Rosie threw shade with that articulate backwards comment and Jaleel was so cool with his response. He really showed her up with his professionalism at such a young age. Miss those days. ..
I didn't get the impression that was shade. I think because he was so above average smooth, with his articulation and demeanor, I think that would catch anyone off guard and they would comment on it. Especially being used to his T.V. character. She adored him, it was a legit compliment.
It's very disrespectful. This is an unfortunate reality that black actors have to deal with when they achieve success in thier craft. It's a microagression that people use to undermine black actors, and not give them the respect they deserve. They aren't even trying to be racist. Well most people are, but Rosie isn't. As I know for a fact that Rosie doesn't have a racist bone in her body. She doesn't even realize she's doing it, and she means no harm. But by only calling him by his sitcom character, and not respectfully referring to him by his real name, it undermines him as a black actor, and the black excellence he is. She's not doing it on purpose. It's just been embedded in the culture that black actors don't deserve the same level of respect that white actors get, and she's doing it subconsciously. Will Smith was able to avoid this, because he played Will Smith on the Fresh Prince. Same with Kenan and Kel. But unfortunately the same isn't true for Jaleel White. Who is true black excellence.
I see exactly what you mean and you are correct. However, when referring to a person playing a character in a professional setting (television show in this case) the polite and professional thing to do would be to refer to him as his real name.
That reminds me of the movie "Big Fat Liar." Jaleel White had a cameo as himself in that movie, and he played an actor whom a movie director frequently referred to as "Urkel."
Can't believe I just binged watch Family Matters "2023" seasoned 1 to season 9. I 🩷the 90's. Can't believe I was 5 years old and today it's still something I enjoy watching. I🩷 the cast🥰
A visionary at an early age this one. Still a big Sonic the Hedgehog supporter to this day; I have both the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog tv series on dvd. He mentions in an interview on the dvd set that he didn't want Sonic to sound "black, white, or 'surfer', just hero". To grasp that at such an early age, and want to make that conscious decision for a world wide fan base is a huge contributing factor as to why I still enjoy the character, the franchise, and would like to thank him personally some day.

I couldn't even eat my food that morning and I remember eating sausage and trying to chew it, but my stomach had butterflies and was in knots thinking about going to meet him. I took forever on purpose to eat my food to the point my dad said "we're not going". I was relieved (I was such a loser) and upset at the same time that I wasn't gonna be able to meet him. There was always something about him that I liked. He’s so smooth, cool, honest outgoing and kind. Very talented guy :)
But he lost it. Most people did before phones came out
I was annoyed that Rosie kept referring to Jaleel as Urkel. Seems pretty rude. He was so sweet when he came out.
