    excellent deck. i used one for a couple years back in the mid-80's and I think the tuneup would be replace belts and rubber rollers, degauss the heads, and have a tech do all that for you and clean it up if need be. Then you should be set for another 25 years or so. Good little performer for home stereo audio. I'd grab one in a minute for less than say $200 in good working order.

    In my opinion... AMPEX 499 2" 24 Track (or even 2" 16 Track) at 30ips properly alligned is better for Electric Guitar and Drums... and... just gels together better, than modern digital even at 192KHz/32 bit float. I don't want to get in an argument with anybody. I use ProTools and other DAWs now and it is far more reliable and more reliably recorded well than analog or tape ever was. But digital audio is still chasing the "Better than Analog" claim they make everytime there's a major advance in digital audio. Things don't sound better just because they were put on analog tape. There is a slightly different art to analog recording and analog signal processing. There are things you would do or try on Analog tape that you wouldn't or couldn't do on a DAW. And... Converesely, Things you can do on a DAW that you cannot easily do on analog tape. I understand the whole process coming from the Analog Tape/Brittish Console perspective when I learned, so I am biased. But I understand and operate in the DAW world. I have one at home too. Kinda like how I grew up with IBM PCs and Apple IIs, so I actually know what some of that DOS or Linux is that allows your computer or phone to show those pretty interfaces. With analog audio... There is just a certain depth and clarity to it. Remember ALL sound in the air is analog. A soundwave is a soundwave, not a squared off, digital representation of a soundwave. There are no "Digital Speakers."

I enjoy producing with Ableton and Reaper, Logic is supposed to be great but something about it doesn't sit well with me, at least for recording and editing audio and mixing, it is for certain production stuff.

    Maybe clean the heads with IPA. 3 heads refers to the erase head, record head and playback head. It is possible to listen to the playback on the playback head while your recording. The output is a fraction of a second after the input. The faster the tape speed the shorter the delay. A great trick to play on someone get them to record a vocal while playing back the playback head in their headphone. Result instant drunk effect. Enjoy the reel to reel these were the DAWs of their time. Great for cut editing.

    Someone commented that you can't get the "carcinogenic" capacitors anymore. Don't know about the carcinogenic aspect, but you can get any old components that have drifted 'out of spec' replaced with new components of similar original value, so that won't be a barrier getting it tip-top electrically.

    Fist, you should clean everything that will come in contact with the tape. On first play i'd have my hands close to the power switch, just in case something goes wrong... If both reels turn in different directions, something goes wrong 😉 If the sound is fine for the first few seconds and then start to sound dull/muffled, there is a good chance that the tape is bad and will start to mess up the heads and the mechanism. Don't adjust anything before you tried another tape that maybe isn't sticky

    A tuneup includes an electrical alignment. That requires certified test tapes, which are probably impossible find anymore. Everything in the audio circuits of that machine is Analog. The first step is to look up the RMS voltage of -0dbVU (I think it is 0.775 V RMS) send a verified -0db signal to the machine, then adjust the VU meters to read 0db at 0.775V RMS with a 1KHz sine wave. If the meters are uncalibrated the whole alignment will be meaningless. The test tapes needed to do this may be impossible to find and/or deteriorated. You are basically aligning the analog electronics so that 0db going in result in 0db coming off the tape and reads 0db on the meter. Former recording engineer/Studio Musician here. In the 90s we used 2" 24 Track tape. Sometimes synced 2x24 Tk machines with TimeCode (SMPTE) to make 48 Tracks. That would mean aligning all 48 channels before a major session. There is an art to it. The 3 heads are (in order): Erase/Bias Head Sel/Sync Head Playback Head You need to look up what Sel/Sync means to understand how a multi-track analog tape machine works. Sel/Sync was invented by Mr. Les Paul (Lester Paulfus) himself and revolutiinized audio recording in the late 40s - early 50s. Sel/Sync is a head that acts Selectively as a Record Head and a decen, but not perfect, playback head. That is how overdubs were invented on analog tape. The Record and Monitor heads have to be at the same place on the tape path or else the overdub would be milliseconds behind the original track. Back im the 1990s SoundTools was an editing and (yuch!) mastering software. Stereo based. ProTools had just come out and it was a clunky nightmare that was kind of useful to "fix" specific tracks or layer things in Post Prod, but it was useless as a replacement for the multitrack tapes at the time. A problem you will run into with any old analog audio equipment. Manyof the capacitors they were built with are Electrolytic Capacitors. (They have special oils or chemicals which achieve the capacitance rated on the shell.) These leak and/or evaporate over decades so they no longer are acurate to specifications. It is possible to replace some of them, put specifically the Electrolytic capacitors in the audio circuits are made with chemicals (carcinogens) that are now banned by the EU, Japan, and California so nobody makes them anymore. Finally.... DO NOT USE ALCOHOL TO CLEAN RUBBER COMPONENTS! It will dry them out and make them crack. Use Distilled Water on a rag and lots of elbow-grease. HOWEVER... DO NOT USE WATER ON TAPE HEADS OR METAL GUIDES! This will cause rust. You need 91% Isopropyl Alcohol. The standard medical 71% Isopropyl contains too much water.

    OK… So I just ordered a new M4 Pro Mac mini and a monitor and should receive them in the next day or two. Is there any point in messing around with GarageBand and Logic 9, that I own. Or, …. should I just delete GarageBand off the machine and do everything in Reaper? When Apple first bought Logic I thought that was so great. I loved that I could comp a song in GarageBand and if I came up with anything cool, I would just dump it straight into Logic to really produce it at a higher level. However, I know reaper is so lightweight that I’m thinking I’m just stripping everything I can off my new Mac mini and doing everything in Reaper. And brand new to reaper, but I understand the history and I know it’s a powerful program with lots of customization.

    • @CantAffordToRecord
      @CantAffordToRecord 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I would not be too hasty to delete programs yet. I'd try and make a song in each and see which DAW speaks to you the most. As much as I absolutely adore Reaper, there's no doubt that Logic Pro has some incredible advantages for songwriters such as the AI drummer etc. Really cool stuff. I think you're onto something with this "work with what you have first" idea. That's not a bad live snare- it's thick and snappy with some crunch. Add more gain with a 1073 (if that's not what you already did for EQ), try a DBX or 1176 to add 'gravity' and help it crack, see what you can add with the clever little Kilohartz Transient Shaper... nothing feels better than achieving an epic drum sound without samples. When the Fates allow, lol!

If it cost $499, it would be an easy sell. $700+ is a little too much in my opinion for what it is. It’s about 1/3 the size and functionality of the Stage, so it should be about 1/3 the price.

    Great video! I use Logic exclusively, and it's hard for me to imagine working any other way. I can go in after I've already recorded and tweak anything about the sound. I realize you can re-amp a guitar track with an actual amp, but that takes a lot longer, and you can't do it in real time. There are a few amps in Logic that sound ridiculous and would take a long time to make usable, but I have six or seven models that I go to that always seem to work in tandem with Logic's pedals and EQ. I've used the Orange like you did, and I also like the Silverface, Blackface, Pawn Shop, and Marshall. You just have to take your time and dial them in.

    I think if you find them comfortable and you learn them well then most will do, but it’s great to have a good starting point. I use the Sony 7506s and I’m used to their quirks etc, I seem to muddle through, with liberal amounts of referencing of great tracks

      Yep, spot on! Also, within the means of what one has, you'll make it work for you...(and sometimes that means eventually)

    Own a pair of the DT770's.They are sort of mid rangey sounding, which is good for people tracking vocals. All the parts can be separately purchased from Beyer, which is good for replacing any broken worn out bits. But sound wise, more so for tracking, I absolutely love the sound of Vic Firth MKII Stereo Isolation Headphones. So much so, I bought 5 pairs of them for the whole band to track simultaneously with no bleed, +20db of isolation due to the 'ear muff type' design. They were designed originally more so for drummers, but they have a great clarity/ bass response around 100Hz area to hear the kick/ bass relationship, and quite smooth/ flat sounding. Apart from needing just a bit more air/ brightness/ 10khz lift, if you really need to hear the cymbals/ vocals clearer, I'm really happy with them, especially at that price point.

    I DO have them . The 250ohm version. I have had mine 2.5 years and I love them! When I let my friend try them she loved them too! The only thing I could love more would be a 2.4 Ghz wireless version for everyday listening!

    my ears are trained to the AKG 240 open backs and the DT 770's and use both!...less ear fatigue with the 240's and can still communicate with the environment around me, good for jamming... the 770's though are super luxurious in comfort and sound quality.

      I love my AKG K-240s! I have two pair, one from the 80s that still work perfectly (albeit just a touch 'warmer') and another new pair I bought a couple years back for hardly any more money. Super comfortable and great for tracking vocals due to the semi-open back design, and my new ones have better impedance match to my amp so much better volume. I don't mix in them but I use them for mix review on every project- they equate to real world averages pretty well. I also bought K-701s for their high end detail, which they deliver very effectively (when I need to review that) but they aren't very much fun to listen to. Funny that!

    I have a Kemper Stage and HR Prime & Core, and had an FM3. Honestly, the Kemper and FM3 have to have a real good day to beat my 2nd gen HR products. I freely admit Fractal effects are the best, and I do think Kemper overdrives are the best only if on a top capture. My Kemper Stage is a nice unit, but my HR Prime & Core are so darn good at getting really good tones fast, and so easy to use. All of these units have very different personalities.
