I'm self taught so strumming is the weakest part of my playing, I can sound great on most songs, but if I get a faster tempo song or palm muted song, my weakness starts to show. So, with all that said - I'll give this a go. Thanks.
Nonsense!!! Surely your hand is big enough to get the lowest 2 strings muffled! You might have to move your hand vertically a bit to mute the strings you're aiming for but you'll naturally figure out a way to do it if you keep up the good work!
My hand doesn't fully mute the high e string but mygrip on the pick is different... I have both the middle and index finger on it. Is that the cause or am I doing something else wrong?
I for sure have noticed how little good players move their struming hand. It makes it hard sometimes to see what string they are playing. They are fast and move very little. There are countless subtle things to learn that have a huge impact on the sound being made.
Sean Daniel Actually I do, currently I'm struggling with fretting hand tendinosis, and can't seem to recover too fast. Any tips for fretting hand ergonomics?
I think the number one thing is to pay attention to where your thumb sits on the back of neck. The way your fingers will approach the fretboard all comes from that positioning. Like if it's cheating too far towards the headstock, you'll end up with some really uncomfortable reaches. Another thing is to maybe try a lighter set of strings so you won't have to push down as hard. Worst case scenario, maybe look into getting a nylon string classical, when my hands are feeling it, I always start playing the classical cause it's so much easier. Hope that helps!
Ok I'm officially subscribing. I've been looking through videos on youtube for months to learn guitar, and yours are the ones I've actually been able to see improvement from. The way you explain things makes it so much easier to understand and actually put into practice. Definitely sticking to your channel.
When I started this I was applying too much pressure on the string. I was getting frustrated that it seemed like I couldn't learn such a simple technique. I kept trying but I was applying too little pressure. I ended up finding the middle ground. Now I'm palm muting on all six strings and it's become second nature to me! Love the help! Thanks man!
This is by far the most thorough and instructive video on muting I have found. Just watching it without my guitar I feel ready to try it out with a depth of understanding I wouldn’t have had from any other video. Thank you so much, I’m subscribed now :)
You saved my life. I have a song to learn till christmas. (I'm a begginer) And in the song theres palm muting. I had NO idea how to do it. And you helped me so much. Thank you!!!!
Cheers Sean ... another gem of information, taught in the brilliant, comical and light-hearted way we have come to expect from you. Thoroughly informative and enjoyable, making learning a pleasure .... don't ever change!!!
Oh, gosh! This was amazing! I've been wanting to learn how to do this, and I thought it would be as complicated as learning how to do it on the uke with another video. To my surprise, it only took me -- what -- seconds or minutes to do so. You are amazing, and thank you!
I've been meaning to leave substantial comments on your videos but I haven't had the time to do so. Your channel has really been helping me to -- not only play better -- but to understand the instrument and have a deep love and respect for it. I hope you have a Patreon or something so we can give back. Yours are probably the best lessons since they're the most understandable. I also find that I've been putting these skills to use.
I feel stupid because palm muting is a weakness of mine. Though I’m trying really hard to get myself to improve at it. I play a lot of metal songs :/ With that being said, thank you for this video! I’m taking a lot from it.
this has been so far the most helpful video I have watched related to guitar learning. I feel finally I found somebody who is sharing the tricks :) Thanks man
Great video Sean, I got a lot more out of this than I thought I would. I thought I was just going to learn about palm mutes but I also learned about how to be precise and convserve motion at the same time. I'm really glad that I thought to look up how to do palm mutes and that I clicked on your video when I did.
Man this really helped me understand how to strum without flying all over the place with your right hand. It's so addicting to learn, I just wish I could do it faster! BTW the close ups of the strumming hand really helped so thanks!
THANK YOU! I'm currently doing FenderPlay's PAID course online and the explanation for this technique is complete a$$ !! Bless you for making this content, I'll be sure to binge your channel and have already saved several videos to watch later. Thanks!!!!
Very helpful video my friend. Thanks so much. I’m more of a piano player but decided to take guitar more seriously over the last two years. Can’t wait to practice these techniques, once again, thank you my friend. I appreciate the videos you make
To us drummers out there learning guitar, the thumb technique @3:20 feels a bit like learning the French grip technique, focusing on and improving your thumb/index finger fulcrum strength (ooh, sounds a little dirty, baby). It's got that same kind of thumb "thrust" movement. Perhaps there's not a lot of drummers out there learning guitar, but for the 2 of you that will read this in the next 10 years, this helped me a bit, and feels like it helps flatpicking accuracy :). Cheers!
Hey, that thumb thing is really helpful. It took me a minute to break through on that, but it is MUCH better than trying to do it from the wrist. Thanks!
the whole time before watching this video i had my palm on like the middle of guitar & i kept wondering why it had no sound & now i know what a relief:’)
Sean I love your videos as well as others I give a lot of respect for all you guys do for you too and help others achieve their dreams of becoming musicians
Great video! I’m relatively new to guitar and I am working on trying to stop myself from forming bad habits that could limit my playing later on before they great harder to break. This video was very helpful.
Thanks!! huge fan of your vidoes. my palm muting is still a little rusty but this video sure helps to clarify a lot of things that other tutorials couldn't. could you make a video on which scales to use in which a certain key and a little explanation on how to find a key of a song based on its chords(?)
Good shit, dude. I hear other folks saying, "yeah, palm mute it" but when I tried I just muted the whole freaking thing. Also, you're a bit blurry. I feel like I'm 10 beers in, but I didn't spend a dime! Now that's a bargain. 🙂
I'm self taught so strumming is the weakest part of my playing, I can sound great on most songs, but if I get a faster tempo song or palm muted song, my weakness starts to show. So, with all that said - I'll give this a go. Thanks.
+Andy Copland Thanks for watching Andy. I was in the same spot and now all I do is palm mute. You'll get the hang of it quick enough :)
Dude same
Andy Copland how’s the progress now after a few months?
same!
Andy Copland Two years man. How much better have you gotten?
This short lesson just got my strumming, muting and palm muting and improvised chord selection together. Great chord progression choice!!! Thank you!
So happy to help!
When I saw him drop the cup cake I subscribed Instantly
+Future Writer Haha, welcome to the party!
Glad to be here;)
Same here!

Same here 😂😂
after 2years of playing guitar I realized how to make that palm mute thing and now I know.. my hands are too small for it ;-;
Nonsense!!! Surely your hand is big enough to get the lowest 2 strings muffled! You might have to move your hand vertically a bit to mute the strings you're aiming for but you'll naturally figure out a way to do it if you keep up the good work!
Well I can mute them but can't reach that circle to play ;-; it is not a big deal just the sound is a bit different.
It could be possible that your. Guitar is to big but I’d never know I only have 1
My hand doesn't fully mute the high e string but mygrip on the pick is different... I have both the middle and index finger on it. Is that the cause or am I doing something else wrong?
Excuses, excuses -_-
I for sure have noticed how little good players move their struming hand. It makes it hard sometimes to see what string they are playing. They are fast and move very little. There are countless subtle things to learn that have a huge impact on the sound being made.
Exactly
Any other little tips that impact the sound played??
Came here for palm muting left with a new chord progression that gets me moving around the fretboard. Thanks homie
Happy to help!
Thanks Sean. I struggle more w strumming than memorizing chords. Never thought that would be the case. Thanks
Not for long!
I really like this videos and humor, really. And the second camera angle is appreciated!
+Adrian-Florin Vișan Thanks so much for the support! I'll keep em coming and let me know if you have any questions!

I can tell you have a really strong intuitive understanding of music, therefore, you can explain things in depth with lots of insights. Thanks!

I had been taking the name too literally. The first 20 seconds were all I needed

Learned a lot more than just palm muting. Thanks man, keep the coming.
