When you watch Family Matters reruns and realize how much work he had to do, it's crazy. He played multiple characters, had to wear uncomfortable clothing, and do that voice from teenager to adulthood. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

It was a network comedy with hundreds of cast and crew on set, including his father. These are two people secure in their sexuality. This isn’t a case of a dad co-signing a rape or a molestation. It's awesome to hear his Father stood up for him But it still bothers me at the fact that the Myrtle Urkel character didn't die that day.
Jaleel White as Urkel is one of the all-time great performances from a child actor. Dude was flexing like Jim Carrey or Eddie Murphy in that role, just off the charts inhabiting the character, so much dedication to craft and incredible screen presence.

This is an example of why I do not support these major award shows at all because it's all politics instead of actually awarding those that deserve recognition for their good hard work.

Just started the series as an adult. Literally haven't watched it in decades but grew up watching it (along with Full House, The Fresh Prince, Saved By The Bell etc.). It's pretty dang cool to enjoy it all over again.

Glad his Dad spoke up for him. That’s important in a child’s life.
I was at Warner at the time his show was filming. Every day after they finished an episode or two he’d hop into his brown Range Rover and head to college. I met his father. You could tell he controlled the environment and kept his son on track.
Seeing your son cry...all fun and games is over. When his dad out his foot down, everyone fell in line too.
My father was an alcoholic, but there were plenty of times when he took on the world on my behalf. He wasn't perfect but I always felt like I had someone behind me. Jaleel was fortunate to have such a father. The world sure could use more good men like that.

Point is, when he needed protection, his dad protected him and said he wouldn’t play that character again until it’s on Jaleel’s terms. When he played the character again, it was his choice.

He cried after, and his dad stood up for him, but he said he found that people loved it, and it wasn't as bad as he thought it would be after that episode ended...it doesn't seem like anyone ever tried to force him to do the character again. He's said that he told the writers years later that if they wanted to do it again, he would be for it, and they did.

I dont remember Jaleel for playing a girl. I remember him for playing tv first black super genius nerd. Who loved cheese & polka and most importantly helped pushing out stereotypes of black men & people. 90s black sitcoms really were one of the best moment for us in pop culture.

I might have to rewatch the series (and skip over the first handful of episodes because Urkel was supposed to be a 1 episode character that no one intended to bring back at the time) but while he was very aggressive in showering Laura with affection (save when he dated Myra, but he was still super thoughtful to his friend) I can't recall him ever getting mad at her for rejecting him or dating other guys. He'd hold grudges against those guys, but not Laura from what I remember. Incels do get mad at men for getting laid, but they lay the blame on women for sleeping with anyone else besides them. Steve wanted Laura's affections, but I think it was rare, if at all, he was written as though he felt owed them.

Yea, many people I live/d around in Kansas City and now Tacoma WA dont really understand me when I enjoyed black sitcoms in the 70's and 80's as a white guy. But it truly has nothing to do with color or race. Its about sharing those ethnic cultures with each other (especially around the meals) and being able to understand one another in context. For me in my experiences black culture has changed. Where I grew up in Philly, there were solid white and black families where the father was there raising and disciplining his children. In today's culture not so much, unfortunately!
The show was failing and destined to be cancelled until Jaleel's one-off appearance as Urkel. The Urkel character becoming not only permanent, but a primary focus, saved the show. There's plenty of documented interviews and writings about the other cast member's jealousy. They considered themselves the stars. Well, they were. They were the stars of a failing show that would have never been renewed. It took a real star coming on board, one that committed himself to his performances at that level, to save the whole ship from sinking.

yup was going to comment this too. It was urkel who made the show... I even looked it up as urkel show when returning to watch the series cause I was curios watching my child hood show again. Bring backs memoeries watching it with my brothers lol one of the few things we do together.
@@venomdank965 Yeah, it's clear who the major star was. I was shocked to read about some details about the show in a book called "On My Way to Hollywood" by Roman Castle. It was a complete page-turner and exposed the gritty side of the entertainment industry. A must read for sure!

Dad was absolutely right. It’s one thing to have that conversation with another adult performer, but that responsibility should not be put on a child. If Jaleel’s cast mates had an issue, they should’ve talked to his parents.
Or, at minimum, the writers/producers.
They should have talked to the writers. He was just an actor who was told what to do by the producers and directors. He didn't write the script and probably didn't even have the luxury of saying no if that's what they wanted him to do. Jo Marie was the star of the show. If she had a problem with this character on HER show, she should have had some clout to stop it from happening.
no if the cast had issues they should of talked to the writers that were putting him in a dress in the first place. It's funny, back then that was culturally insensitive. Urkel was the only character as a child when I used to watch this show that I used to care about and was excited to watch. That performance of him turning Bruce Lee against bullies was one of the most memorable performances in the comedy echelon and never forgot even after 30+ years

If you are an adult cast member, and you have a problem with a part that a child actor is GIVEN, go to the writers and directors. You don’t go to the child and basically tell him about your feelings. You don’t put the honor of his entire race on his shoulders versus getting fired, while you keep your job. if what he is saying happened this way, I am so disappointed in them.
I'm with you. BUT this is also Jaleel's impression of that those adults were saying and how they were saying it. It's possible they were giving him some historical perspective on black men in dresses and some of the buffoonery that went along with that. Plus, Jaleel was the undisputed star of the show, right? Nobody would have had a stronger voice "against" the producers than if that kid had been the one saying "I'm not doing that". Yup, it's a lot of pressure for a kid and it's not totally fair to say "Yeah, but he got the big paycheck"...but he did get the big paycheck.

You are SOO wrong! This is the purpose of being an adult. We should know better, especially if you're a black adult male. Jaleel's adult cast members were correct. He's just a kid and don't know the evils of Hollywood yet. Money is NOT everything! Maybe for some. Honor, respect, dignity is much more important and should rank as #1 compared to fame and money. The TV show "Good Times" is a good example of how Hollywood and its writers interfere with its black cast members and a black show. John Amos is probably one of the best black male father figures ever to hit television. He stood his ground before being fired. Dave Chappelle and Denzel Washington talk about this all the time.

Met Jaleel at the airport in Phoenix while I was in college . One of the coolest guys ever we had about a 15 minute conversation and it made me an even bigger fan of his. He definitely didn’t have to be that cool and accessible.
It's so good to hear that. I know I shouldn't invest emotion in people on the screen. But, damn. I have grown up with these people. Invited them into my home. Taken meals with them. You get to know and understand the characters they portray better than you understand most the people in your life.
Then you find out how many are just awful human beings. It's like someone dumped a bag of moldy dog poop on your childhood memories.
Hearing Jaleel is a nice man, well it's kind of like a little hug, reminding me some of those actors were worthy of my adoration and sharing my meals with.

I've been watching Family Matters reruns lately (big fan when I was a kid) and as an adult, it really strikes me how talented Jaleel White actually was, and how amazing of a job he did on the show. He was (/is) deserving of much more recognition than he ever got, and fully deserved Emmys/Golden Globes for his performances.
I watched family matters as kid growing up and he did such an amazing job as Steve Urkel and that voice he did. Michelle Thomas who played Myra really nailed the part of Myra

Jaleel did absolutely hilarious drag that episode. He totally committed. If memory serves he was afraid of his classmates reaction but they loved him for it. He really deserves credit for carrying a lot of unnecessary burdens on the show but in the end it was very clean family fun that entertained so many people.
I remember seeing interviews with Jo Marie and Reginald saying Jaleel was hard to work with. After seeing this, I realize Jaleel was doing more work than anyone in that cast.

I’m not sure *how they expressed their opinions to a kid about yet another Black boy/man in a dress but *that they held that opinion wasn’t wrong (imo.) I think it was hard for Jo Marie to accept the popularity of Jaleel on the show. It was created for her character first and Steve Erkle just took over with his nerd character and personality. I love them all and continue to keep these on my dvr for my grandkids.
am with you on your comment and urkel character on show was supposed to be one off and wasn't supposed to continue the way it continued and when that happened it's what the others couldn't stand because Urkel went from being one off character to being solo character but now days year later they look back and respect why things happened the way they did because him being a solo character helped the show from being taken off air and helped give them more air time on the show

In a different interview he said he was worried about the reaction of his friends at school after the airing of the episode. But everyone really liked it and was supportive. He did a great job in all his roles.

Man, got so much love for Jaleel. He has turned into such a honorable, respectable person. You always hear about child actors using drugs, committing suicide etc. but I love how Jaleel turned out. Nobody’s perfect but props to him.
That was my thought too. In his adult years, Jaleel White has always seemed so grounded and just an all-around nice, normal guy.

I had the pleasure of meeting this young man at a weddind years ago. He struck me as very respectful and respectable. On the show he was funnier than hell and a good comedic actor.

Pity that the adults on these shows had to bully or guilt trip these young actors. I realize that most of these experienced actors were Broadway veterans where they didn't make much money despite their great talents.
When they got their chance to make money on TV, they seemed to want to dim the light of the child actors who rose to the top. I agree with the posters who acknowledged that love or hate the character, Jaleel White killed that role. He was a child genius to play all those characters and his parents kept him in line. A very underrated actor.

I love Unsung but every time I watch there’s like 30 commercials between each segment of the show! It’s crazy . There’s only about 15 minutes of actual show . It’s CRAZY!!!

In 1992 when I was 5, my mother met Jaleel and she told him how much my two sisters and I were big fans of the show and how we loved his character. He thanked her and gave her a hug. She came home that evening and was like “you’ll never guess who I saw” and told us all about it. Thank you brother

Not really. He was good in small doses, but the show really suffered when it became all about him and his wacky sci-fi inventions. Talk about becoming a completely different show. It also did a disservice to the other actors who were talented in their own right. It's not Jaleel's fault. Rather, it's the fault of the producers who exploited him.

Huge fan as a kid, perfect strangers, step by step, boy meets world, hanging with mr. Cooper, full house, family matters.TGIF and the Simpson's before the 4th season was my jam and of course Nickelodeon plus saved by the bell and California dreams on Saturday morning. I can't tell you how impressed I am with the amount of character and self worth Jaleel had to stand up to two adults that he probably held in some esteem. The young man handled that situation like the professional he was/is. His dad raised a good man.

I looked, I couldn't find any articles where Jaleel called out the produceres or director for perving on him. I did find quiet a few that also, like this one, talked about how the other cast members were when his character became popular and their roles diminished.
Also there is the fact that males of all ages and races have been dressing as women for entertainment value, often comedic, since the beginning of theater. Shakespeare even must have been a right ol perv too, The 2 gentlemen of Verona.

Jaleel White did an amazing job on the show with his characters. I'm glad that his dad stepped up and protected his son from more emotional damage.
And his character was not suppose to be a regular he was just going to be an occasional character like Carl's boss Lt. Murtock but he amazed the directors so much with his first appearance they started using him more and more.

@Burke Gerald No, I get the point, which that Jaleel White was subjected to abusive behaviour, and yes I would a readily agree that that’s unacceptable, but the there’s more to the story. Urkel proved to be such a popular character that the producers of Family Matters successfully did with Urkel what the producers of Happy Days tried to do with Richie Cunningham and the Fonz. The character of Judy Winslow was written out of the show and Jaime Foxworth was fired so that the writers could write more episodes about Urkel. The Winslows basically became secondary characters in their own show, which was the actual source of the animosity from some members of the cast.

Jaleel’s performance on FM is one of the greatest in TV history. Never felt like he or the rest of the cast got the credit they deserved for the ground that FM broke.

I saw Jaleel in person years ago and he spoke of this. He didn't mention Joe Marie and Reggie's disdain for the character, but he said that he was actually not too thrilled to be playing the character and said he would only do it ONCE. He also said that he didn't like Stefan Urkelle, the more smooth, charming character either. He said he thought the show worked just fine with him just playing Urkel, despite it becoming more difficult later in the run as his voice was changing and he had to maintain the high pitched voice. One more fact... ABC at one point wanted to change the title of the show to "The Steve Urkel Show" and give Jaleel top billing. Jaleel didn't want this at all, considering he had already pissed off the cast with the character's popularity. He insisted on staying billed last and to leave the show exactly as it was.

Jaleel really doesn't get enough credit for being a physical actor. I think of guys like Martin Lawrence, Lucille Ball, Jim Carey. I really think you have to throw Jaleel in that conversation. He was absolutely great at that slapstick physical comedy and had incredible timing, especially for his age.

I actually saw that episode for the first time a few months ago and I couldn’t stop laughing it was one of the funniest things I have seen. It was so hilarious because he played it so perfect.

He should have never agreed to play a character that could be used as a way to make it funny to laugh at African Americans. Jaleel’s parents were told this by the seasoned actors and they didn’t listen. Then, when Jaleel started to be rude to all of the cast members, the producers told him it was because he was the star of the show. If white people love a black show, it’s usually because you are catering to their perception of African-Americans.

He even resented the character once he realized how much it stifled him and no one could see him as a adult actor because of it.

Jaleel made his own decision to play those characters. He didn’t want anyone to tell him what he couldn’t do as an actor and that included his parents. Now Jaleel is struggling to put his kid through private school because all people see him as is Urkel.

Jaleel was amazing as Steve Urkel. I remember this episode and all I saw was Steves cousin...not Steve. Jaleel should have gotten at least 1 Emmy for his amazing portrayal..I can't imagine Family Matters having the fanbase and impact it had without Jaleel knocking it out of the park each week. This episode though he knocked it way beyond the ballpark..superb job!! Hearing that the 2 adult leads said what they said is gutsy...his dad having his back is the stuff great fathers are made of..1st class dad.
