A bit like the experience I had at a gathering with Eckhart Tolle, although there was no official Q&A, I venture to say it's impossible to be in a room with 800 people and not acknowledge that there are minds that are busy forming questions. Then Eckert precedes to speak uninterrupted for 2 hours, with no agenda no script, indeed no set length. Spaciousness is not necessarily the "goal"but I believe it does arise.
With Rupert, in my experience each utterance is divinely spontaneous. The very act of attempted control is counterintuitive. (Except of course for technical difficulties or earthquakes-- it was a minor one but nonetheless the room gasped as one-- or perhaps unintended violence which must be dealt with somewhat clinically, with protocols and such. And there's whole covid mask situation.) So I think that this particular speaker was in fact trying to control the narrative and Rupert has an exquisitely fine-tuned ability to embrace this as part of the process.

    A twist on a classic.
"Before one studies Zen, mountains are mountains and waters are waters;( climate change is climate change) after a first glimpse into the truth of Zen, mountains are no longer mountains and waters are no longer waters (climate change is no longer Climate change); after enlightenment, mountains are once again mountains and waters once again waters. (climate change is once again climate change) ~Dogen "
This came to mind as the lady grappled to understand what changes when we wake up from the illusion that everything is separate and solid.. Everything is the same. A Mack truck will always follow the laws of nature and destroy a wall when it ploughs through it.
It's hard to put into words. Somehow everything is seen as luminous emptiness in the middle stage, everything is made of the same 'goo'. The illusion of separateness is seen through and yet a tyre feels like a tyre and a brick feels like a brick. It's not that climate change is an illusion, and/ or
there's no point in responding to it. That response belongs to Existence and some will be moved to act and others won't according to their nature and conditioning, which is not separate from Totality or 'ours' to control. The 'whole' (holy) hologram IS the Totality/ Reality of Formlessness as form.
Rupert says is soooooo much better but I felt compelled to try to have a go at this one. 🙏🌻

My fear when watching this video was that some would think the fight for climate change, or any activism for that matter, is absolutely meaningless because, "why do anything when all is consciousness?". I will reiterate what I said to that person here because I do not want my friends mislead:
We must be exceedingly careful of the sly ways the ego and or its habits take form in our lives, actions, and moral standings. This is quite a pernicious view point. The world being an illusion does not mean it is not real, this is not a path of denial. Climate change is a real issue, war is a real issue, poverty is a real issue, they are ultimately illusory, but experiences genuinely feel they are suffering. Their suffering, though illusory, is very much real. However, one cannot hope to clean the dirt off of a table when your hands are also muddied. For this reason, enlightenment / awakening is the greatest service one could ever hope to give. Some may not be inclined towards activism-- this is fine. As Rupert always quotes from Thomas Aquinas, "Love and do whatever you want". One is not wasting time fighting to improve climate change, or lobbying for peace, or protesting animal abuse, or doing their part to feed the hungry / needy. When inclined to do so; when coming from the place of suchness; of the isness one is-this is love- it is not a waste of time. The thought, "waste of time", in this context is the ego speaking. There's no time to waste. It is easy to veer off in this journey my friend, please exercise caution; thought has ways of mendaciously masquerading as truth. As we rest more in this isness, such specious costumes are denuded and thought truly becomes the tool- not the master.

Beihad-Aranyaka Upanishad: "The immortal is veiled by the real. The Spirit of life is the immortal. Name and form are the real, and by them the spirit is veiled."
Bradharanhyaka Upanishad: "Breath is immortality: name and form are truth. The breath is hidden by them."
The lesson is that you have a Self that is awareness and life, and you are not the thoughts (of name and form) or the sensory perceptions of the environment, the latter being which people generally experience and which causes them emotional and mental problems and the former (realizing you are the Self) is the detachment and the solution of your problems

Rupert’s take on the fundamental nature of human perceptual and thinking filters is valid but I want to point out that - as Iain McGilchrist succinctly states - the way we attend to the world changes the world we find. The two hemispheres bring into being two different phenomenological worlds. I contend that a non-dual, integral perspective simultaneously attends to both worlds (the one and the many) and therefore is aware of much much more and sees much more clearly the wholeness of reality.

This woman brings up a good point. We worry about climate change, but that is also just an illusion. If matter doesn’t exist, only awareness, then climate change also doesn’t really exist. And war too, for that matter. Obviously, if we were all awakened to our true selves, we couldn’t harm anything or anyone, including the environment. So, awakening to our Self needs to be our one and only goal. Taking this a step further….We are wasting time being activists, it’s just busy-making. I feel that Rupert avoided this last, controversial point.
And sure….we “see” the same things in the world but it’s from a totally different perspective. We “see” (or sense) them inside of ourselves…. “they” are us.

    • @Stefan69whatever

This is probably half true. Awakened humanity would probably stop doing any further harm. But the physical state of the planet would not miraculously change. It might to some extent. But then again it might not. Who are we to say. What Rupert says is also not quite true as some minds can clearly see beyond the physical realm. So they are not all precisely configured the same.

If there were a billion Ruperts maybe there would be less climate change due to less greed and consumption.
However, there would still be asteroids, viruses, old age and death. As the Buddha said, this instability is baked in.
I think much of the fuss around climate change is due to a strong belief in separate beings who are responsible for this (unlike asteroids etc). This creates guilt and anger and all the polarisation we see along side all the other social justice issues. We would rather fight these causes than face our own awakening and face the inherent suffering that is part of existence.

A hundred percent. People would be conscious in their day to day life. I would guess the concept of money would go redundant too, as the conscious beings would create a better way and take only what is needed for their consumption.
Life would support this, it would be an ideal apparent world. Challenges would be for those who are still not ripe, otherwise for a perfect being all would be same.

In the absence of ignorance, we do not perceive the world, and we do not receive others as separate from our self. As a result, there is a gentle flow in our relationship with the world as well as in our relationship with each other.
Sages appear to remind us that reality is one and that when we are hurting somebody else we are hurting our self.

While I would not claim to be "awake," I do feel I have progressed on that path. When I was an agnostic with leanings towards atheism, I accepted the world as it was. There was good and bad, kindness and selfishness, fear and hate. Things just were, and there was no explanation in science or physics as to why there is such cruelty, such suffering. I thought it was a byproduct of life. Now, as I "awaken" I find myself frustrated, more confused, more disappointed in a system, a god, a source that would create this space where such hatred and suffering thrives, persists and by all accounts (history) has persisted since we came to be. There seem to be many accounts of poeple who have crossed over temporarily (NDEs, OBEs, Meditation, etc.) where they were instructed by guides, higher selfs, Jesus, or God that they needed to return, as they still had "work" to do. Some have resisted, requesting to stay and are told they have a choice, but then are "convinced" to return, others are just sent back to their bodies against their will, injuries miraculously healed, cancers cured. If I am honest, for me, awakening has not been to see all the love and beauty in the world. I already was aware of that most of my life. Awakening for me has shown me a system that perhaps needs or requires fear, hate and suffering, or at the very least, seems unable to make any progress towards making experience more about love. I spent my career looking at systems that were not working as intended. One of my jobs was to figure out why. Looking at life on Earth as a system, I see a system that is falling considerably short of a potential that it should have, that as lives and experience are accumulated, the system improves with time, learning from its vast array and volume of experiences. If we are all one, why are we not collectively learning and growing from all of our experiences?

I think the example of the orange tinted glasses is being stretched to breaking. Every advaita teacher cautions against this pitfall - don’t ride a horse to its death !
Classic advaita gurus teach with examples of gold / jewels, clay / pot, sea / waves.
    Like -
Goldsmith tells assistant - bring me some gold from the storeroom. Man goes and reports back - there is no gold in there. Goldsmith - what do you mean there is no gold in there, what did you see? Man - I just saw a lot of bracelets, rings, necklaces... Goldsmith points out - but they are all gold, they appear as bracelets, rings, necklaces in form, name and utility, they are all just gold. Man is like - oh ok, gotcha!
Did anything change ? Did all the bracelets, rings, necklaces melt together in front of the man’s eyes into one solid mass? No!. Both the goldsmith and the man do experience the form, name and utility of the same gold in different appearances as bracelets, rings, necklaces. The unrealized fashionista looks at them as jewels in their form, name and utility. The goldsmith has the realisation that they are all just gold. Only gold has Independent Existence and Substance hence called Real. Gold Jewels have only dependent existence dependent on gold, and there is no substance apart from gold, hence called Appearance of gold. Turning gold into a ring has not added a single milligram to the weight of the gold, so the jewels cannot be ‘counted’ as another apart from gold. Thus there is No Second apart from gold.
If you don’t like this, we can go to primary school physics. When we were in school at around age 10, we learned that everything, all atoms, are made up of electrons, protons, neutrons (say EPN). This was a pointing out of a truth. We had the new knowledge of this deeper reality, but nothing changed in our sensory experience. We did not begin to see the nano particles of EPN in everything we looked at. We still continued to see the table, chair, wall, as themselves. And just as well, or we would have tried to go to school on the sofa, eat the school bus for breakfast etc.
You continue to see the appearances, but have the new understanding of the deeper reality behind it. This is the first step in Advaita path.
The famous saying about advaita that gurus like to repeat to the students - you only gain what you already had forever, and you lose only what you never had !

In Non duality, Existence is The Only Reality. For many people, “non existence” would mean the void of Buddhism (certain streams).
Probably due to this loss in translation, with people misinterpreting words used deliberately or innocently, Advaita teachers choose words with more circumspection. Thus in Advaita, flower is not “non existent”, but it is ‘dependant existence”. It has no independent existence, it is only an Appearance of a much deeper Reality of Existence. Not existence of you, me, flower, galaxy etc, but Existence itself per se. You can deny the existence of a lot of things, but you cannot deny Existence itself per se. There is no way to say “Existence does not exist”. Advaita never doubts that you experienced something; it only questions what you experienced. Advaita will not dispute you if you call the jewels as ring, bracelet, necklace, IF AND AS LONG AS you recognize that fundamentally in substance and reality it is only gold; - and ring, bracelet, necklace are only its form, name and utility.

Your perceptions DO change. 1. You realize that everything is ONE thing, and that it is nothing.
    2. Colors can change, and other sensations CAN change because reality is fluid and you CAN tap into it.
Different people's bodies are influenced by enlightenment differently. Some people gain what is called Sidhhis/Spiritual Abilities.

What is the point of all this talking Rupert? Do you think talking is going to wake people up or are they just going to keep coming back for more? How many people in the audience do daily practice which is the only way to liberation.

If this guy were awake, he wouldn't be talking about "awakening" -- as if human development and human consciousness ever stop developing. Anyone who pretends to talk from the mountaintop is actually in a number of ways not above, but below the average level of awareness. Yes, there is a spiritual world, but there is no final enlightenment, there is only eternal learning. Come down from your guru-like pretensions and join modern consciousness.
