Excellent video Barb. I've been following your ups and downs for all these years and I am so happy that you've come out the other side and returned to being you. Merry Christmas from New Hampshire!
In Croatia we used to have 3, and now 2 are used interchangeably. Sveti Nikola = Saint Nicholas Djed Božićnjak = Father Christmas Djed Mraz = Grandpa Frost, now retired but some people use that name instead of Djed Božićnjak.
*You should have higher numbers....your so authentic and genuinely a GREAT PERSON....your so creative and your facial expressions are so animated...I've been a Sub for yearss...have a great Xmas back home Barb...enjoy that bread!!*
Thanks for the upload. These tidbits are always interesting. Congrats on 50K, have a Merry Christmas. Question- What is the highest point in Slovenia, and have you been to it?
Barbara! 8:52 Christmas was NOT a holiday in Slovenia before 1989? WOW!!! Knowledge! Thanx for sharing! Merry Christmas & all the BEST for 2025. love(agape) Steve Holliday
It was not a holiday as it is now, people had to work on that day, now we have a day off. We had no church holidays before as the government in yugoslavia was cummunist.
Love how festive the place looks. I am a single guy who doesn't bother, but it nice to see. My only question has do do with what Barbara does in California.
Add one more. Recently my overly nosey waifu inquired shop assistants employed at our local Soviet/Russian/Ukrainian mom&pop&grandmodter&grampa etc store about which Christmas they observe. Their answer was quite nice: "We have Catholic Christmas, and there's дед Мороз, and then Orthodox Christmas at January 7th. Since we are totally mixed family, our kids are getting spoiled all that time." A certain Muslim immigrant, which happens to be the father of my grandson, criticized this practice even more: "Back there in India (the northwestern part), we have a ton on different religions, and consequently a ton of different religious holidays. Each and everyone is celebrated with eating unhealthy food. And, since one doesn't want to offend his neighbors of different religions, you attend their religious celebrations, eat their unhealthy food, and now we all have diabetes, hypertonia, and whatnot."
this multiple Santas stuff might be because Slovenia is in the middle of where so many Slav tribes that passed thru and finally settled that area way back and they just kept them all! (a Wild ass guess!). Congrats on the 50K Barb!
Saint Nicholas (Miklavž) comes from catholicism, Božiček is probably a Slavic, pagan thing transformed into a catholic one, and now swapped by a Coca Cola commercial, Grandpa Frost (Dedek Mraz) is Slavic, but it came to us through communism in times of Yugoslavia.
In original Slovene folclore Božiček was (is) a baby Jesus (Božiček = little god), or it could be a remnant from pagan times. So, we still have three guys, even without a Coca Cola commercial.
Hey Barb... how about a VLOG? Just saying, I think it might make for an interesting video. Especially if you put some effort into production. I think you could be really good at it. I am just making my Christmas wish, great video though.
Congrats girl! I love your videos, keep it up! Pozdrav iz Srbije! 😃 Oh, and by the way, these are all old Slavic (Staroslovenski) "pagan" traditions, the Christianity had to adjust to because they couldn't get rid of them amongst Slavic people. 😀 The more you know, right? 😆
Isn't fly agaric (amanita muscaria) the reason we even have santa (and the flying reindeers)? Apparently it was often consumed by shamans and reindeers and shit would get wild afterwards.
Your success is amazing, especially since you live in Lost Angeleez where there are no fields to plow. Please, please, please do a vid on Oberkrainer glasba, the cultural glue holding together Slovenians.
There are many very similar traditions in Slovenia and Austria. So I'm surprised that you have Santa Claus (or even 3!) in Slovenia and not the Christkind ("christ child") 😊
Original Božiček (little god) is Christkind, propably a pagan diety transformed into a catholic one. The new look comes form a american commercial for a Coca Cola.
Maybe because halve of Slovenia is in Austria.? They are slovenian name on tables before villages also near Slovakia😊 Slovenian people never speak about this as never such thing existed🤔Arnold Schwazeneger should be Slovenian origin.
Odlično! I'm just wondering if you could suggest a few valleys for rural and natural scenery, somewhere to spend a couple of weeks walking, hiking and relaxing. I'll understand if there are some you'll want to keep to yourself!
Many years ago my wife visited Ljubljana and always talks about the famous Dragon Bridge. Please, if it is not too much trouble could you show us that. I look forward to visiting soon.
Odin or Wotan; Veles; Kresnik; Perun; Troglav. A gnome (old man) that represents ancestors in a child (mini jesus), reincarnation you could say. Natures cycle from death to rebirth. Red colour represents blood, family blood or life force on tree of life (family tree). It is not good nor evil it just is, like nature is. But celebrated are good parts of a person, bad part is only mentioned for better future or survival. Present or gift mirrors his/her character. Dedek mraz ''winter spirit'' has pagan roots from Slavic tradition, then turned in more communist christmas symbol. You could say you yourself, children, family, survival, present/past/future and cycle of nature is celebrated on this holiday (from late dec to early jan). Jesus has nothing to do with it, rather if he symbolise a child in family. In other words you are god itself and also devil, but church doesn't want you to know that. Even Jesus said it, Psalm 82:6. So in Slovenia there is ''immigrant'' Christian, Communist, Capitalist ''coca cola'' and Pagan santa. All Hail the Horned One and happy yule!
My dear, you are becoming a beautiful young woman, you were always a pretty girl, now you’re becoming a sultry woman! Always enjoy your post, smart, pretty and amazing! 🙏✝️❤️🇺🇸
Romania too had the 3 characters, although not all at the same time: - Moș Nicolae = Saint Nicholas (5 December); - Moș Crăciun = Santa Claus (24 December); - Moș Gerilă = "Grandpa Frost" (31 December), a communist invention - now retired (hopefully, for good).
I never knew Saint Nicholas (Sint Nikolaas or the more common short form Sinterklaas) is also big in the east of Europe. It's a huge thing in the Netherlands where he has a formal arrival in every town mid November, and 'he' gives presents to the children on December 5th.
Gerila look like terorist😂 Love romania also i try learn some words.❤ We had also this Kracun in Slovakia, There were Valachs in Slovakia. National gun in slovakia was Valashka ,Juraj Janoshik had one. Also polish national hero.😊

Of course he was! Only they didn't celebrate it so outwardly, they didn't advertise it, it was a more intimate holiday, almost hidden.
It was not a holiday as it is now, people had to work on that day, now we have a day off. We had no church holidays before as the government in yugoslavia was cummunist.
Čestitke za 50 tisoč naročnikov!
Congrats Barbara!
my bloodline is from slovenia, i am learning more about the home country from you. hvala lepa💯
Merry Christmas!

Congrats to 50k 🥳 And Vesel Božič! 🎄☃
For the Q&A special: What are some hidden gems or lesser-known spots in Slovenia that are worth exploring?
No.1: Sv.Miklavž/ Sv.Nikolaj/ St.Nikolas ( 6th December, orthodox Christian is 19th December)
No2 and 3: the other two
Happy Holidays to you
Awesome video.

Q&A great! So what was the longest train ride you ever did inside Slovenia, in distance and in time spend on the train?
Woohoo! Congrats on 50k Barb, where can i get some Santa seeing mushrooms 🍄😅
I'll be wishing for a Barb and Rick Steves tour guide collab!

3 Santas does sound more fun and festive.but mushroom claus for the win,for sure! Thanks Barb, have a fantastic day young lady!
"Trije Dobri Možje" or in english "Three Good Men"... not 3 santas
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. All the best, good luck in the LORD year 2025! Brabara,.. Rudi.
All these years, I have been cheated. I want all of the back visits from the other two!
Grandfather Frost sounds like an 80s rapper
Also comes from Russia( Dyed Moroz)? 😂😂😂
And with the big fur coat and decked out walking stick he definetely fits the look of a wealthy 80's rapper.😅
Slovenia may have three Santas, but they have only one absolutely fascinating and witty Barbara Horvat!!!!!!!
🎇🎉CONGRATULATIONS 🎉🎇

Barbara, How deep are the lakes in Slovenia? Which is the deepest and what is supposed to be at the bottom?
Socks as a gift ... reminds me of a relative.
When did you move to California? I love Slovenia 🇸🇮 by the way. I visited in 2017.
Yeah, those mushrooms with the red cap with white spots on? They are fatal.
Isn't fly agaric (amanita muscaria) the reason we even have santa (and the flying reindeers)? Apparently it was often consumed by shamans and reindeers and shit would get wild afterwards.
@@miran248 Amanita is poisonous. It is not a psilocybin mushroom. You might die if you eat it.
Your success is amazing, especially since you live in Lost Angeleez where there are no fields to plow.

Great channel! Google about Thomast Nast, guy who painted Saint Nicolas, as Santa Claus in red colors, long time ago. :)
Sounds like the three wise men.
🥰
You had me at demon shaped pastries ..
I am Saint, Visheslav, Vojvoda to Slavs.
The ancient traditions are more realistic than Santa Claus. I’d keep them, personally.
🇸🇮🇸🇮🇸🇮📢Slovenia #1
What about Krampus?
Krampus is German/Austrian name, we call these devils parklji, they accompny Saint Nicholas (Miklavž) and scare notty children.

sultry? like WTF? you need the "How Not To Be Creepy Online For Dummys" book. Then you end the comment with those symbols? dear god make it stop.
