Im only 21, but when Adge gets asked if the younger generations will listen to his songs I can proudly say yes. Long live the Wurzels and long live Adge. Although the young farmers can piss off
Adge Cutler and the Wurzels, what a great group, the pride of Somerset and the whole of the West Country I am sure. My Dad was a big fan and after hearing 'Drink Up Thee Zider', he bought the album 'Live at the Royal Oak, Nailsea' and it was never off the turntable. I remember when they came to Bournemouth, our town, and Dad booked to see them at the Winter Gardens. A brilliant and very funny show, the audience containing many Adge look-alikes and travelling Somerset fans dressed up for the night in all the farm labourer gear. The highlight for me was a bloke in a smock coming on stage with a wheelbarrow full of odourless dried horse manure and a pitchfork, hurling it into the audience during 'Champion Dung Spreader!' It was super, harmless fun but long before Health and Safety of course. That would have been in 1967 when I was 19. We saw the band one more time after that, which would have been in 1971 or 1972 at the White Buck pub in Burley, New Forest, another great show and just a few feet from them that time. So sad when he passed away so suddenly, it was a great shock to all. The modern day band, although keeping the great Cutler songs alive, to my mind can never equal the golden days of Adge Cutler. He was a true poet of the West Country, a humourist of the finest calibre and a Somerset man through and through who put the County on the map and left us with a batch of great songs to remember him by. I inherited 'Live at Nailsea' when Dad passed and still put it on the turntable now and then, and recommend it to anyone who never saw him live. R,I.P. Adge Cutler.
My Nan moved to Hinton St George in about 1970 me being a 'Lunun' lad was bored shitless spending a week of the summer holidays with her until a few of the local lads took me to Merriott or Crewkerne (memory) to see Adge Cutler & The Wurzels. 13/14 years old and introduced to 'Scrumpy' They had to carry me most of the 3 miles back down pitch black country lanes, what a night though :)
Combine harvester was one of my favourite songs as a kid growing up in the 90s. I had a "combination songs" cassette tape that had it on and I remember asking for it to be played at one of my birthday party discos when I was 7-8 years old. I'm now 30 years old and still love it. I've only just recently discovered other songs by the wurzels and love them too. Also only recently read online that Adge Cutler died so young, so sad! My Dad is also a (retired) musician and used to be in a rock band called Agnes Strange. He also has the nickname Adge (Alan). He thinks combine harvester is great! Such a catchy tune!
I remember seeing Adge & the Wurzels at Downend Cricket Club, Bristol in 1969:- fantastic! I'd like to mention that the Wurzels "Combine Harvester" may have been inspired by Irishman Brendan Grace's hit, but was actually a parody of Melanie's, 1971 song "Brand new Key," which she wrote.
Brendan Grace’s “Combine Harvester” was a parody of Melanie’s “Brand New Key. The Wurzels basically covered Brendan Grace’s parody, his 1975 release is on TH-cam.
"when you crawl down the street on your hand and your feet, its the scrumpy" , "when your blood starts to freeze and you sag at the knees, that's the scrumpy" 😆😆😆💗
I’m from Somerset/Dorset. First thing I did when I got my first car last summer, is put in my best of the wurzels CD in the summer heat and drive around blasting it, doesn’t matter day I’ve had- Shepton mallet matador always cheers me up
Yes, I knew about Brian passing away, I would have gone to his funeral but wasn’t able to due to COVID-19. I have his tuba in my collection of all things Wurzels.
I went into the Royal Oak in Nailsea in 2016 to pay homage to great man by having a pint of cider. Pictures of Adge and Wurzels all over the walls. Thinking to be clever I ordered "a pint of what Adge Cutler would have had please" - and the punk behind the bar said "Who?". Ah well.
Odd as most west country punk rockers, know exactly who he is, thanks to the likes of Chaos UK and Disorder from Pill and Nailsea. I think you're confusing punk rocker, with hipster!
Thanks for this. I had never seen it. I was bought up on Adge and the Wurzels, this has given me a lovely insight into their history. Pity my Dad is not here to see this. He was a great fan. Twas a great connection for a man from Somerset living in New Zealand.
i live in somerset and there used to be a local pub DJ who would only play wurzels and Bob Marley songs for the entire night, there'd be more foot tapping than actual dancing but everyone would be singing along, happy days.
When Noel Edmonds was doing the chart rundown for that week, it was kind of obvious which record would be at No 1, as loud choruses of "OOH AR! OOH AR!" followed each announcement of the last few titles.
Why was he not on the list of the 100 Greatest Britons? Did the BBC not ask the good people of Somerset when that poll was conducted? There were shockingly few people included from the west country- I can only recall Humphrey Davey
kerbal666 glad you enjoyed seeing 'The Legends of The West Country' at the weekend. Check out the full gig list for future shows and appearances on The Wurzels website and also join 'The Fans of The Wurzels Official Facebook Group' for all the fan gossip and other Wurzelised fun! m.facebook.com/groups/124552674251344
for those who dont know know, Rowley Ansell in the interview at the beginning of the video appeared in one of adges songs "i couldn't spell" champion raspberry blower from pill
My next door neighbour in Glastonbury, Iris Brown ,was a neighbour of Brian and Rosemary in Hinton Blewett and I got to meet him several times when he and Rosemary visited her. It sounds like you might be a brass player yourself. I play trumpet, and on 14th June 2013 when The Wurzels played Glastonbury Abbey I was playing trumpet t with The Minor Works Unit who were the support act! You were probably there

Hi. Looks like it came from a tape. Is there any possibility of improving the copy from the tape? In particular the Great Western Musical Thunderbox clips - I was at a number of recordings of that programme.
mikeuknz hi, thanks for your comment. Yes it was indeed converted from a VHS tape to DVD and then to this the digital copy. It is a true representation of the quality (inferior I know) of VHS recordings. Having spoken to another fan that recorded the same series back in 1991 and have compared recordings this is as good as it gets. To enhance the quality (if indeed it is possible) would cost a lot of money.

Great post. Thank you.
Wow thank you I've learnt so much...
Britain's finest group, at their finest.
I would love to have seen Adge Cutler. Hard to believe he was only 43 when he died.
i had no idea 😢
Saw the Wurzels today in Bristol. Still sound fantastic. Wonderful chaps. Wish I'd been alive to see Adge perform
There's not many who invent a new genre but Scrumpy & Western is one of the immortals.
I'm from the Yorkshire Dales, but Adge's music speaks to me loud and clear!
Funny enough when searching for them, it also linked the Yorkshire folk group, The Weavers. Found one epic concert which was sadly taken of QQ music.
Cheers bud
Yooz always welcome

😂👍 Brilliant.
I'm letting my great grand daughter listen to Adge and the Wurzels at 6months
Well respected Adge RIP x
Bloody brilliant! I'm a Shirehampton/Portishead boy living in Brum and I needed this.
My missus is from Shire', but I've learned to forgive her over the years.

A catchy tune indeed, though I should point out that it was written by Melanie Safka; the Wurzels put their own words to it.
yes, i know 😀👍@@Krzyszczynski
@@becky1992 Sorry, Becky, I wasn't getting at you - I'm sure you know a lot more than I do! My comment was more for the benefit of the other readers.

Good to see Brian Walker, one of the original five Wurzels who sadly died last month (June 2020) aged 94.
