- The new season of stranger things i now out on Netflix and in this video we are looking at some of the cinematography of episode one.
In this episode we will be looking at framing, lighting, camera movement, colour and more!
All the information in this video is based on interviews, behind the scenes footage and images i’ve found online, mix that with my own knowledge of being an indie film maker and hopefully you’ll find some helpful information in this video.

Also wanted to point out at 4:59 you can see the lighting is not the same when Max exits the bus walking towards camera when she is suddenly call back by the counselor. We loose that back light edge on the reverse shot. Definitely defused light
At 8:51 We call this cross keying, however when the camera pushes in to closer on the characters. The key on Max is brought in closer and definitely defuse. With the Hair light / edge looks like a source 4 leko spotlight maybe a stop higher than the key. You can definitely tell if you compare how harsh the edge is on her. But not to distracting from Max

Just came into your vid. Just wanted to add that they went with red dragon for season 1 due the fact that at the time Netflix deliverables were 4K and at the time arri did not have 4k opt. So they decided on red. For season 2 the DP decided to keep with Red but used helium 8k pair with leitz summilux-c lenses to keep the same look. I believe they used the same lenses for at least the first 3 seasons. But for season 3 they switched to the red monsteo camera. On season 4 they completely changed camera package to Arri LF paired with canon vintage lens & falcon detuned primes.
