I think Colson Whitehead mentioned to @rgay that she likely read the ARC and that the whole cement/concrete thing was fixed in the published copy. But I will check this out when I read the book.

I am pages from finishing this book, it is really a beautifully written book. Some of the most tragic imagery is so beautifully written that I was in awe of the sentence but in pain because of what it describes. He's such a clear writer. I also really love the Author's Note and the beginning of the book, let you know how this book came to be.
Everybody needs a Harriet to get through a successful life. Someone who has our backs.
I agree with Debbie that sometimes woman give up their lives for the sake of their people. My Aunt gave up her life for her family caring for her siblings, their offspring and aging mother. She never married and at the end of her life she was abandoned. No-one took her on and she died alone in a nursing home she hated.
I finished reading the book tonight and I don't have anyone to talk with about it, so here I am enjoying this wonderful chat!
I'm realizing that in this novel characters are kind of functional to the story.

I happen to have some detailed first-hand knowledge on this subject. That book the nickel boys from the nickel Academy is so twisted and convoluted and distorted it's almost impossible to get any idea of the facts from it as they actually happened. That boy who was hitchhiking and picked up by somebody in a stolen car was not on his way to college by any math remains and never did go to college. He was an escapee when he was picked up by that person with a stolen car he was a runaway. The boys in that school committed serious offenses against their inmates such as sexual molestation, attacks, beatings, they stole their food and clothes and shoes, and one boy was beat up so bad his teeth were knocked out all over the floor and he spent weeks and weeks in the hospital at the expense of the State of Florida and many other things happened. They got beat with leather straps as counter influence is against their constant criminal recidivist violent Behavior. That novel is a crock of s*** which really doesn't matter in America. I found that out a long time ago the truth is irrelevant.
This is great. That green book was just white savior nonsense, again.
