Almost the same thing happened with Goodtimes. Florida was Maudes maid, then JJ became the star. Same tjings happened here. It was her show, but Urkle became the star. Im sure she had feelings over it.
This show was a staple in our household when I was a young child. Even my grandparents, who hardly watched television, would tune in to watch the show.
Family Matters changed a lot as it went along. At some point, viewers may have asked, "Does family matter?" Judy disappeared, Rachel was gone except for a couple guest appearances, and Grandma wasn't around. Waldo also disappeared. They shouldn't have recast Harriet. They should've spread those 8 shows throughout the season, having Harriet get a job where she has to travel or something. The network switch and the Harriet switch were the final straws for the show.
Yeah it wasn't the same without the original crew and I believe around the time they moved to CVS the woman who played grandmother Winslow she passed away
I dont know about you, but I actually liked how it ended the way it did. The longest running subplot of the series was Urkel trying his damndest to win Laura's heart despite how much she desperately tried to avoid him (I even enjoyed the time with the 'rival' love interest Myra). Over the years, Laura really opened up to Steve and by the final season they were actually going to get married. And the series finale was pretty much Steve's final obstacle toward that eventual wedding.
There should be a 30-year episode, with carl being retired for 10 to 15 years, and Eddie and married or divorced teenager along with Steve and Laura having either teenagers or college age kids, as well as getting ready to retire from the police force. Rachel being remarried and Ritchie having middle school or early high school age kids, waldo happily married with college age kids. Steve could be working on a covid treatment and both of them being very financially successful.
I just didn't understand why they would not at least try to replace them with someone who looks just like them. They get a completely different looking person and they always replaced them with someone lighter. That's just crazy!
Surprised that you didn't mention the youngest child. They took her off the show and they thought the audience wouldn't wonder what happened to the youngest child.
When the writers introduced Stephan, instead of giving Urkel the girl he so desperately wanted, i knew the show was losing it. When they made Stephan an actual cast member, i turned the show off‼️
Steve having to turn into someone else in order for Laura to like him.instead of being with Myra who accepted him for who he was.should have been the best time to turn off the show.
MAN Family Matters was one of my favorite shows growing up I loved it it was awesome the story of how the show was it was amazing it's crazy how they move Networks Family Matters will be the best always
Jaleel definitely holds in alot about those 9 years spent on the show he undoubtedly was the star and that may have began drama that he or other cast mates dont talk about atleast publicly
Family Matters is my all time favorite. When Jo left I definitely wasn't feeling the new Harriet. Especially that episode when Eddie became a police and got shot or shot at I believe. Jo Marie would have handled that scene so much better. They should have said Harriet went away for work or something instead of replacing her.
It was just awkward and a waste of that woman, Judy Ann’s time. You can’t change a character of 9 years out and think the audience is gonna respond well. The showrunners put that woman in such a rough spot. Not to mention she came into an established show that was a family.
Family Matters really had a place in my heart . They don’t depict us like that anymore in front of a screen . (strong melanated characters with moral , principles and values .)
I feel like the show was great. The addition of Jaleel White may have been intrusive at first, but it worked out for the best. I can understand Jo Marie leaving because she felt that nothing else could be done. Honestly, I would have loved to see Laura and Steve getting married and the show ending that way, but unfortunately, we got left with a cliffhanger and have to guess how the dust settled after that.
People who are on sitcoms should always spread their wings cause the biggest mistake is being to comfortable and not knowing what's next once its over.
It pissed me off when people started calling the show "Urkel" instead of "Family Matters". That's when I knew that things had taken a turn for the worst. The whole "J.J. Evans vs Good Times" debacle had made its comeback. Whoever a student show, due to audience feedback, begins focusing on a singular character, rather than the entire cast, you know that the end is near. Losing focus on a show's original vision is detrimental to its own survival. 🧐
Another thing that they don't talk about is how Judy Winslow went upstairs at the end of the 2nd or 3rd season and never came back down. A whole child disappeared from the family and they didn't even bother to try to explain what happened.
@@InIversal True but what is also very sad is that she has been left out of Family Matters reunions? I know about the whole adult films she did etc to make money after the was let go from the show. She has kept in touch with Shawn Harrison aka Waldo and Daruis McCrary aka Eddie.
I read the comment about her leaving Perfect Strangers a few years ago and it left me wondering who in the cast it was she got the nasty "bite" from. Mark Linn-Baker (Larry) actually guested on the Season 9 "Pain in Harassment" episode as an abusive boss JoMarie tells off - in probably the last episode to fully center on Harriet, and in what was a nice full circle close to the first episode which saw her get laid off and secure a new job with another amazing speech. So, I would assume it wasn't him, unless he came around later or something (I guess it could have been Bronson Pinchot but it'll probably never be known). Anyway I remember that being the last "good" episode of the show that struck just the right balance - its a shame more of the show's later episodes didn't have that.
I have that same question about PS, who was she talking about? I have read that Bronson Pinchot wasn't always nice to people and could be very difficult to work with.
I definitely think Jomarie should should have stayed, if your a actor you have to be grateful to be working. Your on a hit show and your getting paid well and your getting a consistent income. There’s a lot of people who would love to be on a hit show sometimes you have to just stick things out.
*you're i don't normally correct grammar, but you used 'your" wrong so many times. you're = you are your is for ownership (such as your book, your car, your parents)
It was just a few more episodes left I would it would make sense if she left on the seventh season or 8th But to leave with just a few more episodes left she might as well had finished
They always replace a dark skinned actor with a light skinned actor, when black actors start not going with the program. anyone else notice that? they associate defiance with darker skin, and think lighter black people are easier to work with.

I did not watch the show after it moved to CBS mostly because I was at high school football games by then. But it’s not really a big deal that she left the show, she played Harriet for 10 years including Perfect Strangers so that for an actor to play the same character for 10 years straight is very unusual. But also consider the amount of personal time this takes, working 10-12 hours a day, four to five days a week for 8-9 months a year for close to a decade would be exhausting.
I Wonder If Comedy Hype Has A Video On Why Jaimie Foxworth Was Written Out Of Family Matters,It's As If Her Character Judy Winslow Just Disappeared!!! I wasn’t old enough to watch Family Matters as it released, but watching re-runs my mind was blown when they recasted her character. The second actress didn’t even change up the dynamic like Reid taking over for Huber, the replacement actress just didn’t seem like she wanted to be there.
I remember watching Family Matters. It wasn’t a show, I’d try to catch, but I did see it from time to time. I didn’t feel it, but it was kinda funny. Just wasn’t my cup of tea as a teenager.
idk why the cast would be jealous of a character that gave yall a paycheck for 8 years. i don't believe that family matters would have lasted more than a season without the steve character.
I think what people sometimes forget is that she played Harriet Winslow 49 years on Family Matters and three years on perfect strangers that's 12 years of playing the same exact character even on a sitcom that you enjoy as an actress I can imagine it that feels limiting and stifling
Let's all be honest here: The ONLY reason Family Matters made it to season 2, possible 3, was because of the character of Steve Urkel. People like to call it the Steve Urkel Show, but it truly was. Once it went to ABC, for sure, that show was destined to be taken out back and executed. On a side note, I am glad to see Richie cut that nasty, greasy jerry curl mop he called hair, but why was there no picture of Myra? It was nice that the grandmother got one, but Myra was WAY MORE intricate to the show than Richie or Rachel were.
It's SOOO TRUE about the 'Chemistry' on the set.. especially IF an actor had played the role on the series for MANY years. I *DO* find it odd that Producers would bring in a TOTALLY DIFFERENT actress to play the same role as the previous actress, like to think we the audience 'wouldn't' notice. They did that SOOOO many times.. and in the end, we the audience KNEW the show's days were numbered.
Darius is extremely out of touch. Despite how funny Steve was on the show, had it been in todays “game”, the show wouldn’t even have lasted as long as it did. Social media would’ve created a buzz and as always people would jump on the bandwagon but that wouldn’t have been enough.
I remember reading in article right she left family matters and she said bc the shoe turned into Steve and his inventions instead of the “family mattering”

I loved family matters growing up...still do...it never gets old.
I understand what she's talking about, and you can see or notice that the show as a whole was running out of steam from the last two seasons.
I mean they were switching up and writing off different cast members esp ones that made the show funny . After they got rid of rachel and ritchie waldo then harriet left it was dry.
Hahaha, you ain't lying. It was embarrassing watching Urkel getting older and still acting like that.

The show just wasn't the same without the original Harriett...
@Bradley Kemper yeah Waldo was gone and I didn't even realize until after the final season aired! 🤔
Yeah it wasn't the same without the original crew and I believe around the time they moved to CVS the woman who played grandmother Winslow she passed away
@@ladynikkie I thought they moved to Walgreens???
I dont know about you, but I actually liked how it ended the way it did.
The longest running subplot of the series was Urkel trying his damndest to win Laura's heart despite how much she desperately tried to avoid him (I even enjoyed the time with the 'rival' love interest Myra). Over the years, Laura really opened up to Steve and by the final season they were actually going to get married. And the series finale was pretty much Steve's final obstacle toward that eventual wedding.
Yeah gmom got married and moved, Judy dissapeared and the aunt they never explained what really happen
Remember when Jazz said about Aunt Vivian looked different and Will looked up at the camera
Urkel made it a hit show so they should thank jaleel for his contributions
There should be a 30-year episode, with carl being retired for 10 to 15 years, and Eddie and married or divorced teenager along with Steve and Laura having either teenagers or college age kids, as well as getting ready to retire from the police force. Rachel being remarried and Ritchie having middle school or early high school age kids, waldo happily married with college age kids. Steve could be working on a covid treatment and both of them being very financially successful.
Not an bad idea, that could work
I just didn't understand why they would not at least try to replace them with someone who looks just like them. They get a completely different looking person and they always replaced them with someone lighter. That's just crazy!
yup, same as aunt viv
I can tolerate the 2nd actress who played Aunt Vivian. I didn’t like the new Harriett . No offense to the actress
Surprised that you didn't mention the youngest child. They took her off the show and they thought the audience wouldn't wonder what happened to the youngest child.
I know
Right then replaced her with Lil Micheal Jackson. (Richie)
and the most jacked up part about that is later they wanted to adopt 3J

Jaleel definitely holds in alot about those 9 years spent on the show he undoubtedly was the star and that may have began drama that he or other cast mates dont talk about atleast publicly
🎯Agreed!
They were trying to be another Cosby show but it wasn't working. Family Matters wouldn't have survived the first season if Urkel wasn't written in.
Great Lady and human being always humble and relaxed warm as a great well respected auntie everytime we crossed paths.
So we not gone talk about Judy Winslow/Jaimee Foxworth? Poor girl.. everyone wants to forget about her. Sad.
Right!
Judy Winslow wasn't a interesting character..we all just feel bad because what Jaimee Foxworth ended up doing for awhile
Thank you for doing this I don't know all this really wish she stay for the last few episodes

Sometimes ain't nothing next. You have to be lucky as hell to be near a highly successful show.
Reginald and Jo have an impeccable chemistry.
I must not have seen the episodes with the new Harriette because I don't remember her.
They did the show dirty, but throwing it on another channel with no explanation and it quietly died off like most black shows with no decent ending.
Final episodes of season 9.
She moved in with Chuck Cunningham
@@potsdam28 actually it was season 4. She disappeared after playing a flower girl in a wedding.
@@InIversal True but what is also very sad is that she has been left out of Family Matters reunions? I know about the whole adult films she did etc to make money after the was let go from the show. She has kept in touch with Shawn Harrison aka Waldo and Daruis McCrary aka Eddie.
@@InIversal because Richard was the favorite
She also played Hakeem’s mother on ‘Moesha’ during the same time.
Now this is some tea. I never knew this🤯. She was one of my favorite tv moms🤎👑
I agree with her. The show was weird at the end … I miss the first couple seasons. Turned to a science fiction comedy later
yeah in the first few season it actually was about the family.and then Judy disappeared and then outlandish plotlines came.

I definitely think Jomarie should should have stayed, if your a actor you have to be grateful to be working. Your on a hit show and your getting paid well and your getting a consistent income. There’s a lot of people who would love to be on a hit show sometimes you have to just stick things out.

Uh….Frasier Crane?? So, it’s not that uncommon that one person plays the same character for 10+ years.

Facts
First off, We Love Harriet Winslow....but a spin off was *NOT* about to compete with the heat that Urkel was bringing back then.
People can say what they want *now* about his act was "tired, repetitive" but in the 90's....that was must see T.V. it would take a Fresh Prince or a Martin to compete with that! *FACTS*
One of the most underrated tv mom's ever. She was fiesty with Alot of personality
As much as her departure did disrupt the chemistry of the Winslow family, I can’t blame Ms. Payton for leaving when she did, ‘cause she’s totally right about the show’s declining quality at the time. That final season was mad goofy, so I can’t fault her for getting off a sinking ship before it went under.
the show became repetitive. it was always steve being clumsy, causing some chaos, then saying, "did i do that?"
