- I use the LG C2 42 OLED TV as a Computer Monitor, and to help protect it from Burn-In I automated it to automatic with a motion sensor to protect it when I'm away from the computer.

A chair pressure sensor opens up a lot of automation. Also, you don't need a fancy pressure sensor for it either. Your weight will cause travel on the chairs piston, so a magnet read switch is enough. Just make it wireless.
This sounds like a smart idea
Not ideal for a standing desk
Recharging chair does not sound like an epic idea, also, that means you can use the pc while not sitting.
Hmm, standing desk. How sensitive are those vibration sensors and their reactive time outs. Some people don't move much, but the mouse and the keyboard will vibrate the desk one can be installed under the desk. Downside trains, heavy traffic, low flying aircraft, that guy who thinks everyone wants to hear his music but only the bass of it as he drives by will also trigger it if too sensitive. If there is a hydraulic thin and wide pressure sensor that can go under the floor mat that the chair and when standing will trigger, then you're good to go. But ya guys, he brought up the pressure sensor in his chair and didn't mention a standing desk, so I didn't give a solution for one. He can add a pressure switch to the swing arm of his cockpit recliner lounging desk that triggers 3/4s through its closing. (Figured I get ahead of that one). I have no solutions for the bed... a laptop? Sorry, I have an 11 month old that doesn't like when Daddy leaves the room, and I'm a bit irritable.
Pressure sensitive floor Mat? Or rug?🤔
This is absolutely awesome, every video you make on the oled tv makes me want one more. Burn in is one of the primary downsides and I have already been brainstorming ways to get around it before I get one of these panels, but this solution is so awesome I might just pull the trigger soon.
I had a C1 for 18 months. No burn in after hundreds of hours of use.
I also had my C1 since 24 months, zero burn mark for regular usage daily.
I have got a samsung qn90, it's not an oled, but still great contrast and picture quality, you won't have to worry about burn in or degradation... :)
As the above mentions have said. I’ve had the C1 for about a year and a C2 as a work display for 3-4 months no. Zero issue with both and I use both daily over 6hrs each!
burn in is really a non issue for oleds. ive had mine for almost 2 years, with HEAVY use for mainly gaming, and i havent had a single instance of burn in. the only slightly annoying thing that occasionally happens to me is sometimes i get weird image retention, but it always goes away within seconds, and never happens in any games due to the nature of how they work. if burn in is the only thing holding you back from getting an oled, i would just get one, burn in is honestly, so rare and hard to actually get that i would consider it a myth at this point. i think the only way you can genuinely get actual pixel burn in on a tv is by purposefully trying to get burn in by leaving the tv on a static image for like multiple days or weeks in a row. its an actual non issue outside of that.
THis is a feature that should be included on higher end monitors!!
It was already for years, using built in IR sensor with sensitivity/timeouts controls in menu.
Somthing i cant underestimate from this channel, is how you properly explain whats the problem, and whats the solution you will attempt and how at the beggining of the video
Great video! For those who also like to watch the screen from afar kinda like a TV, I recommand pressing Windows + Tab and clicking on another blank "desktop" when leaving to act as a screen saver. Just be aware that notifications from Discord or Steam will reveal the task bar and that you need a black wallpaper to begin with
Some NEC office monitors have this feature built in. They call it "human detection" and it's based on IR reflection as well as ambient light level. You can set the distance of detection so it won't trigger at office chair. It blanks out screen so when you return to the desk after short time it returns quite quickly.
Love seeing your desk/workspace journey over the years. Can't wait to see how it continues evolving!
I have no need for an anti-burn in device, but I love your videos so still a great watch.
You have one of the most innovative contents out there. I’d never have the initiative nor the time to pursue those projects, but it’s very entertaining to watch your discovery process.
Thank you for this.
If you pull out your Full Owners manual and scroll down to "EXTERNAL CONTROL DEVICE SETUP" the TV has a serial port in the form of 3.5MM audio jack. The manual tells you how to wire a DB9 to it, and the entire protocal and the OP Codes for the things you can controll, including Screen Off appears to be: Energy Saving (Command: j q) Data 05.
That should completely remove the need for the home automation and wifi connections.
Ah so smart! I hadn't thought of that. More stuff to read... Thank you!
Wow great find!
He did it boys, he RTFM'd.
How will this work when my PC Motherboard/GPU has no serial port? Haven't seen one of these in a LONG time, since USB more or less made them obsolete outside of industrial or niche device use.
@@Globespy they are still prolific on embedded, the ardunio depending on flavor have anywhere from 1 to 3 of them. but sans that FTDI make usb serial chips that are molded into the USB A side connector.
i was so scared of burn ins when using oled TVs so even when I wanted them so badly, I kept my old IPS panel. this one is a good idea, a potential workaround
I just love how you tackle problems with do-it-yourself solutions. Keep up the amazing work -- these are great videos!
Absolutely adore how little you care despite being wildly successful because of fhe extra effort you've put into your art. Make no mistake, that is why you are known and its appreciated. A guy could half ass this but you don't.
I have so much respect for you man. It seems you have higher aspirations in life. Cheers to you and everyone else striving for something better.
Always strive for improvement but never settle.
you have a wealth of skill knowledge.Really admire you.
You keep leveling up.
Thank you so much for sharing such a excellent video😆
I am interested in your products, how can I buy them?🥰
I am interesting with this sensor module, could you share me the order link?
Great idea. I was thinking about a similar thing, but I was planning on emulating the IR remote of the TV with an IR LED to do this. There's a "Screen Off" option in the menu of the TV (you can put it to the side bar shortcuts which gets shown when you press the cog on the remote) which does the same as the Blank Screen Saver, and the screen resumes if you press the back arrow again. You might also be able to improve the accuracy of room presence detection by combining the mmWave sensor with a PIR sensor. The mmWave would improve the speed of detection, but the PIR could smooth out issues originating from "through the wall" detection. (The "Everything Presence One" does this for example). Then the only thing I would miss is an auto switching capability between my desktop and notebook... :)
Thank you for this. I'm ready to build, but can you tell me about the black case and the bread board components? It looks like those are the only two items needed that were not described. Thank you!
mmWave is so cool. Being able to set such a precise boundary has so many uses.
I'm using Sony QD-OLED TV as PC monitor and it has this functionality already integrated via bravia cam. Good job pulling it off yourself with LG, quite impressive!
a cam inside your tv? lmao what
@@xcruell High end TVs often include webcams. This one is called bravia cam, one of the selling points on 2022 Sony Bravia and it offers additional functionality such as gesture control and auto dimming when no one is watching.
I love how a video like this can turn the comment section into a brainstorming event, with problem solving, and iterative ideas. Makes me wanna create something, lol
You're awesome for open sourcing it
Really interesting project with and elegant result! Great explanation and overview of how the solution works!
Really cool tool especially that you have a small screen that gives you info's as well
That’s pretty impressive, well done! Really interesting
I've been using an OLED tv as a monitor for five years now. Burn in is completely overblown. Granted, my desktop is dark and I never leave it on a large white background, but I do that on all my monitors anyway, because bright white is distracting and gets even more annoying in a dim room. The OLED tv also dims automatically when no movement is detected on screen after a couple minutes. I leave the TV on while idling for hours at a time, leaving the room or house, with no issues. I also have 8+ hrs of screen on time on all my OLED phones on a daily basis. Never seen burn in in my life.
would totally buy the finished product. C2 Owner from germany ;)
Subscribed. This is the kind of cleverness I can get behind.
You're a cool guy David. Your videos are always interesting and enjoyable 😎👍
This is pretty much the only thing that would convince me to get an OLED for my desktop.
Ha cool. You can remove the LG logo when turning off if you like. Triple click remote 'mute' button for hidden menu
nice find
Very impressive, nice solution
With burn in being the number one problem with OLED together with the amount of power they use manufactures should be including this by default....Great idea.
kudos for leap v2 chair, i've got it couple of days ago and after "typical dxracer" i'm started to feel my back again
This is soooooo coooooool. Man, you're genius!!!
LG should buy this idea from you for 999999999 money and sell it to everyone!
I would get 1 for myself for sure!
Love your videos, keep ‘‘em coming!
Honestly, if you're using HA you can just use any off the shelf solution for pretense detection and program it using node red or HA automation. No coding needed and might be easier imo
Great job. You're certainly inspiring me to try out some hardware mods.
umm. Let's get a vid on the Leap V2! Your vids are always very informative and practical!
Aqara FP1 sensor, it will know your position on the room, it doesn’t matter if you are moving or not. It’s kinda slow to detect so, movement to turn off and millimeter wave to know if turn off, or change input to PS if you sit on the couch for example.
Good project! Congratulations!
Great idea
Can you please tell me what is your monitor stand? This looks very stable
Im sure this has already been talked about but I looked into a similar implementation using my TVs earc HDMI protocol, and the TV's internal settings. didnt get far but might be another option!
Thank you! This is a great idea for any monitor
I like this an awesome idea...patent it 🤔
Brilliant idea 💡
Could use the PIR in combo with the milwave, only enable milwave once PIR is triggered, then turn it off again once you leave range.
they should build a sensor in every monitor lol awesome work!!!
Can I get a link to the PCB board that the ESP32 plugs into please? Thanks!
Great video. One thing I noticed was that the lg tv companion app was built entirely in c++. You could find a way to implement usb control and use parts of the existing lgtv app to control the TV directly.
FC of this channel. not so many clips. but always worth to watch..
Cool concept. I pretty much copied your entire set-up 2 years ago and have been trying to keep up ever since. Quick question - did you make changes to your monitoring arm for the OLED screen? I have noticed your screen is a lot lower than it used to be, and the arm I have right now(the Ergotron HX Monitor Arm) wouldn't go that low. Thanks!
Where did you get that sweet wallpaper?
very interesting and helpful video, hoping for more vids!!
We need more engineeing content like this!!! Thanks a lot!!!
Hey david, what chair are you using. Love the look.
WOW! Nice work!!
When it's ready for sale...let me know!
Those mmWave presence detectors are the future !
amazing video, what kind of homme assistant are you using? can you give the link to documentation about sending commands thru our code? thank you and keep up the amazing work.
Would you be willing to sell a kit or a full on product to help others obtain this too? If so I would be very interested 😊
can't wait for the MicroLED monitors
when are you going to make an automatic screen cleaner then ?
This seems super oberengineered with semi optimal results.
Considering you've got a macropad nearby anyways, I thi k pressing a simple button would've been a better resolution.
The weight sensor would be my take. It also allows for a neat sit/stand desk automation
I much prefer his solution.
very nicely done!
You can use a thermal motion sensor to capture any object in the room that is between 35 and 38 degrees Celsius.
another simple solution would be to add camera with face detection, like on phone screen that unlock our phones. one thing is, it needs to be ON throughout and watch your face for eyes open so it can keep the screen ON otherwise turns it off if at all you just need to listen to some music.
easy to suggest but you need some really good software to back it up
Making the smart TV smarter 😎
I use a motion switch for the room light and just use a cheap microprocessor to detect the light on or off. In this way I can save more!
What stand/wall mount are you using for the monitor? Love the videos!
Wow epic! Thats the one thing that bothers me on this TV.
You have the best "maker porn" videos, think food porn but for making stuff. I wish you had a Discord were like minded individuals could pick each other's brain.
Do you work on your monitor or do you only use it for gaming? I was the msi 32urx for gaming but also for doing work.
Well done 👍🏻
Please please continue doing these engineering/Programming vids. This is just amazing man! 🫶🏾
@DavidZang what's your new FancyZone layout for the C2 42"?
why you don't make any videos in 6 months?
This was dope dog great job
Smart project!
A off the shelf alternative probably is the Aqara FP2.
What is the keypad that you're using btw?
Hey David,
How do you swap your desk tops out from time to time without worrying about the holes that were drilled into the wood?
what do you record with?
Hi David, Do you get distortion/eye fatigue looking out to edges of the flat 42" C2 at that viewing distance?
Nice Video! Though you should clean your monitor, When you turned of the TV I at first thought that my screen is dirty and started to clean it. Just WOW
What is name of the chair you are using? What is the brand?
Bro it's awesome
Can you make a full video on that which is coding for that device.
awesome device...
This cool David!
Hello Devid.
Please share the link on your custom keyboard that you called as 'keypad'.
I see that you are using an external wireless keyboard with white keys.
it lies to the left of your keyboard.
If you can add a few words about it, please.
Awesome project haha I tried many different thing with my C1, custom python scripts, LGTV Companion App etc... but yeah it's never perfect in the end. I think the main issue is C1 is just not a PC monitor. But until there are better alternatives, I'll stick to it :)
Also : Your screen is hella dusty David, do something haha
Is there any ready solution or product on market yet? i would buy one
i hate it when i see people saying "my oled is still fine after hundreds of hours of usage", or "no problems after a year of daily use".
well, duhhhh. i need an expensive tech like oled tv to last me at least 20.000 hours or 5+ years.
I'm not paying $1.000+ for a year of usage, or a few hundred hours, which translate into a few months of usage.
So did you market it already for sale ?...
I would just use a hot key. You can buy a single keyswitch and just hit the button when to blacken screen when leaving or to turn back on.
where did you buy that headrest from?
Hey David, just curious if youve had any issues with using a Mac on these bigger monitors. I have the 48inch C1, and i know you had that one previously, just having issues with my macbook and mac mini, scaling up to the size. Thanks for any reply!
Wow. Just wow. Holy.
hi, and great video as always.
I would like to do the same but not fully automatic like you did with the motion sensor, but just by manually pressing a macro in my keyboard. How could I do that?
I would also want to have the timer for the complete shut down of the tv starting only after I had pressed the macro wich trigger the black screensaver.
please reply me and keep the good work up!
i miss these videos
Hi can you please test the Interstuhl Every Active office chair?
