though it's a tactical issue with their press, teamshape and lacking cohesion to be fair.

    • @gunmuratilban8667
      @gunmuratilban8667 3 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      @@dasomannen I agree; but I don't think even an elite CDM would be enough to carry after the duo of Pogba-Fernandes. You can have one of them in your midfield while at least two other rock solid midfielders covering after.
      Another example is 2018 French national team where they surrounded Pogba with Matuidi and Kante. That's the kind of midfield you need with either Pogba or Fernandes.

    Man United must be a goldmine for any football channels, websites, pundits, etc. The tactical analysis of what they are doing wrong must be some of the easiest work these guys have ever done. I think even the most casual of football watchers or players could probably point out issues. If I had a football channel, I'd devote a video a week just to point out whatever tactical deficiency United showcased in their latest matches and watch as the views and ad revenue rolls in.

    @sykethecasualcoach6021 3 ปีที่แล้ว +78

    I always go back to the Maldini sentiment of “if I have to make a tackle then I have already made a mistake.” Defending is all about positioning, body shape, and anticipation. The fact that Maguire has more tackles and fewer interceptions and aerial wins means that he’s putting himself in positions (or is put in positions) where it’s too late for him to win the ball before it reaches its target. As a CB, you’d much rather try winning the ball going forward than tracking back or coming across (duh). It’s such a simple concept (something I’d try to teach to my players), but it’s so hard to execute when only a portion of the team is in the correct positions.

    Years ago when United were regularly losing at home under Moyes and Van Gaal, Danny Murphy pointed out that the size of the pitch of Old Trafford is no longer an advantage for United and is actually detrimental to them, such is their lack of fitness and how bad they are on the ball. This isn't changed all these years later (due to repeatedly appointing coaches that have no idea how to set them up offensively). They remain a downright lazy team as they hardly run, pogba occasionally breaks into a prance, maguire moves like a toddler and bruno just points a lot rather than closing down the space. They therefore don't benefit from the extra pitch space, neither defensively nor offensively. Why they've still not realised that they should reduce the pitch dimensions to that of say, Selhurst Park is beyond me. It's like there's an arrogance that "we're man ya-nited, we have the biggest pitch because we have the best players". Stoke practically survived their first few seasons by putting out the smallest pitch they could get away with.

    The approach to games is the most worrying we're constantly getting outplayed by teams even in our own backyard.
    Our defensive struggle owe much to the fact we do not hold the ball in possession, we are clueless anytime we have the ball for more than 10 passes ultimately giving the opponent the ball and in bad areas too.
    When we signed Sancho I complained about this and unfortunately we have no ball retainer in midfield someone with a clear head who can think in pressure and apply that calming touch, bar Matic who can't play 2 matches in a go.
    What Liverpool, Leicester and Man city have shown is that any team with a dedicated system can beat this united team and do it easily.
    Our defence didn't go that bad, the approach to games have been terrible and the coachIng is the biggest culprit.

    • @WOOOPdoctorFROGhere
      @WOOOPdoctorFROGhere 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      agreed apart from the bit about ten passes. United are lucky to string more than 3 forward passes without losing it. It's become a mini game I play during each laborious viewing of united games, count how many forward passes they can string together before they lose it or go backwards. It's hardly ever more than 3. The first pass is out of defence so that hardly counts then the next two are nervy passes and then it all breaks down and ends up going out for a throw; or hoofed back to de gea to start the process again. I watch a lot of football and there's no other team I can think of that plays such atrociously bad football. They have absolutely no idea what they're doing. It's made all the worse by the fact that moron in the dugout seems to think playing out from the back suits these players. It's nothing more than an invitation for the opponent to have a free shot at goal. United have conceded at least 5 times from playing out from goal kicks yet haven't created a single chance this way, yet they persist with it. Even now, with Ronaldo up front, who wins most aerial balls, the penny still hasn't dropped that you won't concede booting it up to Ronaldo but you probably will concede if you pass your goal kick to maguire and watch him comically trip over his own feet.

      @@WOOOPdoctorFROGhere well said brother, your concerns are as clear as mine. The match against Manchester city showed the gulf in class between both sides, the 10 passes for me was for an hyperbolic effect, sad to say. Harry was brought into the squad to help transition the ball from defense to midfield, by now I had expected we'd have phased out de gea for Henderson who I feel is better in that regard and can ultimately learn quicker...

    Bought Ronaldo, and Sancho, in the same window, for a heap of cash, while still not having figured out, how to fit Pogba and Bruno in the same team.
    Now there are several big money players, out of the team, out of form, or out of place in the "system".
    Speaking of systems, Ole hasn't implemented a defensive system, from what the players have shown, and as evidenced by the graphic used in this video.
    He claims they came to press high... what, with Ronaldo up top? He's not your press high kind of forward. Nor is the midfield trio in sync for their pressing jobs.
    Most high pressing teams have gone with a single holding mid, and allowed 2 central mids to push on. As Utd want to "carry" both Bruno, and Ronaldo, in their defensive set up, they get unbalanced if McFred pushes on as well. Again, evidence in this videos graphic.
    Ole has bag loads of money spent on this team, and there are players with bags of talent in the team. He's got to sort out their defending, and the overall team balance,, if they ever want to seriously challenge for a title again.

    Because defending starts from the frontline, when you have players like Ronaldo in your team, that's your first line of defence wiped out and I say this as a Juventus fan who saw their defending and ultimately results getting progressively worse over 3 years with Ronaldo in the line up. In Juventu's case it wasn't just Ronaldo, they also had a midfield that let's just say was not one of the better ones so the defence in effect had little to no cover and even that is thanks to the wasted 100 million transfer fee on a 34 year old couple with ridiculous wages, basically no money left to take care of the midfield, the actual engine room of a team and part of the team that ultimately makes the difference when it comes winning and loosing games. It never ceases to amaze me how much credit forwards get for putting the ball in the net while doing precious little else while the real different makers which are usually the midfielders get ignored. United are very much heading down that same route! When United took Ronaldo off us, I was the happiest Juventus fan in the world, in my eyes he has ruined Juentus! I'm not for one minute questioning Ronaldo's football qualities, we all know what he has achieved, what people don't see with Ronaldo is how destructive his presence is to the rest of the team, Juventus pretty much stopped functioning as a team the day he arrived and it progressively got worse over the 3 years, they have gone from being a regular champions league contender to an also ran team in the Italian league and all that during Ronaldo's 3 years. Many people seem to keep forgetting it's a TEAM game, for all his qualities Ronaldo is not a team player but worse than that, the preferential treatment he gets destroys the rest of the team. A lot like Juventus, there are the same elements in place at United, no front line defence and questionable midfield cover coupled with the preferential treatment, not exactly a recipe for success.
    The real funny thing about Ronaldo's 3 years at Juventus is that all Ronaldo's die hard fans defend him by pointing out all the goals he scored for Juventus and that he was practically the only one to score, what they won't tell you is that the whole team was built to serve Ronaldo, everyone was expected to play for Ronaldo, only Ronaldo could take free kicks (even though he has to be one of the worst free kick takers in the history of the game). But the thing they mostly wont tell you is that while Ronaldo did OK for himself in terms of his goals quota, as whole Juventus scored considerably less goals during Ronaldo's 3 seasons than they did the previous 3 seasons and we won't even go into wining less and looking like a shadow of the team they were, the key difference between those 2 blocks of 3 season periods is that they were a TEAM in the first block and have never been one with Ronaldo!

      Let me add something to your detailed explanations. Since his depart from Madrid, Ronaldo has 4 different managers in 4 different seasons (it can only add more as we know that Carrick only takes care several matches before Rangnick, which his contract as a manager would end at the end of the season). It's like it's all the managers fault if their campaign go badly when they have Ronaldo in the team.

    Ole has been more focused on the attack rather than defense and you can see it from day 1. We have managed to score more than 5 goals under ole more times than any other manager post SAF. But as said "Attack wins you games and Defense wins you titles" you cannot carry on that attacking philosophy without building a defensive structure first. Even in his first spell we couldnt keep clean sheets and it has been a problem ever since. 20/21 season is a prime example of that too, we came from behind in almost every game that we won. Ole has failed to address that problem and seemed to be casual about it and now he's under pressure because we cannot control games that we should easily dominate, and rely on counter attacks and individual brilliance.

    United cant play from the back with this back four. Maguire and wanbisaka are easy targets and lose ball quite easily. If that's how he wanted to play , he shouldn't have signed them in the first place.

      Ole seems to be too stubborn to acknowledge that none of the back four are comfortable on the ball and an easy mark for turnovers when pressed.

    Shaw have been awful this season and so have maguire. Lindelof and baily have played alright but nothing crazy. The only 2 who have actually played good is varane awb

  • @shashidharprabhu5898
    @shashidharprabhu5898 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    We signed Varane
    Varane got injured
    Now Maguire and Lindelof are not even marking players in the box just roaming freely.
    Other than that it will pe preferable to use Shaw and AWB as wing backs as both are not doing anything defensively(maybe AWB to some extent).

    Without watching this I already know the answer. The personnel aren't good enough (none of Shaw, AWB, Maguire, Lindelof or Bailly get into any of Chelsea, City or liverpool) and the manager is able to set up a defence about as well as Oscar Pistorious

    People loved criticising TAA’s defensive game and sometimes a little too harshly, and I think it’s time we all acknowledge that in comparison to Wan Bissaka his positioning is miles better. He very often cuts out balls over the top and reads the game well. AWB is an excellent 1v1 defender and tackler but his positioning is awful sometimes, and he presses with no regard for the space behind him.

    Listen, Man United might not thank me but get the contract out, put it on the table. Let him sign it, let him write whatever numbers he wants to put on there, given what he's done since he's come in. Ole's at the wheel, man. He's doing it. He's doing his thing. MAN UNITED ARE BACK!

    I think the 40 yards of free space in front of the defence or what you would normally call Mcfred is one of the major problems.

    In short they have someone who's no better than my PE teacher in charge of the team. Man United have very good players including their defenders but if you're set up tactically wrong you'll get exposed. Put prime Maldini in a Solksjaer team and they'd still concede plenty

    4:52 PPDA decreasing over time indicates that the pressing intensity has increased over that period. Am I missing something, or is it some wrong analysis?

      It's the "opposition's" passes per "United's" defensive action. Idea is more the opposition keeps the ball, the press done by United is working lesser and lesser. United is allowing the opposition to keep the ball more/not closing down passing lanes better. If they are allowing them to keep the ball, then that's because Solskjaer wants to play on the counter (tactic he is most comfortable with). If it is the latter, then the coaching issues are worse than what I thought it was.
