DIESEL vs HYBRID - Which is more economical in real world conditions?

- Here we test two second hand cars against each other, a 10 year old hybrid and a 7 year old diesel, to see which gives more miles per gallon, and which is quicker in acceleration, in real world driving conditions.
The cost per litre for the Shell garage on the motorway test was £1.589 for petrol and £1.759 for diesel, for the city test using the Esso garage it was £1.599 for petrol and £1.855 for diesel.
Thanks to Colin for donating the hybrid Auris and to Michael for donating the diesel Astra.
Interesting comparison....I did skip a little bit, but was there any reference in the overall cost calculations to the Diesel fuel costing more than Petrol.
Thanks for your comment David. I forgot to include the costs. For the city test the costs were £2.85 for the hybrid and £2.78 for the diesel. For the motorway test the costs were £11.36 for the hybrid and £10.78 for the diesel. I've updated the description to include the costs per litre at each garage.
Thank you, that was enlightening. I prefer hybrid cars mainly for reliability, economy (although that is a little debatable now), security from Range Anxiety, smoothness and quietness.
Had a vw golf had nuffin but problems brought a toyota corolla hybrid had it 8 years never a single problem
Was the Golf diesel?

I currently own both options and while my hybrid is a performance car, and far faster than my pedestrian diesel. The thing that I like most about its drivetrain is manouvering and low speed driving on electric only power. It feels a lot more refined and socially responsible than the noise of a diesel through our small streets.
I've notoced a couple of hybrid taxis filling up on LPG near me which must be increadibly cheap to run.
My brother used to have an Auris hybrid which was converted to LPG, it was cheap to run at the time, about 85p/litre.
Diesel is better for highway, hibrid is better for only city driving. Not in consumption, in reliability.
I find driving a hybrid is much more relaxed somehow. But am a bit disapointed that it doesn't really beat a diesel for economy/
Not really a fair comparison as there is simply more energy in a liter of diesel than in petrol. Imagine what Toyota could do with a hybrid diesel! There is 38MJ of energy in 1 liter of diesel and 31.5MJ of energy in 1 liter of petrol. That is over 20% more energy for diesel.
Thanks for your comment, I hadnt realised the actual figures for energy density. Are you an engineer? I agree a hybrid diesel would be so efficient, I think only Mercedes offer a hybrid diesel currently.
The vauxhall astra is well known for dpf, egr problems and the worst of all timing chain which is a major job
This is my Astra in the video and the only issue it's had is the timing chain. It cost about £1500 to repair and the engine is just like new. However, it lasted 126,000 miles before the chain needed replacing.
Keep up the good work 🤘
Appreciate that. We may have an LPG vs Petrol video if I can persuade the owner of the Insignia.
You take the electric and I'll take the diesel and race you New York to Los Angeles. Which is more practical in real world conditions?
Prefer diesel, no battery degradation issues and plenty of grunt for the hills.
Based on the results, I guess Diesel Turbo is king interms of MPG.. and it has more torque.
by the time the hybrid battery needs changing THE CAR IS WORTHLESS.... JUNK
New genuine replacement battery for those is actually reasonable. Plus there's no alternator, starter motor, clutch, less brake wear
My brother changed the battery on his Yaris hybrid a couple of months ago. Total was circa £1200 and that's all the work plus battery and ancillary bits.
Cheaper than the engine rebuild plus timing chain replacement on my previous car 2017 Jaguar XF.
Total for that was 8k at only 76k miles.
Granted the Ingenium engines are shyte!
