  • Just because the Prophet(SAW) did something, do we really have to also do the same? Are we going to be considered 'sinful' if we don't do that?

The mechanism used for measuring time was the sun. which was socio cultural. daily events coincided with sun rise and set through out the year. shouldnt we then use clocks above 45 degrees latitude, as the sun does not stick to the normal human wakeup and sleep times? How much I wish the prophet was here so I could negotiate this issue with him because our genius scholars fail to see that using the sun to distribute prayer times through the day was also a cultural thing. that was the only reliable and widely available clock they had.

@Najma Khan I am alluding to a different aspect of prayer time. The one that considers the harmony of daily life and prayer times. Which did exist in the Arabian society due to its geographical location. People used to wake up just before sunrise, pray fajr, day prayers in work breaks, maghrib and finally Isha before retiring to bed. Day and night were roughly 50-50. Prayer distribution was in harmony with daily life. But above 45 degrees latitude that's not the case. In summers Fajr is in the middle of the night, maghrib and Isha are way past bed time, and in winters, Fajr falls on the way to work and 3 prayers squeeze into work times at rapid succession. With very little opportunity to attend prayers in congregation, the solar clock is completely out of sync with daily life.

@@Pratibhinbh I mean in that problem that you mentioned I am seeing an exam from Allah subhanu wa ta‘la for us in the nothern Areas. The Sheikh mentioned some examples like sitting on the road path etc. You can’t compare those thing with Salah which is the main pillar of Islam. The five times of Prayer are not explicitly written in the Quran, although they're certainly implied. Allah subhanu wa ta‘la said in the holy Qur’an :
For example, the Surah 11 Hud, Ayat 114-114 reads, "And establish the Prayer at the two ends of the day and in the first hours of the night. Indeed the good deeds drive away the evil deeds. This is a Reminder to those who are mindful of Allah."
This seems to refer to Salat al-fajr, Salat al-maghrib and Salat al-'isha.
Surah 50 Qaf Ayat 39 goes, "Therefore, O Prophet (saws), bear with patience whatever they say, and keep up glorifying your Lord with his praise, before sunrise and before sunset. And glorify Him again in the night and also when are free from prostrations."
This seems to refer to Salat al-fajr, Salat al-asr and Salat al-'isha.
Surah 30 Rum Ayat 17-18 states, "So, glorify Allah in the evening and in the morning; all praise is for Him in the heavens and the earth- as well as in the afternoon and at noon."
This seems to refer to Salat al-fajr, Salat al-zuhr, Salat al-asr and Salat al-magrib.
So the thing all muslims are tested differently. We as Europeans/Northamericans have more problems with prayer times, but many muslims in muslim countries have financial problems and live sometimes in warzones. All this Allah subhanu wa ta‘la knew. It would be really unfair if we in northern Area would have everything without any problems, but muslims in other parts of the world struggle even to survive. Prayer times were never discussed not even centuries after the death of Rasulullah salallahu alayhi wa salam, because everyone knows that no one except Allah can make easier rulings on prayers.
I hope I could help you.
Assalamu alaykum wa rrahmatullahi wa barakatuhu

Dressing like the Arabs in western lands is a good thing as it draws attention to a person being a devout Muslim - why did the prophet tell us to shave the moustache and grow the beard? Think about it.
