Thanks for the video Ricky, I think you hit the nail on the head - the complexity, unpredictability and the fun!
I switched to Renoise about 4 years ago and never looked back! Trackers take time to get a fluid workflow (I guess like anything) but once it clicks, it’s just crazy how powerful, interesting and fun making music becomes - especially on just a laptop and headphones. My advice to anyone is don’t try to make you’re usual stuff at first but instead experiment to learn the fx commands and general workflow then it will just click and you’ll have the power! I expect the Polyend tracker to be much the same but more immediate than Renoise, with added bonus of creative limitation, performance features, that fill mode and a radio! I'm so happy this thing exists, can’t wait for mine to arrive!

Honestly using renoise on a laptop in a coffee shop kinda had that feeling all the time. I've been finding it hard to justify this over just a laptop with renoise since I can see how renoise is faster for a lot of this stuff, plus the vsts and other crazy abilities available. However this would be nice to just boot up and not worry about what problems windows or my sound driver might decide to have

Then applied different volume LFO FX to them and created this amazing Detroit gated pad sound. I’m going to try and make a video about it and post it on TH-cam. It's really cool that there are standalone hardware trackers now. In many ways, it's a big upgrade from software trackers. But in many ways, it's also a downgrade. It'd be really difficult to work with just 8 tracks, especially since they're monophonic and shared between samples and midi. I know there are tricks people can do to fit more notes into less space, but they're all just workarounds and aren't necessary when using other tools.
More generally though, I've spent a lot of time using trackers, and although they're really nice in some ways, trackers are also a big part of why I stopped making music. It made music feel too much like work. I didn't get back into music until I found other tools and other workflows which suit me better. So I'm happy to see a new hardware tracker, but I have no plans to get one.

trackers are actually not that different from step sequencers... if you think more, this is very similiar to digitakt, just notes are not going from left to right but from top to bottom... you still have 8 tracks with note per step, you still have mono channels, you still have sound locks and parameter locks (just two per step, though), you have microtiming per step - it's not that different from digitakt, just the flow of notes is rotated by 90 degrees clockwise :-)
btw just recently discovered your channel - it's great ! Even when you're talking about things which i totally know, i'm still enjoying watching it :-) Really really great job !

I watched a couple of your vids can’t remember which is the one you mentioned about the note data spilling into spare tracks when real-time recording. My first impression on this: Lot of menue diving, which is my flow killer. This screen is big enough for graphic based UI and Touchscreen.

Glad we are blessed from the touchscreen! This thing builds upon muscle memory which requires tactile feedback on everything. A touchscreen cannot meet that requirement. By the way, there are tons of good trackers for the iPad if you want a great touchscreen experience.

I had a passive interest before, but I am rather intrigued now. Maybe it's the clicky keys, maybe it's the way the workflow looks like programming, but I feel a little delight watching this workflow.

oh hell yeah, i've got one preordered and i'm so excited to get my hands on this thing!
would be verrry interested in seeing some more videos from you featuring the the tracker, would make the wait for it a lot more bearable lol
also curious as to wether it has any kind of resampling, as that could be used to somewhat get around the 8-track limit on it, not to mention that using that in conjunction with some of the granular/wavetable-y capabilities of the device could get very fun very fast

I nearly preordered one as well.... but I needed a recorder for little sample stuff so I got the h6 and figured by the time this touches the shelves I'll have more zzounds stuff paid off and I'll be able to finance this

If you ever think hexadecimal is complicated just think of the Microsoft paint. It uses hexadecimal for its color pallet :) love the channel!

i own one - great machine, and really easy to learn - especially if u have used FL Studio before - because the pattern view and loading samples on patterns is basically the same, just not in horizontal view but vertical :)

So Ricky one question, I may have missed this. The tracker uses mono samples but my library is mostly 44.1 stereo, does it convert samples to mono on the fly as it imports them to a project or do you need to pre convert to mono?

    •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

aikighost yes it does convert to mono while importing from sd

If it had a battery it would be a nice alternative to Renoise from the couch. A power bank and some velco kind of solves that, I guess. I feel like the tracker workflow of Renoise/OpenMPT/ScreamTracker/OctaMED/etc is like left-handed scissors of DAWs. For most people it's terrible and awkward, but for some people it perfectly suits how they approach compositions.

Thanks for this vid, Enrique . I JUST bought a Digitakt but have had the Polyend Tracker on my radar since it was introduced. Definitely want one now. FWIW I have used Renoise on and off with limited success I think I’d work much better on this piece of gear.
