When I was in high school, I had a friend who had watched German movies as a kid (without practicing grammar). When we were studying grammar, he knew all these things instinctively - he just didn't know the technical terms for them. So, I don't think it is necessary (of course, the basics are important, but all other stuff you learn naturally).

1 A simple question how long it took you to start thinking in English. 2 How are you going to think in English if you haven't learned it? 3 No one thinks about a language without first knowing how to speak it fluently. 4 Speaking a non-native language requires a solid foundation of knowledge so you can speak without having to think. 5 Knowledge of general subjects demands a lot of study and solid resilience. No one can do all of this in a short time. 6 It takes at least years of immersion to be successful.
