No I think that's the case now, but he really did need to get out of the limelight a bit and recover that confidence a bit. Having Mendy there to push him and take the attention away from him and having Tuchel there to be a manager who puts his arm round him and seems to have that personal touch has definitely helped him get back to form. However Mendy has now developed his distribution a lot and has improved a crazy amount and this is making it even harder for Kepa to get back in. I can see him trying to show his worth during the afcon spell and have one more season at Chelsea, but he probably will move away as he most likely wants to play more. Also by then he will have less years on his contract and will be willing to take a wage cut.

Not to mention Rene Higuita, the sweeper keeper who was at 1.75m. But Higuita was the exact opposite of Kepa, as in aggressive, often overly aggressive with running as far as halfway up the pitch like a wingback.

It's just his wage that should be of any concern- his vigor in shootouts and him taking his role in Cup matches has been a beautiful turnaround. He can stay at Chelsea if he brings his contract figures down and still make a big impact when he plays! He was failed by management in the past and scrutiny at a young age can do bad things to great shotstoppers, but that doesn't have to be the last chapter in his narrative. It's also not his fault Edou has been incredible and the defense has turned around with a new coach. I say his value has never been better since Tuchel came, I never think twice when I see him in the lineup anymore :)

Eduard Mendy has been integral since joining Chelsea. Now they are in a Premier League title race and have a strong chance of retaining the Champions league. No surprise Kepa can't get into the first team.
He was never more than just an average keeper and we made a massive mistake by spending 72mil on him. He's been okay since Tuchel came in and has obviously been incredible in penalty shootouts for us but end of the day he simply has to leave as you just can't have 72mil back up keeper making close to 200k a week

One thing I like about football fans is how we always try to gloss over our club's transfer flops, trying to find positives in every little good thing they do (eg Coutinho, Dembele) Fact is as of right now, Kepa is one of European football's biggest ever transfer flops. As the world's most expensive goalkeeer he lost his starting spot to Willy Caballero in his 2nd season and eventually Mendy. I just don't see how he can overcome that. And no the super cup performance doesn't change that. It reminds me of Jamie Carragher when he said "For me, that goal alone was worth £35m" when talking about Andy Carroll's winner vs Everton in the league cup semi-final and saying he (Carroll) would go down as a Liverpool legend. Obviously he goes down as a flop but I do think some context is important. It only became clear Courtois was going to leave late on in the window (everything was delayed by the WC) and so Chelsea were left with very little time to find a keeper. I believe we went for Allison but obviously he’d joined Liverpool by this point. Basically, left with no option as Bilbao had no reason whatsoever to sell at that late stage and so demanded the release clause. I suppose in terms of net spend Kepa cost Chelsea like £40m when you take off what we sold Courtois for. Still a flop at £40m of course but given the lack of options I can see why it happened

A bit similar to Courtois, Chelsea made a bid after which Torres submitted a transfer request a few days before the window closed which didn't leave Liverpool much time at all. Worse still it was the January window which is notoriously difficult when it comes to transfers, let alone last minute ones. So like Chelsea with Kepa, Liverpool panicked and wasted 35m quid on Carroll. I mean sure they had still 15m change left from the Torres deal but that doesn't change that Carroll was a massive flop. Even with a net of £40m, he would be the 2nd most expensive goalkeeper of all time and still one of the worst

As a Chelsea fan, Kepa had a solid first season I would say. He was absolutely superb in the Europa League and a lot of people forget, rival and Chelsea fans alike, that he sent us to the final with his penalty save in the Semi final shootout. Obviously he’s had a dip in form and confidence since then. But I’m all honestly I’d say that first season was enough to justify his price tag. Then once Tuchel came in he managed to regain form and confidence. Even winning us the Super Cup. coming from a Chelsea fan. I don't view his transfer fee as a major cause for concern, especially considering it was a release clause fee that the club were forced to pay in order to sign him. At this point in time he was a major contributing factor for us winning the europa league in 2019, and the uefa super cup in 2021. He's also made great improvements under Tuchel and I think he will only improve more now that we have an owner that utilizes data to make improvements to his sporting teams. people only want to look at his transfer fee, but putting that to the side temporarily, there is an outstanding GK in there somewhere and he is still young enough to prove that over the coming years. Kepa had a brilliant game overall nonetheless. Also, he is a brilliant penalty specialist. I hope the coaching staff eliminate the deficiencies in his game. He is a talented gk and still very young for a gk.

He's been okay since Tuchel came in and has obviously been incredible in penalty shootouts for us but end of the day he simply has to leave as you just can't have 72mil back up keeper making close to 200k a week

Well - under Potter he's back clearly! Not sure what Mendy did that made Potter select Kepa regularly - but generally Kepa has stepped up and is playing much much better. I thought on form Mendy was better and far more commanding - however what we have now is not the Kepa of old...

One thing I like about football fans is how we always try to gloss over our club's transfer flops, trying to find positives in every little good thing they do (eg Coutinho, Dembele)
Fact is as of right now, Kepa is one of European football's biggest ever transfer flops. As the world's most expensive goalkeeer he lost his starting spot to Willy Caballero in his 2nd season and eventually Mendy. I just don't see how he can overcome that. And no the super cup performance doesn't change that. It reminds me of Jamie Carragher when he said "For me, that goal alone was worth £35m" when talking about Andy Carroll's winner vs Everton in the league cup semi-final and saying he (Carroll) would go down as a Liverpool legend. Neither was true in the end
Obviously he goes down as a flop but I do think some context is important. It only became clear Courtois was going to leave late on in the window (everything was delayed by the WC) and so Chelsea were left with very little time to find a keeper. I believe we went for Allison but obviously he’d joined Liverpool by this point. Basically, left with no option as Bilbao had no reason whatsoever to sell at that late stage and so demanded the release clause.
I suppose in terms of net spend Kepa cost Chelsea like £40m when you take off what we sold Courtois for. Still a flop at £40m of course but given the lack of options I can see why it happened
@@stirky08 what you are describing is the Andy Carroll situation. A bit similar to Courtois, Chelsea made a bid after which Torres submitted a transfer request a few days before the window closed which didn't leave Liverpool much time at all. Worse still it was the January window which is notoriously difficult when it comes to transfers, let alone last minute ones.
So like Chelsea with Kepa, Liverpool panicked and wasted 35m quid on Carroll. I mean sure they had still 15m change left from the Torres deal but that doesn't change that Carroll was a massive flop. Even with a net of £40m, he would be the 2nd most expensive goalkeeper of all time and still one of the worst

As a Chelsea fan, Kepa had a solid first season I would say. He was absolutely superb in the Europa League and a lot of people forget, rival and Chelsea fans alike, that he sent us to the final with his penalty save in the Semi final shootout. Obviously he’s had a dip in form and confidence since then. But I’m all honestly I’d say that first season was enough to justify his price tag. Then once Tuchel came in he managed to regain form and confidence. Even winning us the Super Cup. Now in present day I would say he has more than justified his price tag, despite all the memes Chelsea fans and rival fans post about him being the most expensive keeper. With Mendy as #1 and Kepa as #2 I can confidently say that we are in safe hands, literally
He is too good to be no.2 and expensive and replacing Mendy as no.1 looks quite close to impossible...he needs to leave..now it's loan or permanent deal it's upto him and the club...I think the Afcon time when Mendy leaves and Kepa will start in tough games will be very important for him

coming from a Chelsea fan. I don't view his transfer fee as a major cause for concern, especially considering it was a release clause fee that the club were forced to pay in order to sign him. At this point in time he was a major contributing factor for us winning the europa league in 2019, and the uefa super cup in 2021. He's also made great improvements under Tuchel and I think he will only improve more now that we have an owner that utilizes data to make improvements to his sporting teams. people only want to look at his transfer fee, but putting that to the side temporarily, there is an outstanding GK in there somewhere and he is still young enough to prove that over the coming years. COYB!
