  • Hello all, this time we are in Manuel Island and we going to explore a place called Lazzaretto Quarantine hospital . First we will explore it's extensive underground tunnels and them the upper part.
The Lazzaretto (Maltese: Lazzarett) is a former quarantine facility and hospital on Manoel Island in Gżira, Malta. It is a complex of various buildings dating back to between the 17th and 19th centuries. Most of the structures still exist, although they are in a bad state due to damage sustained during World War II and over 30 years of abandonment. It is planned that the Lazzaretto be restored.
Hope you enjoy, and if you know any info bout this place feel free to comment below.

thank you for making this journey and sharing with us. i came to watch this after recently discovering that sadly my grandmother passed away in this hospital in 1934 in isolation with scarlet fever. Thank for being respectful with the history of this building and it's past occupants.

Amazing hidden history. The mind boggles that so much is hidden away and not restored. I get fed up with listening to 'talking heads' saying no money, no money but they all have lovely yachts surrounding the island. It was lovely seeing it Boys, Great stuff!!!💗

From Wikipedia: "The Lazzaretto reopened as a hospital in 1949, and remained so until the departure of the Royal Navy from Malta in the 1970s. It was subsequently abandoned, and it fell into a state of disrepair.[4]
Since its closure, part of the Lazzaretto was also used as a shelter for abandoned dogs.[4]"

Meaning of Lazzaretto: A lazaretto or lazaret is a quarantine station for maritime travellers. Lazarets can be ships permanently at anchor, isolated islands, or mainland buildings. In some lazarets, postal items were also disinfected, usually by fumigation. This practice was still being done as late as 1936, albeit in rare cases.

In the early 1950's I was isolated in the then Lazzarett hospital because of the prevailing Polio outbreak and a doctor's suspicion that I had Polio.
I remember very clearly, I wasn't yet 3 years old, being tied to the bed's headrest, like Christ to the cross.
My mother used to say that I was kept there for a whole month and nobody was allowed to visit me. Only my spinster aunt was given a special permission to stay with me due to my very btender age.
Luckily it transpired that I didn't have Polio.
