Making a song with only the ART PRO MPA II Pre Amp

  • This video ended up being a rather important moment for me because it really helped me understand the importance of intention when recording. As you'll learn from the video, the goal was to create a small piece of music with only a pre amp. Choosing the correct settings and instruments before hitting record rather than a usual 'fix in the mix' scenario.
    When it came to actually mixing this track I found myself flying through it and picking plugins that I knew would compliment the track and make it more exciting. I usually find myself second guessing a lot and I think this approach really gave me some confidence. Enjoy!

    In the hunt for more gain you've got two options - daisy-chain the two channels on the way in (ie plug source into channel 1, patch the output of channel 1 into channel 2 then channel 2 into your DAW) - or use the MPA II as an external effect to reamp the track hotter - nether would have broken your MPA-only rule.

    You did a great job creating this video. This was a pleasure to watch. I like the telephone microphone also. I enjoyed your creative use of the MPA II. Side Note: You had mentioned Pro Tools in the past. I wanted to say that I use REAPER DAW because its amazing. My personal opinion is that REAPER is a much better DAW than Pro Tools on many levels. Plus, its much more stable. Kenny Gioia ("REAPER Mania" here on TH-cam) has some great videos here where he talks about REAPER, shows examples, and why he uses that DAW. Keep up the great work !!!

I’m also a do it all guy with a home studio but with no hardware at all, except for my interface, which happens to be a Scarlett too, and I use logic aswell. I’ve been really considering lately in getting an Art MPA II or even an Art Voice Channel. I think I am already convinced. This video contributed a lot. Is very usefull. Thank you!

      @@CantAffordToRecord oh cool! How did you find the sound of the Gap73 compared to the art pro? I'm actually considering the new Gap73 premier series do you know it? (the one with the typical neve colors, big red knob etc, I've heard great thing about it!) this summer I had the chance to play for a couple weeks with the BAE 1073 of a friend of mine and it's absolutely fantastic, but a bit to expensive for my budget therefore I'm wondering about the pre 73 Premiere, but there's not so much content online about it. Nevertheless I'd love to hear your thoughts on the "regular" gap73

    • @CantAffordToRecord
      @CantAffordToRecord  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven’t tried the premier 73 but I’m sure it sounds amazing. My preference out of the GAP and ART is the ART as it’s a little more bang for the buck (two channels) and is pretty versatile. I’ve done a few more videos on it if you wanted to check them out!
      Wouldn’t turn down a premier 73 though! It looks pretty snazzy! Lemme know what you decide one!

    I was wondering what your thoughts would be on buying a warm audio wa2 73 mic pre versus the new art transy x mic pre. I'm about to record a new album and I want to make sure that I'm using transformers for this project in my mic pre. I already own a Rupert Neve RNDI(S) with transformers in it. I wanted more of a Neve microphone preamp, but even the warm audio is almost $1,600 which is no problem but if I could find something that does virtually the same thing for half the cost that would be better just wondering what your thoughts on both of these units might be.

    • @CantAffordToRecord
      @CantAffordToRecord  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately I have zero experience with both of those units you've mentioned, I do however have a video on my channel about the Golden Age Pre-Amp 'Pre-73' which you might find of interest!
      Full disclosure, I don't own it anymore and opted for the ART Pro MPA instead but if you haven't considered it, it would be worth your while checking it out.

    • @CantAffordToRecord

  • @spyoutube1467
    @spyoutube1467 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey, I got the Art pro and pro VLA but I can't get the VU meter up unless I turn the gain up on the knobs. And then the microphone clips easily. If I turn down the gain, then the VU meter doesn't move at all and is not using it's potential. I'm using the slate ml 1 microphone.

    • @CantAffordToRecord
      @CantAffordToRecord  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah my one is similar, don’t worry too much although you could mess with the variable impedance as finding a ‘sweeter’ spot might make your needle move a little more. That being said, I would personally just take more note of what your DAWs meters are doing than the VUs on the unit. Hope this helps :)

    • @CantAffordToRecord
      @CantAffordToRecord  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello! You don’t need a cloudlifter to use an SM7b :) all a cloudlifter does is add 20db or so as you record, you don’t need to have your interface cranked up as high. I personally just crank up my Focusrite gain control or if I go through the MPA I press the +20dB button and still crank it some.
      TLDR; you don’t really need a cloudlifter if you’re using the mic on a loud source already, just turn up the gain on whatever you’re using 🤘🏻
