Absolutely no! Tenkaichi 3 felt complete on release. Sparking Zero feels like it shipped in a beta state at times. The local multiplayer was clearly added at the last minute: without mods you can only play in the Time Chamber, and only a player at a time can select their characters. The main menu (or menus?) is super inefficient: rather than the great true to the source material 2D art that BT3 had, SZ goes for full 3D environments for the main menu that make the menu a slog on slower hard drives. Also rather than have 1 comprehensive menu screen with all the options like BT3, SZ has half a dozen screens that you need to move through to find the thing you were looking for. Finally, the unlock criteria for alternative paths in the story mode feel both very unclear and/or extremely hard to pull off most of the time. Unlike BT3, were What If scenarios felt more accessible in comparison. Almost like BT3 was thoroughly playtested, while for SZ they said let’s ship now, we’ll patch later. Now I understand the realities of gamedev in 2024, and that modern graphics require more time compared to the development work required back in the day for BT3… but still, BT3 felt a finished game to me, SZ does not.
I completely get where you’re coming from. BT3 definitely set a high bar in terms of feeling polished and complete right out of the gate. It really nailed that balance of accessibility and depth, which seems like it’s missing in SZ based on your points. The reliance on full 3D menus does sound like a step back, especially if it sacrifices usability for style-classic “form over function” issue. And yeah, the whole “ship now, patch later” mentality is frustrating. I understand the pressures of modern game development too, but it’s tough when a game doesn’t feel finished at launch, especially when it’s trying to live up to the legacy of something like BT3. Hopefully, they take the feedback seriously and patch it into a more polished state, but it’s disappointing to have to rely on post-launch fixes for what should’ve been there from day one.
To be completely fair, local multiplayer was not planned for this game and they warned us they'd add it due to popular demand but the game wasn't optimized for it.
BT3 had one huge advantage 17 years ago. They didn’t have to deal with “modern gaming” meaning when games were made back then they were made with passion. I miss games that released were actually finished and full of content it’s rare now days
SZ right now is one of my favorite games but after going back and playing bt3, i still cant in good faith put it over bt3. It definitely has the potential to be better, they just gotta add, fix and tweak certain things to truly make it great, great analysis
Thanks man! It was a difficult decision to make between the 2, ultimately I really enjoyed the gameplay in SZ but BT3 will always have its place in my life
Sparking Zero is low effort. BT3 actually puts its hardware to the limit. Sparking Zero just has Kid Goku for OG DB, that's a joke. Comparing the 2 games is just disrespectful.
I think the biggest thing kinda hindering Sparking Zero was just how it was released. If I’m mistaken, they wanted it released alongside Daima, leading a lot of things to be left a bit unpolished. If they would have just let it bake in the oven for a few more months, I don’t doubt that it would’ve been the greatest DBZ game to ever release. BT3 overall just feels like a completed package and you could tell it had a lot of love put into it
Yeah, I definitely thought there would be more to it. I kind of take back calling it “more of a complete package” in this vid. I don’t think I phrased that correctly lol
Two things Sparking Zero dropped the ball HARD on: 1. An insanely limited offline multiplayer. People saying the PS5 can’t handle split-screen is ridiculous, there have been FANMADE mods for this with way more options. 2. Mediocre online responsiveness. It’s not the worst thing if this was some other game but in this game the timing of your inputs matter a LOT.
I have arguments for the split screen part, 1.The Mods are only exclusive to PC, Other Consoles would explode if they could mod it in too 2.The Mod may seem good at first but youll notice that the game actually lags when you try to split screen in other stages

And 2. Not registering inputs. Like when I press the supers button and it brings up the super list on screen and everything, but my character still just throws a regular punch or ki blast anyway instead of doing a super. Or when i launch a character away and want to follow up with a super but my character just keeps doing vanishing attacks.
