Why is One Piece the Best Selling Manga? - Comic Tropes (Episode 95)

  • This week I visit Japan and examine why One Piece has become the best-selling manga of all time. Some of it has to do with the techniques that its creator, Eiichiro Oda, uses and some of it has to do with when it debuted.
Either way, it's extremely successful. I break down what the comic is about, its history, and how it is published. Includes visits to Shibuya Crossing's Tsutaya bookstore, Shueisha's office, Shonen Jump store at Tokyo Station, and Tokyo One Piece Tower.

I've been following One Piece for about 13 years and yup, the way the story is built, with an end in mind from the beginning, it's the thing that keeps me going. There's no useless information in One Piece, you may think you found one, but then 200 chapters later you find it was important for the plot, everything leads to its end and it allows us to speculate about what's going to happen without it looking like fanfiction. The world-building as well is miles away from any other story I've read. There are different islands and countries with different cultures and styles and histories as well. Oda also takes a lot from history itself - with parallels with ancient Egypt, native-american culture and even the civil rights movement. It may also look silly, but it has very serious plot points about corruption, revolution, slavery, class, etc. It's an engaging story overall.

My favourite is the Diable Jambe plot hole. Many people were like "how the heck is he just setting his leg on fire all of a sudden?" or when people said "How is Sanji as strong as Zoro without training?" and in WCI we found out that it was the result of Judge's experiments awakening in him as an adult.

Spoiler alert: EVERY MANGA has an end in mind considering how the industry works over there.
*It's something you understand after reading LOTS of manga.*
And no, reading only one manga for 13 years is not LOTS of manga; not by a longshot; just like reading Lord Of The Rings is not considered reading LOTS of high fantasy.

What makes One Piece stand out as well is its amazing long-term storytelling and the build up to amazing events that take sometimes years to come to fruition but turn out mindblowing when they finally happen. The length of the series really works to its favor because of this.

oda truely is a master at foreshadowing, and recalling old plot points and making them relevant again. like a certain line someone said is brought up again and expanded upon for example sanji mentioning he was from north blue. or a random background character is revealed to be important for example silvers reyliegh apearing in the background of a flshback long before he was introduced to the current story, it really adds depth to the story and shows how things were planned long in advance and dont just show up out of the blue

Oda claims to have had One Piece kicking around in his head ever since he was a kid, and I totally believe him. I think the true key to One Piece's success is how it's able to channel the unrestrained creativity and crazy logical leaps that kids are so great at, and then combines it with genuinely well written characters and thoughtful worldbuilding. It really does feel like a childhood daydream that Oda kept with him and expanded upon as he grew up.
I personally have always loved the art. The western-animation influence allows it to pull off some incredibly cool and dynamic poses, along with some of the most brutal hits I've ever seen in a battle manga.

One Piece's artstyle isn't that bad. Sure it looks exaggerated or cartoony at times but I think a lot of series have way worse artstyles (and this is just my opinion), like Dragonball Z, Jojo or Detective Conan. If you would have to pick a series based on the artstyle only, then I would definitely not touch them.

What i love most about One Piece is its ability to deliver top-notch cathartic climaxes and resolutions, fights are almost never meaningless, and are masterfully built up until you physically crave for Luffy to just crash in and kick the new bad guy's ass.
But I actually miss the old drawing and world design style, with time it became messy and super compressed (way more than the norm for a tankobon, and by one piece's standards as the only relevant reference), still, i'm too far into it to "stop caring for it" or change my heart about it, One Piece just gave me too much to turn my back on the series until it'll end.

I think that's why so many people love or hate One Piece because it feels off anime/manga. Its style turns people away because it's loopy and more cartoon inspired and has a more comic book like superhero vibe to it while at the same time being very attached to the roots of traditional anime and manga.

As Chris said, the drawings are goofy enough to appeal mostly to a younger audience, but the content is often entirely inappropriate for that same age group when it comes to levels of violence, blood, and sex.

kortis Oda said it was 65% at the beginning of Totland, and now it's 80% even though Totland just ended? You really think Totland was 15% of the story? I don't buy it, never trust Oda or his editors when it comes to completion percentage. Oda is known for "going off script" yes he has a basic outline but he still adds things last second i.e. Dressrosa was longer than he initially planned. Think about it we just started Wano which will last at least 2 years then we still have Elbaf, Raftel, and the Final War and that's just places and arcs we know for sure are going to happen. There are still speculative arcs as well such as Vegapunk and whatever is going on with Enel on the Moon.
In short Oda is just throwing out a random number, because he's Oda. There is no way it's actually 80% done.

I think what set OP from DB, Naruto, and Bleach is the author is very consistent even with its insane schedule. The other big author mangas have periods where they are either burned out or fed up and need a pause or break to renew their passion and sometimes this will show in their works, but not Oda. His stamina is legendary. Fans joke about him wishing he would slowdown! He is still enamored with his work.

You showed every single spoiler ever in this video! Oh well...! 😅One Piece will forever be the only manga I will ever like or read, and, in my eyes, it is absolutely perfect. I am a writer and One Piece is written beautifully, especially from a world-building standpoint. At one point, the Straw Hat crew visits islands in the sky, which is such a crazy, impossible thing to do, but it's done! And it makes sense when it's completed. Also, the greatest thing about that arc was that it began with a ship falling from the sky and a fictional quote ran past the pages that read, "Anything that man can imagine, is possible in reality." The moment that it was said, the world INSTANTLY seemed massive. Oda is a genius storyteller and a master at foreshadowing, and I could go on and go about that, but I'll say something I think is more important.
One Piece is the greatest manga of all time mostly because of where it was published: Japan. One Piece's main themes are about taking risks and giving your uniqueness a chance, chasing dreams and pursuing your own freedom. Those are qualities that are rare to find in Japan, and in a country where days are tiring and rough, One Piece is there for them with a story of a crazy kid who lets the world laugh at him as he does the impossible. And THAT is why One Piece is the Best Selling Manga.

One piece’s world building is unparalleled and characters and fights are very well executed. Finally Gave ir a shot and now I love it soo much, love the art and the characters. Been reading it for the past 6 years. Its amazing how Oda can even compare to characters like Spider man or Batman that had multiple diferent people working on diferent storyes and versions Over the years.

Been Reading One Piece for 10 years now, religiously waiting for my chapter every week. That shit made me laugh, cry, angry, happy, blew my feels away multiple times. I love it with all its flaws and qualities. Try it, yes it might be daunting at first but you just have to keep your eyes on the next chapter. The prize isn't based on how fast you got through the story, it's about how much enjoyment you got out of it. it's worth every minute you'll put into reading it.

I'm an Art teacher at a high school, and I often have debates with some of my students as to which is better: Manga or American Comics. They love Manga and I love classic old school Marvel. They've gotten me to move my needle a little towards Manga, and I've gotten them to move more towards Marvel...(A whole lot more..lol) As a matter of fact, part of their grade is to read selected Marvel comics that I've printed up, then answer the ten questions that I've generated at the end of each comic. They hate to admit it, but they love them..lol

    • @ComicTropes

MRCLSmoothful To me, that’s like asking, “What’s better: hard rock or alternative rock?” Because music is music and comics is comics. I wouldn’t defend Marvel or Dark Horse and so on as better than manga. For me it all comes down to specific runs by creators. So Batman: Year One is better than Yu-Gi-Oh. Pluto is better than Captain America vs. Asthma.

    • @MRCLSmoothful
      @MRCLSmoothful 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

That is true. It's about the different story arcs and creative plot lines. I just like to engage the students in debate to see how logical their arguments are. Most students fail at stating their hypothesis and supporting it using examples and facts.

The old adage of _there's no accounting for taste_ springs to mind. It is good to at least _try_ different things, which I've noticed a lot of young Japanese comic readers (or, more accurately, young people in general) don't, unless you make the effort to introduce them to it. One of the reasons I love this channel so much is how broad and diverse the subjects can be, ranging from superhero comics to indie comics to Japanese comics to French and Belgian comics.

To ruin their preference to Manga because of pointless debates are not very wise. Of course they are not able to construct a good and logical arguments yet because you are their teacher. you have more experiences.

s/o to Lao G who just said "G!" and puns that had to do with the letter G for his entire character arc.
I love the main characters but the side characters are the best part for me.

It's been a hell of a ride so far and I don't think it'll stop anytime soon. Though the anime no longer interests me I never miss a chapter of the manga. My life without One Piece is a bleak existence at this point. I'll be sticking with it till it ends. Whenever that may be. Every volume always ends up on my shelf. One Piece is not for kids. While I no longer read One Piece religiously I still like it (I watch the yearly movie) and my friends who are older or the same age as me who grew up watching/reading are still fans of the series. One Piece is a journey and it has really good world building but the most important part of why manga in general attracts new viewers is that it has "heart" and most of them retains your childhood innocence = escapism . cant say the same for western comic books.
