    Im in the US and responsible disposal of items such as batteries and bulbs isnt emphasize here. However, I always feel wrong about tossing them in the trash. Stores like Walmart and Best Buy have collection bins for these items and others and now I will make a conscious effort to dispose of them properly. I will also store my reusable bags in the car because I HATE plastic shopping bags.

      Everyone carries a reusable shopping bag or sisal woven basket when going shopping. Plastic bags are really bad for the environment.

    I have lots of scraps so I line a bowl with paper for your scraps. I wrap mine chip shop style then put in the compost bin. Line the plastic containers for bulbs & batteries with bags & keep in a drawer in the hall/kitchen ready to take out when you go shopping. Leave a folded bag or two at the bottom ready to replace the filled bag you take away.

    Nice. I like the newspaper idea a lot, I might cut them to size even lol. But the batteries! You didn't mention that you're not supposed to use a metal container (plastic or cardboard works well), and I think you are supposed to use tape on the ends, or at least the positive "+" side as well for added safety.

    compost: i noticed a bin for sale for $30, at a fancy store :) it was a metal bin and the lid had a sponge over a vent hole. This keeps the odours from being too strong and keeps flies from getting in! and keeps mold from getting out... and then air can go in and out. So, I would recommend that :) I think I'll make one actually.

    Love the newspaper idea! My kids (and husband!) are known for leaving apple cores or fruit scraps on the counter, for me to clean up later, so maybe I'll keep newspaper on the counter for them to use. Love this! I'm always forgetting to add paper to the compost too, so double whammy. :)

    Why she put newspaper inside the compost bin? It doesn't seem right with the ink on the paper. In Scotland we don't even have to buy bins for scraps as this is provided, and the disposable bin liners as well, they are not plastic bags, they decompose as well. In fact each household receives 2 food bins: small one to go under the sink and bigger one to put in the garden. They collect those once a week. I recycle many things: glass, bulbs, metal, plastic, batteries and even water filters. In Scotland we need to pay for plastic bags in shops so most people will come with their own shopping bags. We do keep them in the car, the big ones, and small ones in the house.

      Anna Maledon Children's Author Hi Anna! Newspaper is completely compostable...your garden worms eat it right up. It’s actually great for moisture balance.

    For some strange reason, my kids like to mix the good and bad batteries so I never know what's good or bad... our solution (which I highly dont recommend) is to jus hoard them.

    • @AnnaMaledonPictureBookAuthor
      @AnnaMaledonPictureBookAuthor 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have 2 small kids ( 4 & 7yo) so I created 3 small plastic boxes for batteries: 1 for recycling , another for new or charged batteries and 3rd for batteries that need charging. Each has a chalk label explaining what's what and also for kids I added green dot for good batteries, red dot for batteries that need charging and recycle sign for batteries that need to be recycled.

    • @vince7735
      @vince7735 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's fine to hoard them until you can get them recycled. Go to the dollar or hardware store and purchase a plastic container for your old batteries. Use painter's tape to label the container: bad batteries. Done!

    Yeah we keep grocery bags in the car. Some plastic bags are not allowed now so we have the sorts that she shows. Lately my husband has been getting strong brown paper bags too which I find are quite good. I would like to know what sort of things one can compost exactly. What do you do with dirty old meat that you may have forgotten about in the fridge or have left over, that no one wants (not even an animal). I personally barely eat meat except chicken. Where do you put the contents of a dirty cat dirt box also. I put them in the garbage in a bag but the oopsies are not too nice....and I feel a bit bad loading up the bin with cat litter itself.

    If there is any power left at all in those batteries they can start a fire kept in a bin together like that!

    • @letitiatsunami3749
      @letitiatsunami3749 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was told that a plastic or wooden box was fine for keeping old batteries. But a metal bin was a definite no-no.

      In similar mode, I thought: "So I'd have to remember to go into the car to pick up the bags when I walk to the shops! How is that any better than having them in the hall or in my bag?"
