He was incredible , however i do believe Julian Bream was in a league of his own . Noone touched Bream's musicianship. The way he got so many different tone colours simultaneously was phenomenal .
Segovia has this uncanny way of coaxing out every detail of the instrument, and his malleable phrasing and tempo imbue in his pieces a distinct individuality that is always recognisable as Segovia's.
I will always be surprised by the way the guitar i able to "conceptualize" and "visualize" the music. There is something magical about this instrument. If you want to "see" the music, listen good guitar music.
George, that's what I like about Bream too. I also reference him when I'm confused on tempo and rhythm. He is usually true to the timing, and all the expression is in the colour and tone. Sometimes it grates, but the contrast is part of expression.
Quite a discussion! I'm not a musician, but watching Christopher Nupen's wondrous 'The Song of the Guitar' made me an admirer of Segovia -- not only for his playing, but because I felt the sincere soul of the man coming through the music: the film was shot in the Alhambra Palace -- I wonder if anyone would be able to upload it sometime? 🙏
Remebering that these letters made Villa compose the etudes... and, correct me if i am wrong, THESE Segovia accepted. Sorry if I commit any english mistakes.
Segovia would not have been the first guitarist to "rework parts"...what is the problem...and this is the best version of this,,,Segovia nails this 'romantic music' as he always does. he may well come under scrutiny today but......even Williams says he had the best 'GUITAR' sound...I play a Smallman at times....and it is not much good for SPANISH ROMANTIC MUSIC...listen to Segovia for this style.
if villa-lobos composed this he must be a great guitar player. villa lobos was more talented than segovia, segovia's work was concentrated in adapting music and being an interpreter. his compositions are not important. maybe he reworked some pieces but he couldn't touch the soul of those pieces. how the hell could segovia say that villalobos isn't a great guitar player'?? he is fuckin famous because of his compositions! anyway, amazing performance! he was the center of the classical guitar, yes. he knew ALL the pieces for the guitar.!! the one who archived them.
His musicianship is unmatched combined with unique colors and his unique sound ,it is a dream.

This is the best version of the prelude
I love this piece. It is one of my favourites to play.

So sweet.
My brother still practices.
30years ago I told him: just as God.
Never listens.
Sweet monolits.
yep, from all prefomances I've heard so far this one is surely the best and the most balanced

This version of the prelude might actually be the absolute best there is.
a honest player of music /of his time relaxing playing
So perfect 👌🏼

I agree that this is the best version of the prelude by Villa-Lobos.
And to think that he despised these preludes in private correspondence.
this id the definitive version no one else can compare
Do you not think Bream's rendition rivals this?
Sergio Abreu's (brazilian concertist- "duo abreu" and luthier) is also fantastic. Search for it and it will surprise you. Cheers.
very spiritual
Ok, thanks for the information.

And from words of Andre Segovia Villa-Lobos was a great composer!

omg this piece is so purple
audio not in e minor...
I didn't know that. Do you have a safe source of information?
what about it?
2:00 this would've been such a good sample for one of dilla's raw guitar focused tracks
it is Segovia??!
listen to raphael rabello, after, tell me what's the best version =)
Segovia is definitely a master guitarist... but that vibrato...

that's why he said he wasn't a good player. he never said anything about his compositions.
Estudio sin Luz is probably the only piece Segovia composed that's somewhat interesting.
Absolutely not the best version. Narcisso yepes version is perfecr
In my opinion, Evangelos Assimakopoulos plays this piece better...
one of the best examples of why segovia is extremely overrated
