    • @mortisCZ
      @mortisCZ 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Janabroderick Well Mayflower arrived to American shores like two weeks after our great military defeat in religious/civil war later known as 30 year war. That war was like fourth or fifth civil war in our written history and we've spent another 298 years under the rule of Austrian royal family who forced their religious views to our society. Only the tragedy of First world war ended their empire.Then we've been occupied by fascists and communists just during 20th century.21st century started better but we'll see.
      US has a dark history but much of it was to some degree diluted with hope of building and moving up in the world. Their history might be more concentrated in sucess and failure and cruelty which changes the outlook.
      Hey and there is really nothing sacred here. Religious communities tend to have dark humor limited to some topics.

    Here in Czechia we prefer true, long relationships.. like when your friend every month show you new girlfriend/boyfriend, it starts to be annoying, and we think like "he's great friend, but he can't stay in relationship, Mění holky/kluky jak ponožky" - That's what we actually saying a lot... And it's the same with showing your girlfriend/boyfriend to parents. When we start dating someone, we don't often tell this everybody immediately, but we trying to know each other, and thinking, if this relationship could be great. And after some months, when we are convicted about our relationship, we start showing the rest of each others friends, and important - to parents. This is my point of view, of course it can be somewhere a little bit different. btw, nice video :)

    As for the gender roles in the household, my BF (we are both Czech) loves to operate the machines in our home, so he loves to use the washing machine, use the dryer, use the dishwasher, use the "robot" vacuum cleaner :-D That's not much else for me to do around the apartment :) So I cook from time to time (he likes to cook too), put the clothes that can't be dryed in the dryer on the drying rack, fold it, water the plants, wash dishes that shouldn't be washed in the machine, swipe the floors. I think we have divided it quite equally... It's also about what you are willing to do. You can "teach" your husband, that "no, it's not 1950s, you have to do the work too around the house."
    He is not much into gardening, I on the other hand love it, so I turned his balcony (where only his rusting bike was located) into a jungle. However, my brother (40yo, IT specialist) is in his garden every day, planting, tending to the garden all the time. My father too.
    Drinking is a thing in the Czech Republic. My family however is very "dry". Drinking is not a thing for us, we have a glass of wine for special ocassions (birthdays usually), but that's it. But friends and my BF's family drink much more. In my household (me living with my BF) we drink very rarely (because of my approach to drinking). My BF got used to it quite easily.

    Dark Humor is like food.. Not everyone has it.
    Also the moving in is usually because of the housing market. It's usually pretty hard to get a proper nice flat, or house, by yourself, with your usual job. I'm talking a store clerk or a receptionist. In these jobs rent can be more than 3/4 of your pay. So it's easier, and more economical, to share your housing with someone, be it your partner, or a room-mate.

    You are right in many ways.
    Nowadays I can observe people in bad life situations and I am amazed. They help each other. Partnerships are stronger if it survives first month and you have a chance to look at the people around.
    I thought family focus is a tradition in few families, but now I can see really strong bonds amongst many families. Even friendship bonds proved to be good (at least in my case and what I can see around).
    Nowadays due to some family problems (possible near death) I found out my bonds are fortunately strong and they help me with preparation for unwanted situation.

    I am watching this to compare the lifestyle of czech citizens to those of czechs in America (mainly nebraska where most czechs settled) there are similarities and differences for sure but it does seem like traditions and culture has come across with immigrant families. My grandparents may have not passed down the language, but they passed down the culture. I have pulled my boyfriend into my culture, he is Korean but doesn't have strong ties like I do and is very excited to now be a Czech man. He fits in very well

    So for the gender equality in Prague for manager positions etc.
    Some Czech men find some Czech women in power very intimidating so they look for wifes that can be more in this gender roleplay. So in the end they end up marrying Russian women that are happy to provide this and get in Europe from Russia. However, most of these marriages don't last very long thanks to the differences and expectations. I have so many stories about this.

    • @ArepasforDinner
      @ArepasforDinner  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I bet... I'm ok with gender roles... As long as everyone is happy doing it... Can't force a woman to work and give up having kids if that's her goal and her husband's... But in general I see more inequality than in my home country... (There's a lot of inequality there too) but you will never see a mom working and then also taking care of the home... NEVER if she works full time or dad and kids do it all with mom or they hire someone to help (Depending on how much money they make)

    I am very much surprised of how accurate this video is. A few things stood out a bit tho. Namely, sports are quite a big thing for boomers and students just not the millenials. (Especially football and hockey.)
    The big wedding is almost never a man's dream, they just dont complain, when the girl wants it. It might have been a goal for both back during the communist regime and before then, but nowadays it is not very common for a guy to want a big wedding.
    Aside from these few points all of it applies to me and pretty much every Czech guy I know.

    • @ArepasforDinner
      @ArepasforDinner  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have to disagree in the wedding part. I see nowadays women underestimate the desire of the guy for the wedding. Yet I’ve being to quite an amount of Czeh weddings (I’m on that age) and the groom enjoys that day like nothing else in this world. Perhaps also the weddings I’ve attend are not extremely Czech traditional... And look more like a huge party than a wedding old school style

    • @vulgoalias4050
      @vulgoalias4050 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ArepasforDinner Sorry for my poor phrasing. What i was saying, is that the men usually do not want the wedding to be that big even though they want it to happen, but if it was up to them it would be a much smaller event in most cases. But then again, when the wedding actually happens, they enjoy it as much as possible even though they might have preferred fewer guests.
      I would have to agree, that there are not lots of traditional Czech weddings, maybe some fragments of Czech culture sneak into it, but generally it is just a big party with a little ceremony before, which women love and men endure.
      One could say a lot of what Czechs view as local traditions has disappeared from our lives. Moravia is a little bit more traditionalist and in general the rural areas too, but since villages and small towns are dying out, the traditions are dying out as well.
