    Hey Steve, I really enjoyed this walk with you. Never been over to Manoel Island before. The fort looked super impressive 🤩 and the old buildings at the end looked fascinating. It’s a shame they’ve fell into disrepair. I think the black box you mentioned at 14:35 and there was another at 21:35 are pest control boxes (rat bait boxes).

    A "MANOEL ISLAND" REVEAL INDEED - an EXCELLENT scenic & historic walk of the island 🌊 ⚔ 🇲🇹 🛡 🇬🇧 👑.
    PROSET Steve, I worked in the area for a few years in early 70s and never "walked" round the island.
    Those 'black boxes" @ 14:35 etc look like Pest Control stations (poison for vermin). The Football ⚽ pitch used to be there @ 8:20 🤔 . (Re "Bingemma Fort", Malta Squatters' Rights are similar to UK)
    THANKS STEVE 🚶 🎥 👏.
    Cheers 👍 🇲🇹 ♥ 🇪🇺 ™

      @@EnglishmaninMalta Also, meant to say the hospital is/was "Lazzaretto Isolation Hospital 🏥". That football ⚽ pitch used to be a fixture venue for what they used to call 'The Reserve League ".
      Cheers 👍 🇲🇹 ♥ 🇪🇺 ™

      Joseph Sammut sounds like a native Maltese name. I was a RN Petty Officer Mechanician in the late Fifties and worked with some of the best RN sailors who were Maltese locals. I was closely involved with them as they staffed at St Angelo where I was based, all the Island's fleet motor boats, ferry boats and MFVs. The electrical systems were my responsibility, also support for the tugs Reward and Mediator and the barboat, HMS Layburn. Loved my time in Malta and just had such great support from my Maltese friends.

    When I lived in Malta, I'm not sure about this but I recall that there was some Royal Navy stuff on the Island. I was based in HMS St Angelo and that was in 1965. and I remember that I did visit there several times doing navy stuff but for the life of me I can't remember what but it might have been a transit barracks. During ww2 it was where the submarines were based, HMS Phoenicia actually. When we went back on holiday in 1990 there was an artisan glassmaker and we bought a couple of pieces which we still have, There is a lable on one which identifies it as "Phoenician Glass Malta". As we crossed a bridge to get to it it could only have been onto Manoel Island and the old naval base name related to the glass. Long time ago and memories fade.

    • @EnglishmaninMalta
      @EnglishmaninMalta  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am sure there were the troops over there, and of course the fort, lots of history, yes there was a glass company there, but closed down now

      There used to be a mini-submarine base there and a Royal Naval divers School.

    Really interesting walk Steve. Beautiful views over to Valletta. Would be nice to see the island developed but hopefully keeping the skyscrapers to a minimum. The black boxes on the ground are for vermin btw. Don't know why the ceramics hasn't had so many views, you made a great video and Jessica was lovely.
